Message from The Upper Crust

Each and every one of our ingredients is the most important piece of our delicious puzzle. That means from our freshly rolled dough to each one of our savory toppings and cheeses, only the best ingredients are used to create an authentic, thin crust Neapolitan-style pizza that is sure to make your mouth water with anticipation.

Editorial by Citysearch

With its limited seating area--there's a 10-seat communal table and a few wall-mounted shelves--the Beacon Hill Upper Crust location lends itself to carry-out or free delivery service. Creative diners mix and match from an endless variety of gourmet toppings (arugula, baby clams, Canadian bacon), and the menu suggests several tantalizing combinations. The flavorful "white spinach" (spinach, garlic, mozzarella and feta with no tomato sauce) and the carnivore-friendly "state house" (hamburger, pepperoni and spicy Italian sausage) varieties both prove popular. Gooey calzones and fresh Greek and Caesar salads round out the offerings.

The Upper Crust is good

by sue t. | insider Insider | Rank: 19,114

The buffalo chicken is great (for a thin crust pizza). I normally don't like super-thin crust pizza, but I love the fun flavors at upper crust. The pizza isn't really filling though, so I always end up eating a lot.

It's decent

by Bo D.

For Boston, Upper Crust pizza is better than average. There can also be inconsistency from location to location. But - I tried their calzones last week and was pleasantly surprised! I'd give this place more starts if it was more affordable. Two fat calzones cost $28.

Pizza very average, service poor

by Mark B.

Read the reviews on this page, and new to the neighborhood, trotted off to The Upper Crust with a watering mouth. Then waited almost an hour for my pizza.

So much for freshly made.... they forgot I was there and said they'd shouted my name repeatedly, but it was my fault as I kept ignoring them.

OK, mistakes happen, but I was stood right next to the guy doing the calling the whole time, They could have made amends with a friendly apology - instead, I was left with soggy pizza and a bad impression.

They have gotten our order WRONG three times!

by alib000

We have ordered from Upper Crust a handful of times. Three times, out of say, six, they have gotten our order wrong. Tonight was one of those times! I called them and the employee who picked up said "Sorry- we mess up a lot these days." He offered to credit my account- for the third time. Needless to say, we will not be returning. It was a SIMPLE order, and it shocks me that the business doesn't care enough to listen to their customers!

Pros: None

Cons: They are rude and incompetent

Slices of Heaven

by Dioriste

UC is the place for a great slice -- their daily selections are creative and YUM! The crust is crispy, the specialty toppings are tasty (!) and their rustic tomato sauce is to die for.

Grab a slice and head across Beacon Street for a lunch in the Public Garden for a quick lunchtime escape!

Pros: Excellent pizza!!!

Cons: Staff can be a little rude, but hey, we all have bad days...

Hold off on Tremont St. Location

by pepperoni

Usually go to the Charles Street location and very happy. Tremont Street location just opened- may want to give some time before visiting. Service is beyond bad. Waited over 25 minutes for a slice of plain, then looked at me as if I was the crazy one for complaining. Go to the UCP website and notice there's no way to contact them, probaly for a reason

by nedownsouth

i was in town for the weeknd with my wife, and we were craving some real, genuine pizza.. tghe concierge at our hotel recommended the upper crust, and were we glad he did! this pizza is what pizza is supposed to be - the dough was fresh, the veggies were crisp, and the sauce was good enough to eat with a spoon.. i guess there are a few other locations (we were told by some other local customers), but i can't image any have the same funky atmosphere.

Good work, guys! Open down south...

Pros: the ingredients and final product

Cons: can't think of any.

Best Pizza in Town... My fav!

by Curlykookla

I remember the first time I tried The Upper Crust..... I was on a Saturday afternoon stroll down Charles Street, watching the dogs, going in and out of boutiques, and then found myself standing outside a lil' pizza shop, watching boys toss some dough.... I couldn't resist, but to try some pie that I've been hearing about all over the city....

The service was friendly.... the man at the counter was funny, and helped me pick my toppings.... I sat at the window, ate a salad to start and then ate some of the pizza ever! Now I go to The Upper Crust every weekend!!!

YUMMY!!!

Pros: Great, friendly service.... and they make the pizza to order

Fantastic, Fantastic, and well....Fantastic

by melda9

Up from the Cape and we stopped at Upper Crust and I have to say that I thought the pizza was fantastic. A little bit of a line but not a long wait at all. All the people there let me know that this must be a pretty popular place to eat and must have pretty good food. I was surprised by some of the other reviews I read, I thought that I got great service there and the staff was very friendly and would highly reccomend anyone to check it out. My Review. Fantastic, fantastic, and well....Fantastic. A five out five stars.

Pros: Excellent pizza, friendly service

Cons: Have to travel from the Cape to eat there.

great pizza.....my kids loved it

by unlcejesse

This place is great. My kids were fascinated with the way they roll out the pizza dough and flip it for everyone to see. It sure keeps the kids busy while their parents chowed on our pizza and calzone! The State House had so much meat on it and the chicken and broccoli calzone was to die for. We were stuffed for the whole day. The people there were very friendly and kept making sure all of the patrons were all set. The atmosphere was very warm. The employees treated people like they were in their home.

Best pizza and service

by hmslice

I am from suburbia, but was in the city last weekend and found my way to The Upper Crust on Charles. It was fabulous. The pizza was nice and hot while the toppings were plentiful. It was very busy, but the service was great and they do a great job of moving people in and out and make sure you get what you need. I cannot wait to visit all of their locations.

"second to none"

by kevinthepizzafanatic

All i have to say is "roni" I am a traditionalist, I don't really like more than one topping on my pizza, so if I'm not grabbing a slice of roni for lunch and/or dinner, I get a small prosciutto and fresh basil well done. This pizza reminds me of Siena, except they use a pecorino cheese in Siena. The pie at Upper Crust is actually a little less salty than the pie in Siena. And if I'm not in the mood for pizza I will just grab a chicken greek salad. Either way, I love to sit at the communal table and and chat, i've even gotten a couple of phone numbers while sitting there. A lot of young single people hang there and it's a great place to sit and read in the afternoon. Anywho, if you haven't been, you're only cheating yourself and your mouth.

Pros: great location

Cons: none really

Better than NYC...

by beaconhillfoodie

I have eaten pizza across the world, spent many years in New York where I had many favorites but the Upper Crust in Beacon Hill has by far the best slice around. I was in the other day, late for a meeting and in a rush needing something tasty and quick. The featured slice of the day was sausage and basil, it was exactly what I was looking for, thin crust, fresh ingredients and a tasty sauce. The counter guy was quick and courteous, he had me on my way in 4 minutes with a hot slice of goodness. I have since been back almost every day and have been impressed with the unique slice combinations they offer. Big fan of Boston's best slice.

Most fantastic slice of pizza I've ever had

by tessie24

My only complaint about The Upper Crust is that I didn't get a whole pie. I tried the slice of the day today and was absolutely amazed. It was a marriage of the perfect amount of cheese, sauce, and toppings on a scrumptious crispy crust. I have always been a firm believer that thick crust pizza was the only way to go, let me tell you: today the stubborn were converted. If you're looking for a fun place to grab a quick slice or indulge in an entire pie The Upper Crust is the place to be.

Pros: Great slice, great service, fun atmosphere to eat in (love the ceiling!!!)

Cons: I don't know how'll they'll ever top thier current perfection.

by rutkus2135

The Upper Crust Pizza is by far one of my favorite pizzas. Although it can get very busy (mainly due to the fact that others agree with me) it is worth it. The staff is always nice and it has a nice little ambiance that other food places don't. I highly recommend the BBQ chicken pizza. I don?t know if I have ever had anything as satisfying when it comes to pizza.

Friendliest People in the Business

by beaconhillres

I have loved the Upper Crust since day one - the pizza is consistently delicious - cheesy, crisp thin crust, slightly chewy, the best combinations - the one with eggplant and sundried tomatoes is my favorite! After all these years, it was my recent observation of excellence that prompted me to finally write a review.
I was on my way to work a couple of weeks ago and noticed a lot of activity inside the Charles Street location. I thought it was a little strange given the time in the morning, so I poked my head in the open door and saw a big group of young kids laughing, kneading dough, and intently watching the staff members make a pizza. During my next visit, I asked the manager about the group of kids. It turns out that the Upper Crust donates "pizza parties" to local schools. They open early and bring the kids in, letting them make their own pizzas, and hang out while the pizzas bake so they can eat them. I'm thrilled to be a regular patron of a pizzeria that gives to the community - especially to the kids!

Pros: Amazing pizza, fantastic and friendly service

The pizza is the best!!! Every time I go there, the pizza and the service are outstanding. The last time I was there, they had fresh squeezed lemonade outside the store which was great because it was extremely hot and it was very refreshing. I cannot wait until the next time I am in the area because I will definitely visit The Upper Crust.

by yummyinthetummy

I'm not normally a fan of thin crust pizza. I prefer normal, new york style, greasey pizza. I've been skeptical about trying Upper Crust for that simple fact. I didn't realize what I had been missing these past few years! I went in and had a fantastic experience! The place was crowded, so I began to realize that someone knew something I obviously hadn't been clued in on. I had an amazing pie! I can't believe I didn't go there sooner! I highly recommend the Upper Crust to ANY pizzza lover. It made my mouth happy!

Pros: Multiple locations, Excellent Food!

Cons: I'm going to gain weight, it's so good!

I waited over an hour for a

by antonellam

"I went in there because I was starving and did not have much time and I thought that the entire process of ordering a "slice of the day" would have taken less than 10 minutes in a non-crowded pizzeria (off time) was I ever so wrong. I waited over AN HOUR for my 1 slice of pizza. When I received it it was cold and just gross but by then i was late to my appointment so t I ate it anyway.

The problem was: the guy who calls out the names of the people who ordered could not pronounce my name (even though it is one of the most common names in Italian and any real italian knows how to pronounce my name!) so he put my slice of pizza on the side and continues giving pizza to people who coming in after me. Finally after a good 60+ minutes I asked where my slice is and he said "oh yea here it is" and took it from the top of the ovens (not in the ovens, but outside next to the boxes) and gave me a cold slice of pizza. The cashier (the guy who wears a hat that belongs in dorcester and NOT beacon hill) and the pizza making guy who job was to call out names started laughing at my name! How pathetic is that. Instead of apologizing or offering me a free slice of pizza I got humiliated.

Next time I will frequent the THREE other pizza shops in beacon hill (one even being more prestigious than the upper crust, and all being friendlier) They are not the only "high end" pizza shop in boston or beacon hill so stop it with the attitude or else you will go bankrupt. everyone i talked to either hates or love your place but when I talk they will be a lot more haters than lovers. 1 angry native beacon hill socialite=a whole lot of lost customers."

Cheap but decent

by me4533

Sure it may not be the cleanest or best pizza store in boston or even beacon hil but if you want a semi-quick lunch of a slice or two of pizza the Upper Crust is the place to go.

HOWEVER when you a large group or just ordering an entire pie the service takes forever. The crust tastes like they freeze it till they use it instead of constantly making new dough.

Once agan you getting what you paying for. To the one who mention to take someone on a first date here do not expect to get a 2nd date. Its not much of a "date spot" since most of the seating area is more a communcal seating and if you have my luck you will be sitting next to a screaming baby.

Pros: cheap

Cons: bad service

by pizzaexpertboston

I had to walk out of the Upper Crust due to the attitude I got from the cashier. This is not alain ducasse you are a little pizza shop that only been around for 5 years. they have to get their attitude problem fixed or else they would not make it in the restaurant world.

I agree with "fromboston" the upper crust is one pizza store that one would be better of not going to.
Rumors are that the upper crust employees come and here and write reviews. As all reviews I tend to ignore the positive and read only the negative because unless someone has a lot of time on their hand they won't write a positive review

Pros: location

Cons: bad service, soggy crust

BEST PIZZA IN BOSTON

by hungymamma

CONTRARY TO 'FROMBOSTON'S' REVIEW (which i don't believe for a second, as i eat at the upper crust 2-3 times a week and find it very well maintained and clean), this is some of the best pizza i have ever tried. i also recommend the salads (great when i'm on a health kick!) with a little grilled chicken, but signature pizzas are what brings me back. My husband often orders delivery during football season and we find if you re-heat the leftovers, they are as good the next day!

****i would like to say, whoever wrote 'fromboston's' review ought to be ashamed of themself. your claim is unsubstantiated and reads very bitter and angry - i don't think anyone in their right mind would believe anything you write from this point on. this location has been open for about 5 years and your rude comments are the FIRST of their kind. Those kids work very hard at creating a great atmosphere to eat and you try to tear it down with that bs?! Grow up.

Pros: Crust, Design, Unique Combos

Simply the Best

by gmemphis

The search is over! This is, by far, the best pizza I have found outside of Napoli (the origin of this type of pizza). My first taste of the crust and sauce (I was told to stop by for this specifically by a fellow pizza nut from Amsterdam) had me asking the employees for some to take back to Miami! The veggies were as fresh as I've ever had, and the creative specialty pizzas were a favorite of my wife (I stll say their margarita is the one to try if it is your first time - it is a 10!). The restaurant design was as cool as they come - great job! Now, OPEN IN MIAMI BEACH!! PLEASE!! Otherwise, start shipping those things down south!

Pros: Consistantly Great, Very Fresh Veggies, Cool Staff

Love at first bite

by pie_man

When i moved to Boston six years ago, my friend brought me to Beacon Hill and we went in to this cool little pizza place. The ceiling is like a wave of stainless steel, and the floor is like an extension of the table. They make the dough fresh every day and roll out your pie right in front of you. The service is good but they are very busy, so you got to talk fast. The slices are as big as a New York slice, but better than most New York pie i've had. The crust is thin and the cheese surprisingly light.
My favorite one is the Harvard St add italian sausage!!!
Anyways, you've got to go there, perfect first date spot too, not too expensive and very casual.

Pros: picturesque neighborhood!!!

Cons: hard to park if you're not a native, use the train or cab it.

Good pizza, okay service, bad delivery

by croll

I love pizza. It's something of an unhealty obsession of mine but, on the positive side, I've had some truly amazing pies in my life. The Upper Crust is great pizza. Now, their pizza is done in a thin and crispy crust style. Occasionally, it's true, you'll get a dud and the crust will wind up soggy. Often this has to do with the ingredients (too much grease) or perhaps just slow or sloppy service. But the pizza, on average, really is quite good. You're going to be unhappy if you're in the mood for deep dish, and you may occassionally wind up with a pizza of mediocre quality but this is the exception rather than the rule.

What does seem to be the rule is decidedly below average customer service. There seems to be a mentality here that because their pizza is so great, you should just be thankful they're talking to you. The fact that you're trying to give them money is inconsequential. This has been the prevelant attitude whether ordering in store (Brookline location) or ordering over the phone. Indeed, it's worse over the phone. Delivery times regularly exceed an hour (1.5 hours isn't uncommon), and I recently called six times in one night to try to place an order -- no answer 4 times, and after instantly being placed on hold the other two times I was eventually disconnected (yes, this was a hang-up). An e-mail sent as a complaint went unanswered.

A lack of sides or different items may also count as a minus, but the pizza is the star. If you're willing to put up with a wait and service that barely acknowledges your existence (except for that $20 please), you will walk away with a great pizza. You may wonder, however, whether it's as great as all the hype.

Pros: The Pizza, The Pizza, The Pizza

Cons: Service, Value, Little seating

Upper rated

by postulantbooty

Upper crust is upper rated. I was excited to try their pizza after hearing so much about it. It was about as good as something from a 7th grade cooking class. What's up with the burnt, black, chalky soot on the bottom of the pizza? How come I don't get that burnt, bad taste from the inexpensive, local pizza joint around the corner from my house? Ick. I thought Upper Crust's pie was soggy in the middle, chewy, cheeseless, had a flimsy crust & an overall bland taste. Thank god someone else picked up the tab. I'll stick with my local mom & pop joint.

Pros: location

Cons: burnt pizza, overpriced, snobby staff

Unique in a good way

by bleddrewsoe

When I first tried this pizza I was not overly impressed. But a few weeks later I found myself back there again and I wondered what was it that made me go back? It is the sauce....undoubted the FRESHEST I have tasted. I think that is what gives the pizza it's appeal....the whole thing seems like it is made from the freshest ingredients. So while I have had better "tasting" pizza, I still find myself coming here more frequently because the taste of this pizza is uniquely fresh which puts it over the top. I hope this makes sense....
