We wanted to personally thank the staff of St. Charles Animal Hospital for their warmth and kindness when we had to put our beloved cat, Calli, down unexpectedly on Christmas Eve. We had brought her in thinking it was just a "check up" to figure out why she had stopped eating over the past couple of days, only to find out she had a very large tumor in her stomach.

The prognosis was not good and we made the very difficult decision to have her put down at that time. The decision to put our pets down ?? and the sadness that ensues ?? is always hard, but everyone at St. Charles Animal Hospital did such an amazing job. The genuine caring and warmth showed by each and every person of that staff was overwhelming and greatly needed and appreciated by us. To know that the doctor (Dr. Siskovich) and technicians took this just as hard as we did let us know that our Calli was given the best treatment and left this world with people who truly cared about her. Their thoughtful actions during the whole procedure did more for us than words can say. As a final touch, they also sent flowers to our house on Calli's behalf, of which we also greatly appreciated.

I used to go to SCAH. Now I don't recommend them. Yes, care is technically good. BUT:

PRICES: sky-high, care doesn't justify the cost. Fees reflect high maintenance costs. They over-treat & over-charge. (EXAMP 1: Dog: 5 shots & test. SCAH: $206. NewVet: $101 (shots), $167 (whole visit): they deleted a $38 shot he didn't need; w/$40 physical & $23 dose of Vectra3D. - - EXAMP 2: Cat Spay: SCAH: $500 !! NewVet: $150.) Office: all-digital, mostly human-grade. Buildg lg, in pricey area. Business cds expensive: heavy, thick, pricey crdstck, embossed/COLOR custom logo (VistaPrint isn't gd enough?) That's a LOT of money to pay off - are human-gr digital x-rays necessary? My pets were fine for 30 yrs on less-fancy equip.

ATTITUDE: When I questioned treatment, I was dismissed, ignored, or told I was ignorant (I'm not: 35 yrs of pets). If I kept it up, they tried to manipulate me w/horror stories, not explain WHY. They were SO business-like I started feeling like a personal ATM: show them the pet, write the check. It felt impersonal: NewVet's staff greeted me like an old friend the 1st time.)

SCAH didn't really LISTEN to me. EXAMP: They kept harping on my dog's weight - a few lbs more than most his size, but it's 'cause he's a 2-breed mix, 1 w/heavy leg & chest muscles; he got the muscle build. Greenies to keep his teeth cleaner were discounted - they kept saying "they're only more calories". That my dog is on a carefully controlled diet & had lost 3 lbs on that diet, they couldn't comprehend.

They refused to fax scripts to Drs.Foster & Smith Pet Pharmacy, a legitimate, fully-state-licensed pet pharmacy in Wisconsin (online & bricks-&-mortar, certified by Veterinary-Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites, accredited by Nat'l Assoc. of Boards of Pharmacy, for all pet drugs, incl. compounding. DrsF&S is NOT 1-800-Pet-Meds.) By the time they refused to fax the scripts, I'd decided I trusted DrsF&S more than SCAH (& I told them that). NewVet is willing to fax scripts, so I can save $$$ on some drugs.

OVERTREATMENT: They constantly tried to panic me into spending money. I literally felt, at the end - when I was questioning everything, as I couldn't afford the fees - that they were trying to stampede me over a cliff. EXAMP: I asked WHY an all-indoor cat needs monthly flea&tick&worming, esp. in winter when bugs mainly aren't operating, & my dog gets Vectra3D year-rnd. All they said was, "Oh! One heartworm can kill a cat! They need it every month!" BUT, NewVet (& my research) told met heartworm is RARE in cats, & RARER in indoor cats. Cats don't eat feces or swim in infected water, so there's little chance of infection. And 25% or fewer cats actually show ANY heartworm infection - research shows cats have a lot of built-in immunity. This, NewVet told me - but not SCAH. So, NewVet said the cats can go w/out at least until spring. So I can spend less on my SIX cats' monthly meds (SCAH didn't want me to know this.)

When I questioned SCAH on the wisdom of some "recommendations" - boy, that got their backs up! Hostility, resentment (that I'd DREAM of questioning their judgment) was thick enough to cut with a knife. (Since when are vets gods? Even our doctors must be questioned on Whys & Wherefores.) I think also they were extremely upset that I questioned their professional abilities within the hearing of other clients - no doubt I was sowing discontent among the gods' worshippers in the temple. (Yes, this is snarky, but at least I'm not swearing, yelling, or getting REALLY personal right now.)

I was referred to St Charles Animal Hosp when our pit bull got sick and I can tell you that of all the vet's office's we've been to in the past this one is the absolute best, much to our heartache our sweet boy had to be put down and the staff and Dr Salmond were so compassionate and helpful, they made him and us very comfortable and gave us as much time as we needed, we have since gotten two more dogs and I couldn't think of a better place to trust their care to, the staff is wonderful, the office and treatment rooms are clean and I have never been treated with anything but respect, have always been able to get an appt that is convienent for me. I fully recommend them to anyone looking for the best vet's in town

This hospital has been so helpful with my pets. They are patient and the quality of care is fantastic. The doctors have always taken the time to explain things to me and the techs are knowledgeable too. They really treat my pets like they are their own. The front desk is very sweet and are always able to get us in to be seen, even if they have to squeeze us in. It is shocking to me to read in other reviews that teh place was dirty, because I never noticed the dog or cat smell. I have even been there when they were cleaning in the middle of the day. I love this hospital and I recommend it to everyone.

This Hospital is the best. I have been taking my dogs there for years and never once had a problem. They are great with my pets and are very caring. I have seen all the doctors there and love them all. I have told everyone I know who has pets and they have gone to have there pets seen there also and are more then happy with them as well. The staff is caring loving and extremely kind. The facality is clean and odor free unlike some places it will smell like cats and dogs but not here. They have immediate openings for an appointment. There prices are more than reasonable. If you want someone to be honest and helpful and if you have questions reguarding the well being of your pets then st. charles animal hospital is the place to go.

This over-rated vet clinic is dirty, overpriced, and has incompetent and rude management. They are resting on their laurels of being mentioned in the Washingtonian Magazine, but be advised the article was not based on quality but quantity of an online poll. The quality of care has gone down significantly. That's why the run coupons for their service. Other vets don't need to lure you in with coupons. Don't be fooled. The friendly front staff is stressed by the incompetent management, and the doctors rush through the exam that they charge $32-$64 to touch your pet and leave the tech to do everything. The techs look and smell like they just rolled out of bed. Take your beloved pet elsewhere where the service is professional, clean and competent, and your wallet is not squeezed. Check out other local vets who offer the same but better service and meds for less!
