First I'd like to say sorry for all the bad experiences people have had. I also agree with the reviewer who said they only get their dogs from puppy mills-all pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills!! I have had purebreed labs all my life and every single one came from a reputable breeder - people most of us have a computer, do yourselves a favor go to the AKC or just google local breeders in your area and you will find the most honorable, beautiful breeders of the dog you desire in your area!! This is the only way anyone should ever purchase a dog, unless they want to rescue one from a local shelter or thru a private rescue organization. I see many people have paid $1,000.00;s for pups, well that's what they cost - my new lab is $1,500.00 from a reputable breeder in CT, this includes shots, microchipping, deworming, and registration within AKC...please do yourselves all a favor do your homework and never, ever purchase any dog from a pet shop. When we stop purchasing from pet shops then and only then will puppy mills be shut down for good!!! Oh and a reputable breeder will take the time to answer all your questions/emails, whatever it is you want to know about themselves and their dogs - and they encourage your visits and helping you to acquire the knowledge of the breed you want to acquire

No reputable breeder is going to allow his or her puppies to be sold at a pet store. If the store isn't buying the puppies directly from a puppy mill, then they are buying from a broker who buys from puppy mills. C'mon people. If you were a breeder and proud of what you do, would you allow your puppies to be sold at puppy stores to whatever idiot has $1,000 and a whim? The store should be shut down.

WATCH OUT!!! My dog recieved the worse haircut ever!! I showed a picture of how my dogs hair cut should look and specifically asked her not to shave the dog or make him look like a poodle. The groomer shaved my dog completely down and cut the face like a poodle. Everything I asked her not to do! On top of all of this, when I arrived home, I noticed my dog had a deep cut on his belly that now need medicine 3 times a day. The nails were never cut and the ears were not even cleaned. I immediately brought him to another groomer to have his haircut fixed and the rest of his grooming completed.

On top of all of this, when we called, the owner "Elizabeth" she was not apologetic and did nothing for us. Elizabeth as well of the groomer, whom I beleive was Linda, were not friendly or accommodating in any way. My dog has never come back from a groomer shaking so much and scared. I would be scared to bring my dog there again and would never NEVER reccomend this esablishment to anyone for services or for the purchase of a dog. They are far from an honorable establishment. Seems they are in it for the money, not the love of animals.

I recently adopted a morkie-chin from John at Pick of the litter. Before I got her, I read the reviews, and felt alittle comprehensive about getting the dog that I was falling in love with. I spoke with John and asked him about the reviews, he admitted to reading them, and made me very comfortable about getting the dog. Well, I did. I am soooo happy that I did. The dog is 6 months old and a sweetheart. I immediately took her to the vet, and she was perfect. She only needed one vaccine, which was optional. She was paper trained, and gave me no grief about going on the paper. She is smart and friendly, and I couldn't love this dog any more than I do. She is great, and I couldn't be more thankful to John, for taking such good care to her. I have no regrets!!! OH, and I named her Lucy.

Give them a chance :) Everything seems to have improved at this place and I think they deserve a second shot to be a great place to get a puppy.

HORRIBLE! First I'd like to say that my puppy is beautiful, adorable and the sweetest dog. We so love him. However, I paid $1300 for a pure breed Havanese puppy. Every single groomer, vet, boarding facility, Havanese owner says that he is not a pure breed Havanese. We brought the dog home and I found out he had ear mitts and 3 types of worms. I just paid the vet and let it go. I never even bothered John with this.
I did contact him today, now that my puppy is going to be 1 and clearly his curly coat and long snout are not 'puppy issues'. I tried to calmly explain the problem and John yelled and screamed at me, told me I didn't love my dog, his pal (read puppy mill) in OK would never be deceptive. I tried to get a little more information, was screamed at and he kept hanging up the phone.
I contacted the ACA and they will do an investigation on John's pal.
I clearly doubt I will ever see any apology, financial comp, or anything else. Clearly, I'm not going to give my dog back, but it is very deceptive to pay a premium for a certain breed and not get it.

I see many, many people have the same problem with John who was so nice and caring when we were buying this dog. I was completely shocked at his RUDE, DISMISSIVE, ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS PLACE UNLESS YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH THIS TYPE OF SITUATION.

If anyone else who's experiencing troubles with this owner wants to contact me, please do. My e-mail address is krismcken@gmail.com

So sorry especially to the person who's dog died. That is so sad. I feel for you.

UPDATE: I have since found out that my puppy definitely came from a Puppy Mill in Oklahoma with at least 2 dozen violations. This mill was cited as being #4 of 10 worst Puppy Mills in the State. Currently, the owner Robert Lourance has more charges pending against him including letting a dog's eye get so infected, it aappears his eyeball fell out. Obviously, this was not what we were told. We were told that our dog was bred locally and did not come from a puppy mill.
Furthermore, John O'Donnell treated my puppy for his "cold", later told it was Kennel Cough, which can be deadly to puppies. John was screaming at me and could not recall which antibiotic he used and said he treats dogs with "colds" himself and does not need a Vet to see the dog. This is illegal. I'm concerned that my puppy may have been treated with an antibiotic too strong for his system and may have substained harm. John just yelled and screamed at me. I would recommend anyone having problems with this man, contact the Better Business Bureau. It is very easy to file a complaint.

I bought a puppy from John during Christmas. The dog couldn't go home due to a "kennel cough." I finally took him home the second week of January and 6 days later the dog was dying on my kitchen floor. I took him to the vet hospital and incurred almost $2,000 in vet bills to find out that the puppy had 75% kidney failure. John had been giving the puppy 250mg of Choroemphenicol (an antibiotic unfit for a puppy so young and without a vet scrip.) I couldn't afford to keep this puppy in the hospital so I returned him to John (although it broke my heart.) John swore he would return to health in a few months. The puppy wound up dying in a few weeks.

I am in an ongoing lawsuit with John for the medical expenses. He has pulled every string in the court system to avoid paying me. IF THERES ANYTHING I CAN DO TO PREVENT THIS HEARTACHE IN SOMEONE ELSES LIFE, I HOPE YOU READ THIS AND NEVER GIVE JOHN O'DONNELL AT PICK OF THE LITTER ANY BUSINESS.

I went into this place to look at the puppies during a street fair. I was told that the puppies did not come from a puppy mill. As I was looking around I noticed a maltese puppy. The woman handed him to me and immediately he snuggled up against me. I asked how old he was and they told me he was 5 months old. I fell in love with him and left a non-refundable deposit. I made arrangements to pick him up in a few days. The day I picked him up John kept me waiting for an hour. When he did show up he went through the vaccinations he recomended and told me to check his ears because he most likely won't get through life without at least one ear infection. As he went over the warranty he finally told me the "puppy" was a year old already so the warranty was void. He told me he was 5 months old! By that time I was holding the dog and what was I going to do? Give him back? They should have just been honest with me about his age. There is a big difference between 5 months and 1 year! Oh and he surely came from a puppy mill. He is an awesome dog with me but does not like other people because of his lack of socialization as a puppy. He also had an ear infection when I brought him to the vet. I will never get another dog from a pet shop! My mistake. I just got another dog except this time from a reputable breeder recomended by the akc.

Need Help! I'm trying to find Danielle a groomer who no longer works at Pick of the Litter, I am so upset she is no longer there, if anyone can help me in finding her please post. If I knew her last name I may be able to find her on Facebook.
Please if anyone knows where she works now or her last name please let me know. She is the only one I trust to groom by baby.

I am writing this review to reach out to as many puppy enthusiasts as possible. Do not purchase from Pick of the Litter. My experience in December 2009 has left me in a small claims battle with owner John O'Donnell for over a year. I purchased a puppy as a christmas present for my family. What I DIDNT know was that weeks prior to me taking the puppy home, John was giving the puppy 250mg of Chloramphenicol, a very harsh antibiotic not recommended for puppies. This antibiotic was unmarked and unprescribed by a vet. A week later I tool the puppy to the hospital where I incurred $1300 in vet bills to find that the puppy had 75% kidney failure, the puppy was also deemed unfit for sale. John has ignored all requests to help me with the vet bills. I won the small claims case and he's taking me back for a trial de nuovo. As a customer how much to do you want to put me and my family through? Please do not make the mistake I made.

I bought my dog here and he is epileptic. A good breeder would be able to breed out the disorder, but not here. Plus I took my dog there for grooming and the groomer cut the dog so badly I had to see the vet. When the owner refused to pay my vet bills, I took him to court and he totally and completely LIED! He told the judge that I brought my dog in completely matted and covered in feces. A complete and utter lie. A dispicable character! Please buy your dog from a breeder, not a puppy farm.

I did write a very nice happy review about my new pup because my family and I fell in love with her so quickly.... and nothing has changed. She is a great Puppy. But I want to now add to my comment. I took my new pup to the vet and found out she has ear mites. Not only eggs but adult ear mites that the vet said she has had for quite some time. I called John from Pick of the Litter to see what he could do for me since I bought her from him 3 days earlier and he told me there is nothing he can do for me. This was very upsetting for me to hear since I just spent $700 on the new 6month old baby and she got the ear mites from his store. He sold her to me 3 days ago...and there was nothing he could do. So between getting the medication taking all the bedding to the laundry mat and now having to treat my golden retriever for mites because I dont want to take any chances of my other dog getting them I have run into $150 of unexpected expenses because they sold me a pup with MITES. This means that the other pups there more than likely have mites too. If John would have compensated me even a portion of this money back to me I would shop at his store again regardless but now I can't trust him. He should treat his pups for mites and make sure that he does not sell pups with Mites in the first place. I do love my new baby and I am still very happy to have her and would not change that fact...she is great and that I am thankfull for. But John IF YOU SELL A DOG WITH MITES YOU SHOULD BE WILLING TO PAY FOR HER MEDICATION ATLEAST>>>>>Being from the area I usually go in and look at the pups at Pick of the Litter, try not to fall in love and leave. That was not the case this last time....I went in and fell in love with a Peek-a-Pom. The woman who works there was extremely helpful. She let me hold the pups and touch as many as I wanted. I wanted to play abit with this little girl that caught my eye and there was NO problem. She let me sit with her and hold her and watch the pup in action. Well I bought her....Hunnny Bear is now Brandy Bear and in two day already know her name which shows me she is as smart is she is pretty. I just love her. My husband loves her and my Golden Retriever, who is a little jealous, loves her too. They play so cute together like she has been part of our family for years. Instant connection:)

I have never owned a dog before in my life, but felt like trying out something new. I went to a local animal shelter, but all the dogs there were bigger than me, and honestly scared me cause they were so aggressive. The same day i walked into pick of the litter, not sure if i was going to purchase a dog, but the second i held the 4 month old toy poodle i knew she was exactly what id always been looking for. The employees were very helpful and let me hold her for a while. Once i decided to buy her they informed me everything i needed to know about owning a puppy. Although she was a bit pricey, she is totally worth it! I have never met a more loving cuddly well behaved puppy( that barely barks =) ) Pick of The Litter is a very reliable place to purchase your new cute puppy!!!!

Pick Of The Litter was recomended to us as we had been trying to find the perfect pet for our three children. We did not want to purchase a pet from a pet store due to cruelty and health/breeding issues. We but when we responded to an ad for the breed we were looking for, it turned out to be John from Pick of the Litter. Since he was recommended anyway we went to meet his three boys because he said that he was the breeder and that they they were his boys from his dogs that he bred. We purchased a male 6 month old Havanese from John and our children received him on Christmas morning. We were set on not buying a dog from a pet store but would now recomend Pick of the Litter, they were great! Most important our dog is adorable, loving and playful. Our kids named our boy "Oliver". He is training well and is healthy and so happy. My husband and I had been looking for a very long time to adopt a pet and had no luck, just disapointment after disapointment. Then we tried breeders but most were so far away that I can't imagine the poor puppy on that plane. Oliver had his well check up today and he is healthy. He may need to have surgery when he is neutered to prevent any future problems or illnes, due to his testicles have not dropped. We are hoping he will not have to go through this, but if so, John assured us that he will cover this expense. The dogs at pick of the litter are all clean, happy and not one looked sick. The staff was very friendly and helpful! We will update again later to let you know how our puppy is doing! Kirsten R.

I was considering buying a second dog when I spotted a real cutie in the window. I live in town and pass often. When I entered to see the dog the employee a young man was the rudest I have ever met! He essentially implied that I should leave after looking at the pup for oh about 2 seconds. Apparently unless you whip out the 1400+ dollars the dog costs on the spot you have no right to be there. I will NEVER NEVER spend a dime there. I was humiliated and insulted at how he treated me. How inconsiderate and rude. What a shame for a small town business. Smithtown residents should be ashamed of this businesses nasty behavior. That is no way to run a business in a community or anywhere else. Buying a dog should be a careful decision. Good luck there, if you want a second look they would probably shoo you out the door. DON'T BOTHER STEPPING IN THE FRONT DOOR!

I went to Pick of the Litter to look for a puppy. I was interested in a particular breed, but they did not have it. I looked around and found some cute puppies, I fell in love with one of them and wanted to hold it before I purchased it, but I was told that I am not allowed to hold the dog. The place, may look clean, but it smells horrific. The person working there was rude, the prices are ridiculous, and some of those, if not all of those dogs are from puppy mills. No reputable breeder who cares for their dogs would sell their animal to a pet store! They pay probably $100-$300 per dog yet sell them for $1600-2000. The only "good" things about the place, was the fact that the dogs did not look sick compared to other puppy stores. Overall, I was going into that store to purchase a dog, but with that attitude i received, they just lost the $1800 I was spending on a dig they paid about $200 for.

I took my puppy there to get groomed for the 1 st time and when I picked up my puppy, I was stunned to see what I saw!! I broke down in tears!! My puppy was butchered!! He had cuts all over his face and he was so freightened!! He was practically shaved and had uneven cuts to his grooming. All I asked for was a PUPPY CUT!! My puppy ignored me for a few days that I just said to myself never again! Talk about CRUELTY TO ANIMALS!!! The groomer obviously had NO experience and I'm lucky I got my puppy back ALIVE! BEWARE OF THIS PLACE!!

I bought my puppy from John who guarenteed the heath of the puppy. After a few months the puppy needed surgery due to genetic eye problems. John told me to have my vet do the surgery and he'd reimburse me the cost of the surgery. After many, MANY attempts, I was unsuccessful in collecting the promised money. He always told me that the "check was in the mail". Shame on you, John! I will tell everyone I know NEVER to trust you or buy a puppy from you.

If you care at all about dogs, don't buy your dog from a STORE! Dogs are not products and NO respectable breeder would sell their dogs in a store. So if you want to buy a dog, go to a known breeder. But your best bet is to ADOPT. There are plenty of dogs in shelters, purebred ones too, go to www.petfinder.com

Bought a goldendoodle at Pick of The Litter about a year ago. She has been nothing but happy and healthy! She is a spunky 17month old girl now who loves to eat socks! The people there are helpful, caring, and genuine. Have referred quite a few people there since and all have been happy as well!! Would get a pup from there again!!

I worked at Pick of the Litter for about nine months. I know there are a lot of mixed reviews about this place. Just like any other business, there days and bad days, really nice customers, and those who think of the store as petting zoo/babysitting service. All i can say is that everybody there works very hard, especially to keep the clientele from viewing the store as 'dirty' or 'inhumane'. I also don't think people should be so appalled that puppies go to the bathroom...yeah, it smells, get over it, that's why we clean it up. And by asking someone not to touch the puppies, we aren't trying to be rude or spoil your fun;it's best not to let 40 or so dogs all get a taste of each other's spit, especially since they don't have such strong immune systems at this point in their lives.
The money issue is not really my problem, but the owner does pay everything that's owed, even if it does take a really long time sometimes.
I plan to continue working there, if my help is needed, after returning from studying abroad.
The employees have become like a second family to me, and we have shared both good and bad times together. If you think the shop is kept in poor condition, you should visit other, far scarier and less hygienic stores that LI has to offer. And if you want to see what a puppy mill actually looks like, all you have to do is look it up on google...I plan on buying a dog or puppy from this store when i get that oppurtunity later in my life.

I purchased my dog from Pick of the Litter. He is the best dog I have ever owned. The owner assured me that has been buying from the same breeder in Pennsylvania for 20 years or something. My cock-a-poo is epileptic, it turns out. This is not uncommon in cocker spaniels, but I had read that good REPUTABLE breeder could and would be able to eliminate this genetic disorder from the bloodline, esp. if you're breeding a cocker with a poodle! You'd figure after 20 years, a good breeder would have success with this. So, although I did get a fantasic puppy, I was probably lied to about the breeder. I told the owner about the epilepsy and he seemed stunned. He had never heard of that from this breeder!! Come on....20 years and I get the only dog with this genetic disorder.

If you support animal cruelty buy you pets from Pick of the litter. They have been in trouble many times for cruelty to animals. Some had swollen limbs and missing skin this is not how animals should be treated! Read about some of the dogs that have come from Pick of the little. At this site below.
http://www.caps-web.org/petland.php
This puppy mill needs to be shut down so no more animals can go through that kind of life At Pick of the litter.

I brought my 2 year old Dog to this place to have hew groomed. I also brought an allergy shampoo that my vet told me she needs to be washed with once a week. My Wife and I would wash her ourselves but we live in an apt and the arrangements here make it almost impossible. When I picked my dog up we knew they hadn't even washed her, but rather combed her and sprayed a perfume on her. She was shedding like mad and had more dander than usual. We also knew they never washed her because when we washed her in the past with this same shampoo her skin was not oily and cleared up in a few days. She is much worse now and we had to bring her back to the vet as her skin is worse than before. The Vet even felt that we didn't use the shampoo. Never take your dog to this place or buy a dog. It is nothing but a puppy mill. I felt so bad for my dog when we got her home. Do not make the same mistake! Hopefully they lose there license and the puppies get taken from there and find nice homes!

I am a breeder that John has purchased puppies from for 4/5 years. At first I received payment for the puppies before I sent them to him. Then he started paying after the puppies were sent and that is when he got behind in paying for the babies. I was trusting and listened to the promises he made, "he would pay as soon as he could!". John O'Donnell owes me thousands of dollars and has been promising to send me 'some' money for over 2 years now. Every time I call to ask him if he can send me money, he promises he will after the weekend - that must be a productive time for him! So every weekend for the last 1 1/2 years I hope that he will follow thru on his promises and I get nothing. So I call again and get the same promise. He told me once "You people (meaning people where I am from) really take things to heart don't you". I don't know if I will ever get my money but I do know if he lies to me he will lie to others. He seems like a nice man and acts like he is sincere, but he is not. I know for a fact that I am not the only one that he owes money to. Don't buy from this guy! He's a crook. I am going to post this anonymously hoping he will still send me some kind of payment!

I have purchased two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels from pick of the litter. They are great healthy puppies. Even though the price is a bit expensive the owner takes care of the dogs as is they were people. This is a very very very clean pet shop because the owner doesn't allow you to go from cage to cage spreading germs and before you touch the dogs its mandatory you wash your hands. If you really wanted a good healthy puppy the price is irrelevant if you really wanted a dog.

I have purchased 2 dogs from Pick of the Litter. After the first one (pug - bought at 12 weeks) I felt the puppy needed a playmate. After searching and shopping at numerous stores I found that Pick of the Litter was the cleanest, healthiest, and most helpful puppy store on the island. The staff was helpful and qualified to answer all of the questions I had. At this store, unlike the others, you can tell these puppies are cared for at all times. There are no sick, suffering puppies. Any one of them will come up to you ready to play. I must say I am quite happy with my decisions to invest and to voice my opinion about this business. If you are searching for a puppy check out Pick of the Litter.

My family and I bought a 10 week old puppy from Pick of the Litter. The advertisement said that all health would be guaranteed. Within a few months the puppy had some medical problems. According to our puppy warranty the store was responsible for all vet bills. I called the owner and he authorized me to get the needed surgery and he would reimburse me. Once the surgery was done and I gave him the bill (over $400.00) he told me that "the check was in the mail". After many attempts to collect this money and after many promises to pay us, the owner never made the payment!!! He is not to be trusted and is a very bad businessman. Do not trust him and do yourself a favor: fall in love with a healthy puppy from a reputable breeder. This guy is only out for the money and will cheat you out of a lot of money!!

This is the only place I can bring my dog (a yorkie) for grooming. Other places we tried before couldnt handle him. He's not a difficult dog, just like most doesnt like his nails clipped. They always do a great job here, never have problems with him, and are really loving when I drop him off and pick him up. He never seems scared of them either. While waiting for him, we always take a look at the puppies for sale and have never had any problems. Great place!

While waiting for him, we always take a look at the puppies for sale and have never had any problems. Great place!

Pros: Friendly, loving

.

I live in town and as myself an animal lover. Yet everytime i go here it seems if im not looking to buy a puppy that very second then they kinda have a mean look thrown at me that makes me uncomfortable...
