Located in the heart of Times Square and the Broadway Theater District, Haru Broadway offers an intimate dining experience. Beautiful, dim-lit surroundings and excellent service create a warm setting for Japanese Fusion food that is always fresh and imaginative. The Scene
The Times Square location of this Manhattan mini-chain looks rather mundane from the outside, but once inside reveals itself to be a large, bi-level room lit with a golden glow. In typical sushi restaurant style, natural blond wood is everywhere--although the bamboo poles are deployed a little too liberally. Service is good-humored and knowledgeable.

The Food
Though not for sushi aficionados, the food here is surprisingly good, and better than at some other Haru branches. Shrimp tempura is fluffy, crispy and light, and chopsticks slice easily through tender miso black cod. Sushi and sashimi portions are pert and reliably fresh, although you won't find any exotic delicacies here. If you're feeling hungry, try the juicy, lightly wok-seared tuna entree, which piles up the slices. Live orange clam is not to be missed--served up in a generous-sized shell, it has the fresh brininess of oysters.

Key Points

  • Fine Sake
  • Japanese Fusion Cuisine
  • Stylish design and decor

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - Green tea margaritas are deliciously slushy, almost like ice cream.

The sushi here is good and the scene is pretty hip. Nothing extraordinary so if you want good sushi and the scene is important then definitely check this place out.

Made fresh to order

by Melissa F. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,199

Everything at Haru is amazing and fresh. I've never had a bad meal there. They have normal prices. I would reccommend the steamed vegetable dumplings, and of course the SAKE.

Great sushi for the price

by anjelik32

I love Haru - it's great sushi for the price. My favorite is their Fire Roll, it has white and red tuna and jalapenos on it.. yum! I also like the Haru on the UES (the martini lounge).

Pros: Interesting rolls

Cons: It's in Times Square

Clean and fresh

by Jthlampert

When it comes to sushi you need to be sceptical and careful. This place is pristine clean and serves very fresh cuts. The crispy spicy salmon roll is the best I've had in quite a while. Try to catch it at happy hour 3:30 to 5:30 for the best value. Other times tend to squash the bankroll. But worth it. Fellas feel confident showing off here. The ambiance is quiet and classy and their sushi platters are sure to please.

Pros: Food Freshness Fun

Cons: Peak hour prices

Reliable sushi

by ruthmd723

We have been coming here for years before going to the theaters in the neighborhood. We have always been happy wth the quality of the sushi and service. Their menu is very basic but the food is incredibly fresh and reasonably price for the quality. It's not the most romantic restaurant but then again, what japanese restaurant is?

I highly recommend their spicy tuna and yellowtail sushi.

Pros: Fresh sushi and reliable

Cons: Can get too busy at times

Great Sushi, Fairly Priced

by midnitmarauder

I eat at Haru at least twice a month. It's my go-to place for Sushi. While places like "BlueFin" are too pricey to enjoy regularly and cheaper places have awful non sushi-grade fish, Haru has a perfect balance of authentic sushi and decent prices. My girlfriend and I usually get the Sushi for 2, which at $54 isn't a bad deal.

The Sush is great. The yellowtail and tuna melt in your mouth, very delicate. The few entres that I did try were great too. The seared tuna was cooked just right and the sea bass was very flavorful. I have honestly never had anything I didn't enjoy.

Service is great, we're always seated right away and our orders are brought out in a timely manner. Some of the staff has poor English, but that hardly bothers me as long they bring me the right order. Why criticize people for their accents?

Anyone who isn't a fan of this place is really just nit-picking at small details. I have never seen a single fly here by the way. Not sure what that review was all about!

Pros: Great Sushi, Good Service, Fair Prices

Cons: Too many tourists eat here since it's near the theaters, it gets crowded and noisy thanks to them.

FLIES!

by RPK67

What would you do if you saw flies landing on the prepared sushi at the sushi bar? My 9 yr old daughter saw this and pointed it out to our party of 4, we all looked in shocked surprise. The sushi chef noticed us looking at him, saw the flies and attempted to shoo them away...why not remake the sushi?...

We also watched the waitress shoo away the flies when she picked up the fly sushi to bring to a table....I thought thank goodness it isnt ours...WELL IT WAS!!...THE WAITRESS PICKED UP THE ORDER AND WALKED IT AROUND THE SUSHI BAR TO OUR TABLE! Like I wouldn't notice!! Pretty ballsy behavior... I RESPONDED that I wasn't going to eat this sushi and the manager and waitress both seemed not to be able to speak English and didn't understand why I refused the meal! I was able to speak with someone who spoke English but none of the employees were Japanese. We walked out never to return. What an insult to try to trick a customer to eat something disgusting to save money!

Pros: seating

Cons: dirty

Great Food at a great Price

by momof2bys

I just got back from a trip to NYC and had to leave a review for this restaraunt. This is my first time leaving a review, I felt this restaraunt was worth taking the time to do so.

The staff was friendly, the decor was warm and welcoming and the food was GREAT!

I had the California Roll and Chicken Teriyaki and my friend had the Shrimp Tempura Roll. I am not an expert on asian cuisine, but it was the best I have had so far.

I was certain the prices would be outrageous(we are in NYC), however, I paid the same price I would expect to pay in my home town of Maryland.

I will return on my next visit to NYC.

Avoid for important occasions

by KilloCT

You would think that a restaurant in the theatre district would have their pre-theatre dining experience down. Alas, that is not the case. I called the day of to confirm my end, so I figured they better have my reservation when I walk in. It wasn't. Ended up sitting at the Sushi Bar for a B'day dinner. Food was late and we left. The staff could have cared less!

Pros: Location

Cons: Everything else

Awesome Flavors

by riverside5

Great atmosphere, excellent service and the food is very flavorful. The Sea Bass is awesome and I am not a fan of fish. We make it a point to stop & eat there every time we are in New York. The location is great if you want to eat before the theatre. Well worth the money. You will not leave disappointed. I wish we had a resteraunt like Haru in Southern California.

Pros: Great food, ambience, close to theatre district

Cons: bathrooms are not visiably marked mens /womens

Deliciously fresh sushi rolls, awesome cocktails!

by spicycrunch1

The past few times I've eaten here have been very memorable and enjoyable experiences. Seating was prompt and service attentive/polite. The center of the restaurant floor has the best tables surrounded by the glowing candlelites, and pretty blond wood accents. Some tables in the corners and near kitchen are kind of on the dimmer side, something to consider if you like to see your food when eating.
For appetizers, would recommend the seafood spring rolls w/ green tea sauce...they came out hot and supercrispy. The sushi rolls are my favorite reason to stop by here. I ordered the crunchy spicy salmon roll. They give you plenty of salmon w/ lots of tempura flakes. It's good because it's not doused w/ mayo as many spicy rolls are. I also got the spicy tuna...and yellowtail/scallion roll- where the flavors melted w/ each bite. Cocktail menu is varied and creative. The Typhoon and lychee martini were mildly sweet, and comes in a cool flask so you can pour yourself seconds. Also tried my friends mojito..it was mixed well, and they offer lots of flavor variations. Iwould highly recommend Haru-Broadway if you're in the area, and have a sushi n drink craving.

Pros: sushi rolls, drinks, atmosphere

Great atmosphere

by yken

During our 5 day stay in NYC, this is the only review I am taking the time to write. Haru was such a spledid treat. It was intensely reasonable - especially the cocktails. Their regular prices are $8-$9 for delicious cocktails. Their waiting staff for dinner was prompt and very attentive. Truly a 5 star restaurant. We went twice during our stay. A great value.

Good times

by jreqmire

Hadn't realized that Haru was a NYC restaurant too (I'd only been to the one in Philly), but found this one in Times Square on a recent visit. The manager was the cutest thing ever and so sweet, and the fairy lights and bamboo branches (or whatever they were) were a great touch. Tried a bunch of appetizers (lobster mango ceviche + symphony were fantastic) and some sake. Different vibe than Philly but every bit as good. Highly recommended.

Pros: Service/manager, food, atmosphere

Cons: crowded

Recommended, but not for the sushi

by mbp117x

The basic sushi items and rolls are average. There's nothing wrong with them, but there's nothing special, either -- considering that, they're grossly overpriced. Most of the non-sushi items I've had are pretty good, though. That, plus the very nice ambience and the good bar make it a good place to stop by with friends or a date for a dinner or drink when you want Japanese food in a nice atmosphere. For these reasons, you'll want to pass on this place as a take-out option, though. Its best attributes are the ambience and location, which don't translate to the office or home even though the bill does.

Not Worth Money

by taki80

I've had better Japanese food at a mall food court. First walking in the place seemed to have great ambience. However, after being seated literally on top of the next table (couldn't even fit between the two tables, I'm small) and then having to scream to my husband because of the high noise level, it quickly lost its appeal. After seeing the high prices I thought the food would be great and the sushi was very good. But the meals were terrible. I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki and my husband got Garlic Shrimp. My chicken was completely dried out and on the cold side and the sauce was not very flavorful. The one positive thing I can say is that the service was prompt, we got seated right away and the server was very friendly. I wouldn't ever go back. Way too much money for such a terrible meal.

Pros: Good Service, Sushi

Cons: Poor Food, Noisy

Beautiful

by pandacub143

My friend and I were wandering through Times Square at night and we didn't want to eat at Olive Garden or another American food joint. So we tried Haru- and were very pleased. The sushi was fresh and smooth and the presentation was excellent. We loved how the placed looked and how quickly the chefs worked. We sat at the bar, and the chef who conversed with us made excellent recommendations and catered to us perfectly. (Spider roll was great, and fatty tuna is in season now!) However, the waitstaff is a bit strained and it took a while to get our check. The check came out to be more expensive than anticipated, but for dinner at Times Square I wouldn't complain (everythings expensive there, with usually pretty bad food too.) If you're in the square and need a sushi fix, this is a great place to start!

Pros: fresh, pretty

Cons: service

Below Par Sushi at Ridiculous Prices

by nyneighbor

No actual sushi connoisseur would find this place acceptable. In New York City, there are many amazing sushi spots, and this is not one of them. I made the mistake this evening of ordering delivery from this joint when my favorite place already closed for the evening. The result was a $50 tab for some of the most mediocre to poor sushi I have ever tasted. I could not get myself to finish any of the order. Even the guilt of spending that much on a meal could not help me finish the uninspired, dull food on my plate. STAY AWAY. Save your appetite for the many more deserving places, and leave this place to those who are just not in the know.

Pros: delivered food late

Cons: taste, cost

Great dining on Broadway

by sumptiousny

If you're looking for a place near Times Square to eat try Haru. Good Japanese restaurant with a nice ambience. I've been here on several occasions and usually order an appetizer shrimp & vegetable Tempura along with another main and roll or a sushi platter to share. You don't need to order too much before you're full on this tasty cuisine. Sweet cocktails complete the meal. I'll be back.

Unprofessional !

by jjs10

We love the food! But, It was the delivery time that we found hard to believe! It was last Saturday evening at around 4 pm. My wife ordered 2 appetizers and some bottle waters for deliverly. It took more than an hour and a half to got here. We could have cooked a meal by ourselves if we knew it took such a long time. Unbelievable!

Don't Eat Here

The rule is: If it's a restaraunt in Times Square, most likely it's not good! And Haru is one of them!
Really, the food is worst than Japanese take-out, but they charge you a high price for low quality food.

Noisy Sushi

by DCB728

Haru's sushi is really quite good. It is more expensive than some other sushi places in the theater district. Service is fine. The problem I have with Haru is that is a very noisy restaurant. Granted I was there at dinner time, but no restaurant should be that noisy-one has to fight to hear the people talking at your own table. Never a pleasant experience. Go to Haru on the off hours-you'll enjoy it more!

Pros: Good Sushi, Nice Room, Decent servie

Cons: NOISY at peak hrs.

Great Cocktails

by goondigity

This is a great place to go after work to meet friends and colleagues for drinks and sushi. The sushi is good here, but their menu is not very different from most sushi restaurants. The drinks, however, are really unique and they have a great variety of cocktails. The drinks are very pretty, generous in size, and mixed very well. The seating is comfortable too. You can sit down at a table to eat a meal, or just sit at the bar for drinks. Look for the cocktail menu!

Good food/bad service

by Dazed

Decent Japanese food but the service was terrible. The wait staff was inexperienced and slow witted. You have to ask for things several times and they still don't remember. I would stay away from Haru Broadway because my exp w/the new midtown location off Park was good, though pricey.

Cons: Expensive, Brain dead waiters

This restaurant is so great. If you love Sushi, this place is a great place to come. It's right in the heart of Times Square and after dinner there's tons of other stuff to do. The service was excellent and the food exquisite! I highly recommend Haru's!

Pros: Romantic, Classy, No Lines

Cons: One Bathroom Per Sex, One Sink Area

Great Fresh Sushi

by emetcalf

After trying Haru on the Upper East Side, we also tried their Broadway location. It's has a little more ambience, better decor, and more space than the one on the Upper East Side, but the same good food. Good presentation, very fresh sushi, good food. We had reservations for pre-theather, and would recommend it, but right at 6pm, it wasn't too busy. If you are looking for a more intimite setting, I recommend the Upper East Side. It's much smaller and lacks the crowds of mid-town.

Pros: Casual, Pre-theather, Fresh Sushi

Cons: midtown crowd

first time that ever happened

by barbmarks

Sushi was very nice and reasonably priced. We dined around 2pm on a Saturday, so there were only a few tables occupied. Waitress was unfriendly, slow and did not remember to bring items we requested. We paid the bill leaving a tip that was roughly $1 short of 15%. This was not even intentional. She actually came back to our table and presented us with a card stating we should tip at least 15%-20%. We found this pushy and rude considering the service we received.

Pros: good variety

Cons: wait staff rude

Fun and reliable

by Katjh80

I love Haru for the simple fact that it always serves up delicious sushi and fusion cuisine. Everytime I eat at Haru, the food is consistently great and the service too. I find this to be the same at all of the locations as well. The field green salad with ginger dressing is a personal favorite and the dressing is divine and the rock shrimp tempura with spicy sauce is great. The drinks are also fun and tasty.

Pros: Fresh, good service, clean

One of My favorites

by butterfly1426

We discovered this restaurant on a whim and it has become one of our favorite sushi restaurants. We have never tried any of the other locations but have been to this location several times. The service and food have been consistent throughout our visits. The sushi is delicious...melt in your mouth..... and the crab dumpling appetizer is very tasty.....in addition the wait staff and hostesses are very nice and cordial... The restaurant is very modern and trendy and the prices are reasonable....Come early or reserve....we have seen this restaurant become very busy in a few minutes......Very unfortunate that the only dessert available is ice cream.....get dessert somewhere else after dinner.

Pros: Great Sushi!, Nice Staff!, Pretty Restaurant

Cons: No Desserts!

Chain sushi with individual feel.

by Lindus

This restaurant is the youngest in the chain of Harus. However it has shaped up well from being a bit shaky when it opened. The seating is fast and service is in general adequate. One thing to complain about is that the sushi pieces are too big/long for an ordinary person and has to be chewed in half, but this is afterall a matter of taste. Otherwise the sushibar is long and accommodating and it can be fun to see the rest of the patrons from the slightly elevated position by the bar.

Pros: Lots of seats, Long sushi bar

Cons: Lots of tourists, Sushi chefs uneven, No Toro in evening
