A local treasure -- great place to watch a movie, see amazing plays, sometimes opera. They bring directors and actors and musicians in to talk about their movies -- I saw an event with David Byrne (of Talking Heads) and Roger Ebert once.

Quintessential home of the Arts in Brooklyn. Known as BAM for short. Showcases plays, musicians (classical, jazz, popular & international) international dance programs (lots of these from dance troupes around the globe Africa, Asia & Europe), opera (always a season or two of opera every year). They also have a Humanities program where classes are taught for dance, movement, book readings with authors, discussions, poetry readings, etc.

Housed withing the Academy, they also have a Cafe (BamCafe) (excellent frappaccinos and tasty delights to nibble on) where you can go for dinner or drinks prior or during shows or on the weekends for live music, also inside is a theater! BamRose theater shows lots of indie type first run movies (I call it Little Tribeca) and some popular movies as well as classic movies from all eras (1920s-1990s). They also feature themed mini movie fests.

Of great interest is their FREE (say it again) free Friday Matinees of film classsics, for Seniors 65 and older. Also included is free popcorn and soda. What a deal.

The prices at BAM for performances are very affordable and vary according to seating (just like any other center for the arts). If you're a member of BAM, you get significant discounts on all their entertainment (film, performances, programs) and they have pricing for seniors, students & children. BAM is easily accessible by bus, subway & car (yes they have parking sometimes free if you're seeing combo shows but otherwise $15). This is a wonderful place for people of all ages!

PROS: Beautiful Building & A+ Staff, Great Prices, & Variety of Entertainment
CONS: none
