Driving to Furenzu was an interesting experience and downright dangerous. The reviews on CitySearch said nothing of bringing a weapon for protection as you drive down Adeline. The restaurant was so cute, and looked inviting. But there was NO way I'd get out of my car in that area.

Cozy and good service. However, the food is mixed. We ordered 4 dishes--spicy chicken wings, honey ribs, skirt steak, and catch of the day. We love the spicy chicken wings and the honey ribs. Skirt steak was overcooked (charred, to be precise) and bitter (perhaps too much cumin). The catch of the day was a piece of really thin sauteed seabass soaked in white balsamic vinegar. They fish was bony and a bit too greasy for my taste.

Overall, it was just an okay experience. If you are looking for really good Asian food and do not care much about the atmosphere, look elsewhere.

Pros: Ambience and Service

Cons: Food

Great date spot. Very cozy and warm interior. Has that hidden feel to it still. Also, impress your date with a flambe prepared tableside. The dishes were good for the most part. The only one that was off was the marinated tofu. It basically tasted like smoked cheese. Weird, I know. The other dishes were good and the service attentive.

Many similarities to dishes found in ordinary Chinese restuarants with an unimaginative twist. Diners acquianted with Asain food will be sorely dissappointed with the food.

Cons: not very imaginative

Last night, I was at Furenzu for the second night in a row. Can't seem to keep away! I wanted to try everything on the menu and everything was absolutely delicious! Geniusly crafted with a very unique combination of flavors. My favorites are the salt and pepper tofu, the duck confit with pureed cauliflower, pasta in a triumverate of flavored caviar: cognac, wasabi and truffles (mmmm!!!!) and the goat cheese pockets. The staff is very attentive and it adds to Furenzu's uber-cozy atmosphere. Yesterday, I had the salmon cakes with a glass each of the Patric Bottex Bugery Cerdon Rose, Prosecco and a Jeune Vignes... they were all fantastic, giving such a splendid summer surprise. Refreshing, light and very delicate in taste. I love the portions which allow you to try a little of everything, just like eating Frech. I highly recommend this destination restaurant. It's a hideaway to be discovered. Ask for the chef! She's the most gracious host.

Cons: You always seem to want more and more!!!

Furenzu has a nice, cozy atmostphere; the candles soften the Asian decor. The service was average -- we only saw the waiter three times: once to take our order, twice to deliver the food, and finally, to collect payment. The drinks were excellent -- we recommend the lychee martini as well as the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The tapas at Furenzu are creative but it's clear they're in need of finessing. The eggplant flatbread was *very* oily, infact all we could taste was the oil it was so drenched. The shrimp nest was good but cumbersome to eat -- the 'nest' was stabbing in all directions (ouch!). The duck tacos (also very oily) were also difficult to eat -- the taco breaks apart in pieces. Overrall, I think the restaurant has potential but at this point I don't think it deserves the 9.0 given by citysearch.

Cons: oily food, lackluster service

If you enjoy tantalizing your senses then this is the place. With an ambience that is both hip and warm you can easily impress a date or to catch up with a friend. Distinct but original flavor combinations along with texture, aromas and presentation place a focus on the dishes to be enjoyed not gobbled up before they have a chance to be tasted. It is apparent that the chef's intent is to create an experience for the customer and not just fill them to the brim. Besides before you know it you are pleasantly full and can walk out happy not heavy. Bon Appetite! for those who enjoy a full experience of eating for the joy it.

The value, food, service, and ambience are incredible. Very romantic with the candle light setting and the mood music in the background. My favorite is the yummy ribs. This a must place to eat. The owner is extremely personable. I would go eat at this restaurant over and over again. Overall rating is a 10!!

I'm not sure what the hell the other reviewers are talking about when they rated this resturant. One simple word describes this place- SUCKED! I'm no Iron Chef but the dishes offered at this place are a huge disappointment. Service was average, price was inflated, and the dishes was borderline amateurished. I can barely cook but I would rather eat my own cooking then pay for this stuff. Been there once and will never return. My girlfriend and I walked out of this place wondering how long it will remain open. Needless to say, we went to get Jack in the Crack after this experience.

If you want to pay a lot of money only to leave hungry this is the place for you. This is so unfortunate especially because the ambiance and the service was pretty good.

When we arrived I thought Furenzu is a great place for a date. Very cozy and fantastic use of space. Great use of candlelight, track lighting, and copper panels to allow for intimate lighting that doesn't leave the room too dark. The art and background music completed the ambience.

My wife, her mom, and I shared 6 dishes with mixed results.
The flank steak, crab eggroll, fried edamame, and shrimp in a nest were excellent.
The roasted quail was average. Juicy and well cooked, but the seasoning was lacking.
The oyster omelet we ddn't like becuse the oyster contrasted too much with the egg; the seasonings didn't bridge the flavor gap for us.
Accurate description of portion sizes.

The service was very friendly, but some of the staff seem tentative about being attentive.

The lychee saketini was excellent, as was the lavender tea.

Very romantic for 2 or comfortable with a group of friends or alone.

I was greated by a very friendly waitress and looking at the monthly changing menu , I knew I was in for a treat.

Here is what I had, everything was wonderful

Shrimp in a nest
Honey ribs with Thai Basil and curly mustard
Lavender marinated pork tenderloin-with lychee reduction
Spiced crab cake-with Thai Chili sauce
Ginger milk custard (a classic HK dish that finishes the meal off perfectly.
Pear tart w/ ginger crème fraiche

Small but wonderful wine list.

You will be proud to be one of the first people to find this gem when it will undoubtly be famous one day.

We had no problems being seated, but once seated the service was lacking. We wanted a leisure late night dinner and the restaurant wasn't crowded and yet we had to ask to have our order taken, drinks, & water. The food combinations were very interesting and delicious. Plates weren't cleared when other dishes arrived and food orders were missed with no apologies. They also ran out of half the dessert menu the night before. They have a few kinks to work out.

Furenzu is tucked away in Emeryville near some new lofts being constructed. Don't miss the Shrimp in a Nest, Lourdes Chips, duck flatbread, Honey ribs with thai basil and curly mustard if they are on the menu for that month. Everything I tried was big in flavor and thoughtfully prepared. The presentation of food plus the beautiful exotic decor of the restaurant completes the dining experience. A culinary hit, and I expect to hear more great things about this place as word gets out.

i ate here with my gf and some friends for a small intimate pre-christmas gathering. the first thing i noticed stepping in was how well decorated the place was. maybe it's because of the construction and urbanized area around the restaurant, but i felt like i'd stumbled into a warm, cozy retreat away from the city. definitely a good choice for a warm gathering of friends or for a nice date spot.

the service was great and the food was even better. i'm more of a meat person, so while i enjoyed the salad... i really enjoyed the ribs and the lamb. the shrimp nest was great too!

You don't expect a quality eatery in the middle of a construction zone. First of all, the portions are very small and you think that you won't possible have enough to eat, what a misconception. This is definitely my type of restaurant; I can try many different flavors and textures. It was an explosion of flavors in my mouth. With Shrimp in a Nest, the shrimp are succulent, crunchy outer coat, with a spicy oil that is not overpowering. The ribs are so tender you can cut them with a knife, but that is not necessary because they are bite size and the taste was to die for. I can't wait to see what the creative chef with come up with next month. The soft, the tangy, oh my. The Ahi coated in sesame seeds was WONDERFUL. I hope this jewel of an eatery stays in the area.

Being an Asian myself has not deterred myself from re-experiencing the new definition of Asian cuisine - as a matter of fact, this restaurant offers more than just Asian food. Pork tenderloin in lychee sauce was a heightened sensation between intense exotic lychee flavour and the aromatic juiciness of pork tenderloin. Shrimp in a nest was simply all about texture - the fresh crunchiess of the shrimp met with crispy noodles. The killer items on the list were Japanese wine served as classy/fruity cocktails. This was a cosy avant-garde style restaurant where one could engross in romantic conversation or wholesome party joyfulness, which of course served best by reserving the venue for medium-sized private parties. A section of the restaurant required extra lighting though since the menu could be read only with the help of those strategically-placed candles.

I almost didn't want to write a review, because I wanted to save this little place for myself! I took my wife here for our first official date as a married couple and I think it will always hold a special place in our favorite Eastbay restaurants. The food was incredible! Each dish was uniquely prepared and great to share for a couple (we ordered several dishes: shrimp in a nest, ahi, honey ribs, and the spiced crab cake). We fininshed our meal off with the Chocolate fondue....yummm! I think they change their menu each month, so I'm very much looking forward to trying our the rest of the menu and seeing what else pops up in the future.

My first time there, and I was completely bowled over. Beautiful and delicious food. Excellent service. Sort of romantic, but not aggressively so. Good wine and sake list. Shrimp in the Nest was terrific, as were the crab cakes. I thought it was a pretty good value at $ 60 (b.t.) for a lite dinner for two with wine and a dessert. I left feeling healthier, smarter, younger, and better looking than when I went in. A terrific place that I expect will not be undiscovered for long.

I've been to Furenzu several times since it opened, and every dish I've tried has been fabulous! The honey ribs are most excellent, and I'm happy to see that they remain on the changing menu. On my last visit I tried the sesame seared tuna with wasabi dib and it was delicious. I've also tried a few variations of the flatbreads--all good and original. The dishes are very flavorful and well presented. This is a great place to bring a date, especially when you want to sample several different dishes and don't want anything too heavy. The setting is small, warm and cozy, with candles, rust colors, and funky background music. Dishes are pricey but well worth it. Easy street parking too. Definitely give it a try.

I really love the variety and balance of tastes on the Furenzu menu. Ive been there several times and have enjoyed it each time. Each month the menu changes to offer new and creative dishes. The dishes are great for sharing. However, the portions are generally small so be ready to order several things. Its not the place to go if you are starving and want to stuff yourself. However, if you want an interesting culinary journey in a cozy restaurant with a very friendly staff, Furenzu is your place. Definitely a good place to take a date. I'd suggest starting your dinner with Shrimp in a Nest. It's one of their signature dishes.
