As a previous employee of The Hungry Pup, now Follow Your Nose, I can contest that all of the above reviews regarding the owners' treatment of their employees are 100% correct. One is unable to please these people. Every single mistake was treated as a life or death situation (and let's face it, at a doggy & kitty boutique, it's not) and each day at work turned out to be more and more nerve-racking. I think the main issue that Ramie and Dave faced was that they wanted to do everything themselves, and hated the fact that they had to rely on their employees to get stuff done too. For example, it is very hard to enter information into a computer correctly when someone is breathing down your neck and hovering their hand over yours on the mouse the entire time, waiting for you to screw up.

I often felt like I was being talked down to and have witnessed several times the owner talking about a customer and his/her pet IN FRONT OF other customers and was able to see the discomfort on the latter's face. I have also been scolded in front of customers, which is very uncomfortable considering that what was entered into the computer or what a previous customer called about IS NOT appropriate to talk about in front of other people! There was another instance where the owner partook in bashing another dog walking service in Evanston in front of myself and another coworker. I thought gossiping was supposed to end in high school! Very unprofessional.

I did not appreciate being spoken to like I was a 6-year-old. I especially did not appreciate not being able to speak without Ramie or Dave interrupting me, correcting me, and blaming me for messing something up, without giving me enough time to explain the situation OR that I wasn't even working the day the mistake happened (which occurred more than once). These people play the "blame game" with their employees, which just creates mistrust amongst coworkers (no one wants to be the one with a finger in their face) and an overall dissatisfaction with the job. Did I mention I only worked there for 4 weeks?

Prospective customers, the owners are very knowledgeable and give the best advice they can (without being actual vets). Don't get too personal unless you are OK with being gossiped about behind your back.

Potential employees, STEER CLEAR. Enough said.

This place is amazing!! The people there saved my dog by recommending a food that was right for him. He had horrendous allergies to everything and we spent thousands of dollars on Vet bills trying to make him more comfortable. The Vets ID Prescription food was a nightmare and it was way too expensive. Besides it was junk food anyway there was nothing etible in it other than corn. (which i might add is terrible for pets) www.dogfoodanalysis.com told me all about the not up to par foods i purchased in the past. i was doing something bad for my pet and i had no idea. Thank you so much<3

anyway, my pup is doing fine, thanks to them.

I will never return to this store! I have periodically shopped there over the past 5 years, and each experience gets worse and worse. I had one helpful experience with one of the owners when seeking food for my dog who was having some digestive issues. But the food they insisted would be the solution... wasn't. So much for their "expertise". I also found a great coat for him there, but now that I have to replace it, they never seem to have the one I want in stock. I have been told several times the are expecting an order "this week", but when I check still none in the size or color I need. I finally asked for them to call me when the coat came in. No call. So the adequate-to-good customer service that I once received has just gotten worse and worse. Just about 2 months ago, I was questioned by the clerk about where I shop for food. When I told her that I go to a chain that is very convenient to my work, she spewed insults about the store and the people who work there for several minutes, making me feel VERY UNCOMFORTABLE and just wanting to leave so it would stop! I had another terrible experience returning and items, with the same above clerk seemingly trying to make me feel stupid for not knowing their return policy, and asking questions. And when I went (for the last time) to use the credit, it was gone. For several minutes, no one could find the credit I was assured would be there forever. But the woman helping me finally looked that the balance on my account and found it. Maybe someone should train the help... Needless to say, I am done. Others tell me they really like this store, but not me!

not sure how this place stays in business. the lady owner seems to have 'tunnel' vision as far as customer service is concerned - she, not the customer is always right and she seems unable to consider other's point of view or even listen. I used to frequent this place in the past, even though the prices are a bit higher than other stores in the evanston area because it's close by. but have stopped because of one too many bad experiences, including an unauthorized charge to my credit card. they have a great opportunity to carve out a niche market and build a profitable business, but their potential is greatly limited by poor customer service and unethical business practices.

I've been frequenting this business since January - purchasing items from their store and using their monthly dog walking service. However, I've discontinued because of poor customer service and bad business practice:

1) my credit card was billed more than the invoiced amount for the last two months for dog walking services. I inquired with the wife/owner twice via email and she never addressed it, so I spoke with the husband/owner and he said he would look into it and get back to me and has not.

2) I special ordered a harness from the Hungry Pup in March. I was told that it would be in in a few days. However, the one that I ordered never came in; in June they dropped off another harness with another pattern that I did not order and charged my credit card without my permission. The wife/owner refuses to issue a credit to my card. I went into the store yesterday (aug 8) - I showed her the exact pattern that I ordered and she indicated that pattern was no longer available. They should have told me this and given me the choice as to whether or not I wanted to purchase one with another pattern. She refuses to credit my card for an item I did not order.

3) I purchased another harness earlier in the year. The snap broke and I took it in to exchange for another one. My friend purchased the same type of harness and the snap on hers broke as well. She took the harness back to the store and indicated that her friend (me) purchased the same type and the snap broke on that one as well. The wife/owmer responded to my friend, "her dogs chewed it". This was not true.

4) The treatment of their stafff and custmers is questionable. There seems to be an anger issue that is inappropriately directed towards customers.

I've seen a few other posts regarding issues with insurance claims, and found the below article on the web:

Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission issues first work stop order against Evanston employer

On Wednesday, the Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission announced its first work stop order in the closing of a business in Illinois for failure to comply with Illinois' mandatory Workers' Compensation Insurance requirements.

All Good Dogs Pet Care was forced to stop all work by the IWCC and the City of Evenston. They operate a store front in Evanston at 941 Chicago Ave. They employ dog walkers in six suburbs.

The authority of the IWCC to issue a work-stop order was strengthened by the state legislature in 2005. The IWCC has the authority to issue a work stop order against a state employer if the employer knowingly fails to carry workers' compensation insurance.

Two employees of All Good Dogs Pet Care are eligible to receive benefits under the workers' compensation act, however, the owners have not paid benefits.

According to Jan Eisbart, the manager of the commission's insurance compliance division, All Good Dogs Pet Care was given every opportunity to puchase insurance and to comply with the state's insurance requirements.

"All they had to do was get insurance and they have not complied, " Eisbart said. "They did not respond to our letters or even apepar at the hearing. They forced our hand."

Uninsured employers can be fined up to $500 for each day that they do not have insurance the maximum fine is $10,000. The Commission noted that corporate officers could be held personally liable or could be sent to prison or both."

Pros: good potential for a niche business

Cons: poor service that affects the potential for a good business

I came to Hungry Pup because the shop where I usually buy my favorite dog food was temporarily out of stock. Upon entering the store my first impression was what a hidden gem it was. The young gentlemen at the register welcomed me and was extremely nice and helpful.
Then Cruella DeVil appeared from the back of the store. OK so not exactly Cruella but she was obviously the owner and had the angriest look on her face. I was literally in the middle of a sentence to the sales associate when she interrupted and started barking orders for the day at him. She was going out and he needed to do this and that, etc.
In 15 years of retail shopping and even a stint working retail in college I have never experienced such behavior. She couldn't allow him to take care of my needs before speaking with him? She couldn't do so in private?
Usually in a locally owned shop you get the utmost in professionalism and customer service as I have experienced in many of the local Evanston shops. Not this one. I spend quite a bit of money on my three dogs, however my money will be spent elsewhere.

I understand what other reviewers are writing about. New to Evanston, I've been there twice. On both occasions, there's been a woman who reprimands the two worker men, in front of customers, on the sales floor. The first time, I chalked it up to a bad day. The second time was particularly disturbing due to her level of anger, and that there were 4 other customers present. The gentleman employee that was being verbally assaulted was assisting a couple, and the woman continued to yell at him about some other customer order for the entire 10 minutes I was in there. My two year old was visibly upset about it. I live nearby, but I will not tolerate shop owners who berate employees on the sales floor in front of customers (makes you wonder how they treat the animals they care for). I know first hand how tough it is to get good help, but there is a time and a place for coaching. Going forward, I'll drive to Ruff Haus or Sam & Willy's, where I know I won't witness a show...here, you just don't know what you are going to walk into.

From the time entered the store the lady was yelling at the man in the background then she looked like she wanted to bite me next. I purchased a dry bull stick treat from the bind and my poor dog got sick from eating it. The customer service and products suck. Also they are highly overpriced. Not recommended at all

This is a wonderful little shop that carries lots of great things for your pet. Not only do the owners know their stock--especially their large variety of foods--they are exceptionally kind. From last-minute deliveries to being patient with my special needs, The Hungry Pup has given me great service. The homemade treats are delicious! Thanks for everything you guys! Evanston is fortunate to have an independently-owned shop such as this, especially at a time when we're surrounded by the chain stores. Bow Wow!

This is such a fantastic little shop that keeps us coming back again and again! The prices of some stuff is a bit high but you'll notice that it's quality matches the price. Our dog loves the free-range chews and even comes in to pick out biscuits from the bakery case (get the Barker's dozen for the best value!). The staff/owners are great and I find the other review about poor customer service to be completely untrue. Perhaps he/she tried to return something without the tags on it or wasn't aware of the store credit return policy (read your receipt folks).

All in all Hungry Pup is a great store with some very unique items you won't see in other places!

Our experiences have been wonderful - even in the face of a power outage while we shopped!

Great selection of high quality products - and amazingly at lower cost than competitors - if the competitor even has the same product in stock.

We have shopped at this superb local business since its move to Chicago Ave and recommend it highly.

Business Response:

We're always sorry if someone is not happy We're sorry when anyone walks away unhappy, but we explain our return policy and have signs posted as well as print the policy on our receipts. We don't yell at our customers, but sometimes we don't say what they want to hear. We stand behind the quality of everything we sell, but in this instance, it wasn't a quality issue. The items were obviously used & soiled, the tags were torn off & the customer didn't have her receipt. We offered a replacement, but the customer wanted a refund for an item that was used & not needed anymore. We feel that we were fair in our actions & sorry if this customer doesn't agree.
