I had the worst shopping experience at this store. Everything was dirty and overpriced. On top of the horrible items the customer service was extremely rude. I felt discriminated against because I am a black customer and all of the white customers were waited on before me, and finally after waiting for 20 minutes I was treated with disrespect.

I think whoever the women are that left bad reviews are nuts! I was at As They Grow last night with my 3 1/2 year old daughter and I have to say that the owner was fantastic as well as her daughter who was there with her. She was super friendly, the store was in great order with everything easy to find and there is even a play area designated with toys for the little ones to enjoy. She talked with me and my daughter and pretty much let my little one touch whatever she wanted. We purchased a few clothing items (of all were in GREAT shape with tags still on most) and a puzzle. I am going to frequent this shop AND possibly consign there since I had such a great experience. Keep up the great work - we'll be back!

I love As They Grow!! This shop is clearly at the top for quality and prices. I recently scored a Kate Spade chocolate brown diaper bag with the tags still on it!! Every time I go I am amazed at the stuff people in this area buy and then never use. As They Grow provides a great service to the sellers and the buyers. P.S. Love the owner!!!

I have always found great clothing for terrific prices. Each month, one or two tag colors are 50% off, so I primarily look at those color tags. If you want Calvin Klein, Hartstrings, or other expensive brands, you'll find them here! However, the owner can be a nasty piece of work. I had one average experience previously, and the last time was downright awful.

I had my selections and was waiting at the counter while she talked on the phone. I waited for maybe a minute while she didn't indicate "just one second" with her eyes or finger or anything. I finally said, politely, that if she needed to be on the phone, that I'd come back another time. She said "Oh no, it's not business; it's just my daughter". I pointed out that if I were on the phone with my mom, I'd conclude my call before I tried to buy her things and I expected the same treatment. She just shrugged and didn't seem to care about customer service. I left my (great things that I really wanted to buy) on the counter and left.

I was extra angry because I felt like I was trying to demonstrate that that is not how you treat customers with money in hand. However, I don't think she cared about the lost sale and I really wanted those items, so really, I lost out. However, I continue to go back. *sigh*

Also, don't let your kid do anything but read some books; they really like the no-touchy-the-merchandise game, which is hard because it's a pretty crowded store.

Great family business! Doreen and all her girls are business women. Three are in retail, one in sales. These ladies are go-getters!! And for anyone who knows this family, you know they are genuine, unpretentious, caring and generous! I will stick by them and continue to be a loyal customer and consignor as long as they are in business! Check out Yesterdays on the Main Line (Leslie's store) and Jennifer on the Avenue (Jennifer's store). Both in Berwyn. Lighten up nasty peeps! Thes guys are the real deal!

I too, have only had good experiences dealing with this consignment store!

In fact, I was in there this week to pick up my check for my first batch of consignments for the Fall/Winter. New consignor, first time ever. My stuff did great! It was smaller sizes (infant-12months) and I was warned ahead of time that if there is any size that was a tough-sell it was newborn. That actually makes sense to me now. At first I thought that would be the size everyone would want, but when you think about it that is the size that EVERYONE gives you for gifts. And it is also the size that is so much fun to buy when you are first preggers!

The owners were realistic about pricing and in the end most of it sold. Janie and Jack, Ralph and Hartstrings was mostly what I had, and it had only been through one baby and a lot still had the tags. Sooo.... I was not disappointed.

I am glad that I found this review page, and glad that others have left positive ratings. As a new Mom and someone new to consigning, the extra money I got and the ease with which I got it will help me for many years to come. In fact I am pregnant again and look forward to shopping!

Oh c'mon!!! Seriously, does E.E.Z. have too much time on her hands??? She has something to say about 40 something business's up and down the Main Line! Who does that?

But I digress, we are talking about As They Grow! This store has been around for nearly 20 years. I have been going here for about 8. I started as a consignor, poo-pooing the idea of ever actually buying anything second-hand, but I will get to that later. I am usually running from pre-school drop-off to paddle tennis to Starbucks. What works so well for me with As They Grow (and actually for all my friends) is that I don't need an appointment, they will take what they can sell and donate the rest, and I just pop back in a few months later and pick up my check! No fuss, no muss! There is no doubt about it, there is an element of trust that goes with consigning this way. But do you really think that 20 years in business, countless acts of kindness, and more goodwill in the community than is fairly represented here, is worth them being dishonest with someone's used clothing? Give it a rest. It's used clothing. They can't spin it into gold like Rumpelstilskin!

That said, once I started consigning I started to occasionally see something on the counter that looked interesting to me. Uggs, NorthFace, True Religion. Awesome stuff. Never let it be said that I am not continuously evolving!!! I did something I never thought I would do. I started buying the stuff!! Here is another great thing about this store: Most of my friends consign here. Most buy the same brands and their kids wear it for a minute and toss it on the floor just like mine do. We would never offer to buy each others kids "used" clothing from each other, but at this store we do it behind the cloak of anonimity and works out great for everyone!! I love it!

So the bottom line is this: If you have stuff that is higher end (not gymboree that has been through your kids and your sister's kids... you know who you are... ahem.. Joan K) but real good stuff that kids actually want to wear, then bring it here. The shop's owners will do everything they can for you to sell your stuff for the best price. Then you can take your money and spend in there, or somewhere else. You can even opt to donate the money to your own charity. Take your pick.

At any rate I have only ever consigned here, and frankly would only ever buy here.

I am reading these other reviews and all I can think is "sour grapes". First, I think they are written by the same person and second, any reprimand was probably due to the complainer's own misbehaving children!

I have five kids ages 2-19! I have been shopping at As They Grow since they opened in Paoli in 1991. There is no doubt the store gets filled quickly and is sometimes messy, but I have been in the store when mothers with unruly children whose kids can do no wrong have been climbing up the racks to reach toys that are purposely put out-of-reach, creating a dangerous situation for the child. The owner has firmly told the mom that the toys for sale are not for playing with and that her kid could possibly fall or knock over the rack if said kid continues to climb. If you can believe it, that "mom" got mad at the owner!!! What is she supposed to do? That is exactly the kind of person who would sue if her kid got hurt!!! Like I said, Sour Grapes!

Next, I am sure the owners of this store have bad days just like anybody, but they are very kind people. If they had seen a mom carrying a baby-filled car seat, they are absolutely the type to jump up and help with the door. To imply otherwise is just mean. I have had my hands full many times, and have also witnessed first hand, how they go out of their way to help you in or out of the store. They also donate to many causes and try to help locally as well. Very kind and very in touch with the neighborhood where they work.

As far as the merchandise goes, are you kidding?? Its the best the Main Line has to offer!! Stores that have closed have consigned all their left-over inventory! D&G, Diesel, Petit Bateau, IKKS, I mean seriously, all the best brands, all brand new! What more could you ask for.

To be fair, I will say that the store gets crazy busy in the Fall. New consignors, shoppers, people picking up their checks, people dropping off. It can seem overwhelming to someone new. But that is what makes it fun. I see more friends and moms from my kids school, moms from the gym, moms that I don't see any place else in As They Grow than anywhere else. Busy? Yes!! Its like going to a party!

So whatever happened to E.E.Z and Bryn M (same person I am sure!) it is clearly personal and they should be ashamed of trashing a store in this forum. This is one of the best consignment shops out there and if you miss it, well then, more for me!!

I love to shop consignment stores and I truthfully don't mind if a store isn't as organized or tidy as it could be. I don't mind the chase through a bunch of overpriced average second-hand clothes to get to that one special bargain.

But this place just isn't worth the pain. You can't take your kid there since the staff & owners -despite being in.the.kid.biz- will give you the hairy eyeball or even snippily correct your kid if they touch anything. Everything is dirty and disheveled, yet pricing is, shall we say, ambitious. Even if that weren't the case, I will not expose my kid to the racist hate radio that they play there.

I have been to nicer, cleaner and better-run garage sales. To say "unprofessional" is such a profound understatement as to be unnecessarily, and misleadingly charitable.

I always love to give business to local stores, esp in this economy. However, I have given this store 2 chances. First time, I struggled to get in the door with an infant car seat & they did not even attempt to help/say hello/acknowledge they had a customer --& the store was empty . The exact same thing happened the next time! Only on this visit, I was at the counter to make a purchase & the owner was on the phone complaining how she purchased an ad from some guy who did not return her calls & that business was slow during their busy season (now). In the meantime, she completely ignored me, even left the counter to go to the other side of the store--all why I am waiting to make a purchase! She even took another call related to her issue! In the meantime, my 6 mos old is getting fussy which made it more obvious that I was there & ready to go! Maybe they will realize that they have no customers not because of a missing ad, but rather how poorly they treat their guests!

I have been to this store many, many times and most of the items are well used
and the store was a mess. Recently, they rearranged the store (no new paint or
anything to brighten it up but at least it's a new arrangement) but the owner
is so harsh to deal with (sharp-tongued and inconsistent on store policy) that
I have stopped going there. You could find a good item or two on occasion so
stopping there isn't out of the question but consigning there is a nightmare (no discussion on price; doesn't care what you paid; 60/40 split for 60 days then you lose the item; and won't tell you what they can't sell beforehand for some odd reason).

This is a good one. They have good quality and usually fair prices. They don't take anything but nicer quality stores and designers and nothing with holes or stains. Unfortunately, they play Rush Limbau on the radio!
