Barclay Prime has never disappointed me! I come back every time I'm in Philly. Everything was great; The Tajima Flat Iron steak was delicious and a great compromise in price if you want the buttery taste and smooth texture of Kobe without the Kobe Filet Price tag. Service was equally amazing, Michelle and her staff are world class...really, I travel the globe and this place is tops. It's worth every penny!

If I had to pay for this myself, I wouldn't go. I had a gift certificate, so I gave it a try. The Kobe sliders were good, otherwise I would say it's a typical steak-house, priced very high.

I've been to a lot of places to eat in Philly, and a number of its steakhouses. Barclay is the best, period. Capital comes close, but does not equal it. The 24 oz porterhouse is the best deal on the menu. The Wague/Kobe is good, but in my opinion not worth the added price. Ask if they have any Kobe actually imported from Japan (that's not on the menu), that IS worth the price. Everything else, 5 stars across the board. My only beef (pun intended) with the place is that I can't afford to go there every week! I've been at least a half dozen times and every visit has been top notch.

For the price of Barclay Prime I wouldn't recommend it at all. I've been there a few times because my fiance absolutely loves the Kobe beef $85 steak. I have gotten a filet well done on two occasions and just found myself eating an overpriced burnt piece of meat. Another time I had the chicken which I thought was an overpriced slimy piece of chicken. I would rather go to the Chart House and have Prime Rib!

Barclay Prime is a fabulous restaurant, especially if someone else is paying because it is very very expensive. Everything is ala carte. I love the wedge salad, with blue cheese and lump crab meat. The decor is cute- like a mod library. You can't go wrong here, even if you don't like meat.

Barclay Prime is one of my favorite restaurants in Philadelphia. The sliders for an appetizer are really good. Salmon is incredible and so is their filet. Often booked up in advance. Try to make reservations. One odd thing that may freak you out the first time. The bathroom is huge but it is unisex. You do a double-take when you first enter thinking you walked in the wrong one.

oy vay - my father said don't bother, but I had to try it, especially since we had reservations at Table 31 rthe next week. Dad was right. (I just had a great time at Table 31 by the way.) So, I thought I shoud write this. First, I must say, the service was great. I was with a tried & true wine connoisseur & she said the wine list was boring & the usual (same as capital). I thought the cabernet was good. The the appetizers were boring and unfortunately tasteless - I wished they were good, I was paying good money for them. Then the steaks, boring too. And the steak knives....you couldn't cut your throat if you wanted to they were so dull. We split the porterhouse & it iasted like it must've been frozen, watery kind of. We left without getting dessert. We decided to walk it off & go out for some great gelato...somewhere else.

This is my anniversary dinner place, and I look forward to it every year. Yes, you will spend a lot of money here, but it is worth it.
The place is decorated beautifully, and there's not a bad seat in the whole dining room. I have always gone early on Saturday evenings before the dinner rush, but always make reservations anyway. It has none of the retro-kitsch-tongue in cheek-ness of the other Steven Starr's I have been to- it's just very, very good., and classy. Pricing on the steaks alone is reasonable compared to other steakhouses in the city, and the sides are standard (whipped potatoes, asparagus, spinach), but always delicious.
My boyfriend loves the shrimp cocktail- I have never seen shrimp so big! and the presentation of it is spectacular. I have tried the lobster cocktail- which was small, but flavorful. will switch to the crab cocktail next time.
The wine list is extensive, and we like that there is no snobby sommelier trying to upsell the bottles. If you want to enjoy a $20 bottle of wine with your $80 kobe steak- it's no problem-- this place will cater to you no matter what your tastes are. We have ordered a few reds in the $35-50 range and they are wonderful- wish I could remember what they were...
Since it's really a 'special-occasion' place for me, I always dress up, but there seems to be no dress code- a plus for some, I'm sure. There's always at least one guy in there that looks like he just finished mowing his lawn.

Ate here last night with my girlfriend. The atmosphere was different from other traditional steak houses (capital grille, Morton's etc) We found the atmosphere inviting and the seating very comfortable and not as loud (music) as some of the other reviews suggest. We were 15 minutes early and were given the option by the hostess to be seated in the dining room or to relax in the lounge with a cocktail. Our waitress was attentive and prompt. Excellent wine by the glass selection (they even have a super tuscan and a bordeaux by the glass). We had the bacon wrapped scallops that rested on fried green tomatoes. This simple sounding starter was cooked to perfection with all ingredients exhibiting their optimal flavour and texture. We both had steak for our entrees. She had the Kobe filet and I had the Kobe strip. While my steak was excellent, her filet was simply one of the most succulent pieces of beef I have ever had. We had truffle whipped potatoes and asparagus as our sides. I highly recommend the potatoes as they have a generous pool of truffle oil with lots of truffle bits atop (if you like truffles, i need not say more). We were quite full but had a relaxed dessert over coffee. We had the deep dish cookie (comprised of chocolate chunk, sugar and oatmeal raisin) with home made vanilla ice cream on top. This was accompanied with a rich chocolate sauce. While we were craving a spoon or two of something sweet, we were unable to exhibit restraint. We took a bit of time, but our waitress was acomodating and did not bring the cheque unit I asked for it after a couple refills of coffee. The cheque was steep but fitting for a dining experience that delivered on multiple levels. The only minor gripe I have with this restaurant is that the dining room is very open (I personally would not chose this as a venue for a romantic celebration) Other than that, I highly recommend this restaurant.

I've been here twice now and wasn't impressed. The decor isn't anything special, the service isn't great, and the food is o.k. yet they charge such high prices. It wasn't the worst experience ever, but i definitely won't go back.

Barclay Prime can best be described as overrated. I have had a much better meal at a 1/4 of the price. Service was terrible. I have never been to a restaurant where the hostess felt it was a good idea to come to your table and flirt with your date. She came up to our table interrupting our meal, completely ignored me, even had her back facing me the whole time and flirted with my date. I was waiting for her to give him her phone number. It was pretty embarrassing and strange experience.

My husband took me for dinner on saturday night for my birthday. The service was terrible our appetizers arrived before our cocktails did. Our food was good although everything was room temperature nothing was hot. I suspect our dinner sat waiting for our server.

The restaurant is very loud and we used our candle to read the menu.

I would not recommend this restaurant.

Last weekend, my wife and I journeyed to Rittenhouse square to dine at Barclay Prime. I consider myself to be a kobe connoisseur and self proclaimed "foodie". We were very excited to dine at this particular restuarant because of a bone in kobe steak (which is unheard of in the U.S). The cut of meat was was a 36 ounce Tajima porterhouse offered at $245. Me and my wife split some wonderfull appetizers and salads. Then we embarked upon this porterhouse as well a butter poached lobster. The porterhouse was so tender and buttery, we were in steak heaven. To top it all off the service was stellar, our server was the best I've ever encountered , so knowledgeable and funny. I've dined at steakhouses all over the country (wolfgangs place, craft steaks, peter lugers, charlie trotters joint) and none of them were comparible to the all around service and food at Barclay Prime. Great job folks!

seems there's only one group in filthadelphia who know how to run a restaurant. i've eaten at striped bass, alma de cuba and now barclay prime in the last couple of months. they were all fair.

i found it funny that i called less than an hour before i wanted to get a table of a friday night and got in without a problem. we surely weren't in manhattan. the receptionist asked me if we'd be celebrating anything this evening. i said yes, we were celebrating my girlfriend's leaving the city alive after living there for a year. she said, 'oh, celebrating your leaving the city at the best restaurant in the country'. puh-lease.

was given a table shoved over in a corner even though the room was half empty. waited a bit too long for any service, but the waiter was efficient enough. ordered 1/2 dozed oysters, 3 from the west coast and 3 from the east. they were fair. we split a 16 oz. austrailian kobe filet that was a special on the menu for $145. it was good and well prepared although too salty. the whipped potatoes were also too salty. the aparagus was forgettable. the desserts were ok. i had a vanilla cheesecake with a strawberry compote and my girlfriend had a banana cream thing that she enjoyed. bill was $283 with tip.

if you like kobe beef then it's a good choice for a decent meal.

This place is for rich folks who prefer to squander money on an 'experience' rather than getting a meal worthy of its pricetag. If it weren't, they wouldn't offer a $100 cheesesteak (gimme a break). The dining room is lovely, with a modern library feel to it that's actually a really neat vibe. Everything is done all fancy (and pretentious to the n'th degree). Everything is overpriced. You can end up paying $85 for a steak alone, not counting what you'll pay for sides, salad, appetizers, wine. Once you've ordered your steak, the waiter will come around with a plate of different kinds of knives and ask you to select which one you'd like for your steak. This is laying on the BS REALLY thick, now. I told the waiter I'd be satisfied with any one that cuts meat. The steak itself was decent, but I always prefer a juicy steak to the dry aged cuts they brag about. I found this to be an extravagant experience for an average meal at an outrageously inflated price. You're paying to be able to select your knife and feel important, if you're into that sort of thing.

My wife and I made this our 2nd stop on an ongoing steakhouse tour. We both loved it. She had the filet and I had the 20 oz ribeye. Both were absolutely delicious. The truffled potatoes were as advertised in many other reviews I have read. Excellent. We had the crab cake as an appetizer, the only thing I would say about it is that there is tons of crab, but it could have been maybe a little more moist. The banana cream desert was awesome as well. The service was great, we loved the decor. The only thing is maybe the seating against the walls can put you a little close to another party.
I've seen the bar described as cozy. Not sure if that is the word I would use, but the drinks were good.
It is expensive, but if you have any history with these type of steakhouses, you should expect that going in.
One cool thing is that they allow you to pick your knife from a selection before your steak arrives. I took the German model carved from a single piece of carbide steel.

We will definitely be back.

Shocked to actually see a negative review on here. With all of the amazing restaurants in Philly (and there are numerous), Barclay Prime stands out as one of the best. Not stuffy like your run of the mill Capital Grilles, RC's or any other overpriced steakhouse....great retro design and comfortable plush couches...

I recently had a friend bring me back her leftover kobe steak, freeze it for me, then I heated it up a week later, and it was still one of the best steaks I've ever head.

A must eat at place in Philly.

By the way, the 100 cheesesteak actually comes with a nice bottle of champagne if i'm not mistaken.

"Just because everyone else believes something is true, doesn't mean it is."

I made the unfortunately decision to take a friend of mine to dinner at this Stephen Starr location. Being a resident of San Francisco, I consider my City the birth place of all of Stephen's restaurant ideas. Trust me when I say this man is not original but merely the Marco Polo of delivering hip cuisine & restaurant design to Philadelphia. There is nothing original about this restaurant except for the fact that it is unique in its hideousness. For those of you willing to pay the outrageous prices for inferior cuts of meat, I implore to save your money and donate your money to your favorite political party. It enrages me that my fellow Philadelphia friends and family pay homage to this tourist trap of a restaurant. (Would you respect a restaurant that advertises a cheese steak for $100.00?) This is something you would see advertised at a restaurant in Las Vegas. Make no mistake, this is restaurant is an insult to those chef's that devote their careers to preparing fine cuts of meat. I made a fool of myself taking a friends here and I hope you do not make the same mistake. Avoid being duped by the positive reviews, trust this critique and visit another "steak house."

Sincerely,

A friend

This was the best dining experience I've had in Philly. Simply amazing food, professional service, wonderful. Say what you will about Steven Starr, but he has outdone himself this time. If you appreciate fine cuts of steak, do not pass this up. Make sure to bring your credit card though- it will cost you.

If you appreciate fine cuts of steak, do not pass this up. Make sure to bring your credit card though- it will cost you.

Pros: High Quality Food, Professional Service

Cons: Expensive

My wife and I dined at Barclay Prime last weekend. I still can't believe a steakhouse could be this good!!! From the moment we walked through the front door, we knew we were in for one of the best dining experiences we would ever have. Every detail was just right (service, food, atmosphere, etc.). Look out Capital and Morton's. This one beats you on all counts.

My husband and I took my parents to Barclay Prime when we were in Philly visiting from NYC. We immediately loved the restaurant. We had a drink in the very sexy lounge before dinner. We had dinner in the dining room on one of those tables with the couches. The seating was so comfortable and the room was breathtaking, very different from the typical steakhouse. The server was friendly and impecable, didn't miss a beat. The steaks were the best we've had (better than any NY steakhouse). We ordered an array of different items to share and each one was better than the next. Overall, we ate and felt like kings and queens. We can't wait to go back !!!

My life partner and I were so impressed that we went back the next night. I had the shrimp cocktail and he had the chopped salad. The shrimp are enormous. The chopped salad was so refreshing. If you like aged beef you must have the NY strip steak. A piece of heaven, but don't forget to order the 20 ounce ribeye (it melts in your mouth). You have to order the sundae and sorbets. If you are into wine like we are, you must spend some time and go over the 20 page list of juice.

Barclay Prime served up the best filet I have had in a lifetime of steak loving. And the truffle mashed potatoes were spectacular! Our server was attentive without being pushy and answered every question on que. He was a doll -- even if the people refilling water glasses were a bit reachy (ie stretched over the table rather than asking for the glass or sneaking around us). The wine list covered all the bases with good selections ranging in price from about $40 up to well past my mortgage payment. Overall an impressive dinner with a great vibe. Definitely a great location for either a romantic splurge or a power lunch.

We had heard about Barclay opening last year, but the hype over the '$100 Cheesesteak' blinded us to what Barclay Prime really is - a GREAT Restaurant. No, we didn't order the fabled kobe cheesteak, but one was served at the table next to ours - and it looked and smelled fabulous. What they don't tell you is that it comes with a half bottle of Veuve champagne - so, I guess the $100 is something of a bargain.
From the moment we stepped into the Barclay, we were amazed by the understated opulence of the surroundings, and the friendliness of the staff and managers. The guests were obviously enjoying themselves too.
I'm coming back for lunch next week. The menu seems to be a trimmed down version with even better pricing.
Go ahead, treat yourself!

I have dined at Barclay four times and have been satisfied with my meal and service everytime. From the Stephen Starr atmosphere of coed bathrooms and couch like seating, this restaurant is a must. I order the featured ribeye steak as well as the to die for lobster bisque soup. Besides the food, I thoroughly enjoy picking out my knife of choice to cut into my steak. Highly recommended!

Went with my husband to celebrate our anniversary last weekend. As soon as the head waiter found out that we don't drink alcohol we kind of got the brush off. Never heard any of the specials. We heard him telling another table after we had eaten. The onion rolls served were a little over heated. The bottoms of the rolls were hard (as if they were heated in a microwave.) The food ordered was good. Steak was better than the lamb chops. We thought it was just a little too pricey at $190 without alcohol. This was my second time at Barclay. First time was much better. Don't know when or if I would go back.

A boutique steakhouse? Well......the beef is about as good as you good south of Sparks in NYC. Ambience is like a modern liberary with your grandmother's chandeliers above your head. Service is OK, but do not let it stop ya. There is a sheekness of criticizing this place, but Barclay Prime is a refreshing view of what my idea of a steakhouse is.

Cons: Service (sometimes)

The atmosphere is elegant and warm in both the bar area and dining room. The Staff is very accommodating. The food, although good, does not live up to the expense. A shared Ahi tuna appetizer with ponzu sauce was enjoyable, as were the sides accompanying our entrees (truffled potatoes and creamed spinach). The Signature rib eye steak (at $42) was merely good when compared to a far superior Porterhouse served at another Phila. steak house. With 2 drinks and a bottle of wine, the bill, with tip, came to $240. We will come back to try their lunch special but most likely not for dinner.

I took my husband here for his birthday and was pleasantly surprised by Barlay Prime. I was so fed up with gimmicky Steven Starr restaurants that I had my doubts, but this one is an exception. The steak was excellent and the wine list ample. The service was courteous, and the staff well trained. It is a bit of a scene, but if you don't pay attention to the stilletoed NY wannabees, it can be a pleasant experience.

Everything on the menu was divine. The truffle whipped mashed potatoes are amazing. Both desserts we ordered were excellent as was the steak. I was very impressed by the service. Even for Starr, service was exceptional. It was a bit expensive, but worth it for a real opulent evening.

Call it the anti-steakhouse steakhouse. Barclay Prime is nothing like the usual clubby, manly-man steakhouses that dominate the scene. Sleek, modern, white-on-white, this beef emporium appeals to carnivores with sophisticated, slightly…
