I enjoy Goucher College, though I am a Goucher II student, a non-traditional student living off campus with my own family. I have attended 2 other colleges, a private college the same size in NM, and a small community college in NY state. Goucher is a small liberal-arts college with many varying majors. I am studying Psychology, one of the most popular majors for the college. The faculty are extremely nice, and knowledgable about their perspective coursres, and most are very open to student's needs or concerns. This college has a fairly small campus, but with nice buidings and extensive grounds around the college. It is very close to downtown Towson, the mall and shops and restaurants. There are shuttles that leave the college daily to other Baltimore colleges and Universities throughout the city. Goucher is in a consortium, meaning if you want, you may take credits at other local colleges and universities in the area, while being a full-time Goucher student, and financial aid covers it. The staff people in every office of the college are very helpful, and often know you by name. Goucher requires students do a study abroad option and offer a stipend for expenses. Though the college is very expensive, they have many scholarships and grants avaiable to students with need. They offer work study programs as well. The library/computer space is open 24 hours/day during school sessions. The school is very unique in that many of it's students do independent studies or majors. There are many courses that overlap in an integrated learning type environment. The contacts avaiable for internships are also very impressive, reaching all the way into the White House. Whatever you think of, Goucher can almost certainly help you make your dream happen. One thing I am not used to is the high female population...it feels like around 75% or more. The college was originally a female college, though is slowly becoming more coed. There is also a large Jewish population. The college offers a kosher dining hall. Environmental and sustainability are also important at the college, offering recycling, comminty gardens, and the Anthaneum, which is a environmentally sound building. It is a great college for those who want a small feel, but with big asperations, and that long for a challenge and new experiences.

Goucher College is by far one of the most unique liberal arts colleges around. To start, it has a small student population (less than 1500), and therefore is able to keep a wonderful student /teacher ratio for classes. Instead of being lost in a crowd of faces, professors know all of their students, and they can often be found talking with students around campus and even working with them on off campus projects. The campus is arranged such that it takes no more than about five minutes to walk from any one building on campus to another. However, there are many more acres of land surrounding the buildings that include sports fields, horseback riding trails, paths, wooded areas, and common areas. In warmer weather, you can usually find several classes sitting outside for their lessons. There is always something to do on campus, whether it is with your favorite club, or hearing a well known speaker talke about their latest research. Goucher College is known for their Peace Studies program, and even those not involved in Peach Studies are often working together to bring peace to the world in different ways. While Goucher has required an off campus experience for all students for quite some time, they have just implemented a new policy that will insure every student has experiences outside of our country. Each student is now required to study abroad, whether it is for a full year or for one of the schools many two week winter intensive courses abroad. Goucher is even providing travel stipends to make sure every student has the means to pay for the travel, in addition to special scholarships offered for international study. I sure miss my days at Goucher College!
