We moved to a Richmond in 1996 and found Steve and his staff at the Barking Lot. Our dogs loved the pampering they received on their spa day. They knew when we turned the corner onto to Belmont where we were headed. They were so excited

i took my kitty to the barking lot , after trying to find a groomer that would groom kittys a friend recomended them to me , i was totally pleased with the staffs attitude , and the way they handled my lil kitty , if youre looking for a caring staff that focus's on the work they love , this is the place to go . I'm fairly new to the area and took my dog there when I first arrived. The job they did was good. I went back 6 weeks later for a ""trim"" and flea shampoo, if needed. My dog is on a flea and heart program and has always been ""Flea Free"" \r\n When I picked him up, it was clear that no triming was done anywhere! They said he had a few fleas, so they gave him a flea bath. The next day he was itching like crazy...I gave him a bath myself and there were fleas!\r\n\r\nI don't think they gave him a flea bath and I know he was not trimmed ... a total waste of $45\r\nI'm not going back..

I was one of this shops first customers. Brought my little one here for many years; alwaysrequested the same ""natural"" haircut. One evening I picked her up and she had a beard like a schnauzer. WHAT?! The groomer said she must have gotten confused when she reviewed the card and apologized for not having time to fix it. So, I went home and trimmed it myself. Next time I dropped my little one off , I was talking to the owner and mentioned the beard and asked to be sure to do the natural. Out of seemingly nowhere, he shouted at me and told me that my dog was old and had a sore mouth and it was more important for her to be comfortable than for the haicut to please me. I stuttered and said that I was unaware that my dog had ever had a sore mouth. Then I left and cried my eyes out. When I picked my little one up she looked fine and we said goodbye for the last time. Never went back again, never heard anything. I groomed my baby for the rest of her life. And did a fine job :)

I used to bring my two lhasas to this shop until one day when I picked them up, one of the dogs had a burst blood vessel in her eye.\r\nThey told me not to be concerned but it looked terrible.\r\n\r\nMy niece used to work here, and she quit because she said that some of the employees, and the owner are sometimes too harsh in handling the dogs.\r\n\r\nI won't be coming back..I am hiring a mobile groomer..

I've been taking my dogs to The Barking Lot for 15 years. Had a wonderful Springer Spaniel who had awful skin allergies and, if not treated correctly, would get infections. When I asked my Vet if I should keep a grooming appointment when she had a particularly bad breakout, he at first said no and then asked where I took her to be groomed. I told him I took her to The Barking Lot and he told me to go ahead and keep the appointment; that he'd trust Steve to take care of her. Working around that dog's breakouts had to be like clipping around land mines, but she was always perfectly done. Steve would even ask me if I wanted to bring my own shampoo to see that she got the exact prescription and no new or irritating chemicals. Because the prescribed treatment caused some stinging, he would give her a soothing oatmeal bath to alleviate the discomfort after the treatment was completed. I truly think her care at The Barking Lot helped her avoid skin infections and kept her alive and healthy longer. She passed away a few years ago at the ripe old age of 17 1/2 and they still ask about her when I take my other two dogs in. \r\nI have a large border collie and a golden retriever. They are there right now and when I took them in this morning, they were so thrilled to get there, the golden was whapping her sides with her own tail, it was wagging so hard! When Steve had to pause to answer the phone, the border collie scooted over and leaned against Steve's leg, looking up and trying to get his attention. \r\nI drive all the way in from Midlothian, which in am traffic is an hour round trip, but there's no way I'll take my precious ""kids"" to any other groomers!\r\n

What has happened here?\r\n\r\nThe place looks the same from the outside, but I don't recognize any of the employees.\r\nI used to like this little shop, but I can tell you I won't be referring anyone here anymore....\r\n\r\nWhen I brought my lab mix here for a bath a few weeks ago, I arrived on time to pick him up, and he wasn't ready yet....\r\nI had to wait 30 minutes, before they brought him out.\r\nAfter I took him home, I noticed that his ears were still dirty, and his nails weren't clipped.....\r\nThis is the second time this has happened.....\r\n\r\nHe was dry, but he had obviously not been brushed, because clumps of hair were still stuck in his fur, and he smelled like urine....\r\nI thought about calling to complain, but decided not to.....\r\nI will just find another groomer who can do the job the way it's supposed to be done.

Pros: Clean shop

Cons: Low quality grooming

I've been coming to the Barking Lot for many years, but I have been forced to find another groomer because all of the most experienced groomers have left this salon.\r\n\r\nOne of them left more than a year ago, and the last good groomer that worked there left in April, because she got married and moved out of town.\r\n\r\nThe last time I was there, my dog, who is a 14 year old bichon, received a totally unsatisfactory haircut, and the owner of the shop was extremely rude to me when I tried to explain what the problem was.\r\n\r\nThe shop is still clean and organized, but the quality of the service has gone way down.

I have just read the review from UnleashedRD. Boy does this perso have the wrong place. I think she must be off. If my boy had such a bad experience as she describes, I'd never take him back the second time.\r\n\r\nI have been extremely please with the serviece and attitudes of the the workers here. I recommend this shop to every one who will listen. My boy has a bad back and they are extremely careful to be sure he is taken are of the right way. He always come home looking great. He enjoys his day at the spa!\r\n\r\nMy advice is this person seems to have an ax to grind. Their experience is not the same as I have had, nor is it the same expereince many of my friends who take their fur children to the Barking Lot tell me they have.\r\n\r\nThis shop is top notched in our eyes.\r\n\r\nTino's Dad

I travel 30+ miles to get to The Barking Lot. I pass many other pet grooming locations on the way but would never dream of stopping at any of them. They just don't come any better than The Barking Lot. My cherished Basset Hound, affectionately considered my ""son"", was given the royal treatment for 9 years. He grew to love the shop and Steve and his employees grew to love Skeeter. He was always expertly groomed, toe nails perfect, long Basset ears clean as a whistle. He was always ready when I arrived and was in a great mood - I think he knew how good he looked! Skeeter had arthritis and joint issues and the folks at the Barking Lot were not only gentle with him, but provided padded cushions and mats to keep him feeling his best. When my sweet Skeeter passed away, the entire staff shared their sympathies and memories with me; something you just don't find unless people truly care. \r\nI recommend The Barking Lot to anyone who wants the very best for their pet - they go way beyond just pet grooming - you become part of a family.\r\n

I have been going to the Barking Lot with my dog for about 8 years. I have had wonderful experiences with the employees. They give excellent service and are always helpful when it comes to the care of my dog. My dog has a bad back and they are always extra careful to ensure that he is treated well. I am not sure where the negative comments are coming from in some of the other reviews, but I really find it impossible that any of the comments are true. I highly recommmend the Barking Lot to all my friends with pets. You are the best in the Richmond metro area. Many thanks!

I've been using Steve and his wonderful groomers for over 15 years and find them friendly and caring. They always treat my Bouv with tender loving care and clip her to my specifications, rather than sticking to a 'standard' look. She consistently is well groomed and looks great when I pick her up! I appreciate their flexibility in keeping Uri and me happy. Although bathing and clipping are not her favorite things to do every three weeks, Uri gladly prances to the back and takes her spot, knowing that those tending to her care about her!

I have been affiliated with the Barking Lot in Richmond for many years. I would not trust my dogs or cats to cared for by any other grooming shop in Richmond. In business for over 20 years, Steve Boschen, the owner, is very knowledgeable about all dog breeds and has a wonderful practical approach to finding the best haircut for your pet that fits both the pet's personality, needs and lifestyle. Honest, fair and reasonable, the Barking Lot does what is best for your pet rather than what is best for their pocketbook.
