A restaurant that bore the "Steven Starr" label used to count for something... nowadays it usually means this; cool decor, pricey albeit interesting drink list, snobby crowds, sub-par food and completely average overall experience.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am disabled woman and require a service dog and the Continental on Chestnut St. refused me and my friend service b/c of my service dog who was very visibly in his uniform and on duty. I talked with the waiter and staff and told them my rights and that he needs to be with me at all times and why and they demanded that I provide them with paperwork. I told them I was not required by law to carry or show ANYONE his paperwork and the vest and ID badge he was wearing is all they need to see. They cannot legally demand I tell them my disability either. The manager Tracy, yelled at me in front of other patrons. Everyone was staring at us, I was so humiliated I cannot even tell you. My blood sugar was dropping and I knew I needed to eat something quick so we went elsewhere since they refused to give me anything to eat or drink. I wonder if I would have had fainted or had a seizure if we had waited around, then they could have seen that my service dog always does his job. It is now 2010, ADA was passed in 1990. What really needs to happen so that disabled people or those with medical needs requiring service dogs like myself are on equal footing with the rest of the population?? Are people still so ignorant that they will not educate themselves on these issues when managing a restaurant in center city??

A girlfriend and I were going to a local performance and just happened to come across the Continental Mid-Town. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by a friendly hostess who gladly seated us in a booth by the window. Our server was also very friendly. Miso soup can be ho-hum so I didn't expect much...but they served a generous portion of the BEST miso soup I've ever tasted. We also got the Tempura Tofu and the Crab & Asparagus Crepes which were also delicious. Topped it off with the Chocolate Truffles (a perfect little dessert) and Carrot Cake. Cool atmosphere, hip decor, fun people watching, great location, friendly service, awesome food that was timed very nicely. Reasonably priced for the overall high quality. Bravo. I will definitely go back and bring friends or family.

The Hawaii Five-O is the best martini in the world! I can't go to the Continental without getting a few of these. The food is excellent, the people are beautiful, and the roof deck is AWESOME. Good luck trying to find the bathrooms when you're drunk though...they're down a few flights of stairs (that is, if you're on the roof deck or the upstairs bar).

Love this place- I go 3-4 times a year and it never disappoints. the menu is fun and there is something for everyone. I enjoy the specialty cocktails- The Hawaii 5-0 is my fave - tastes just like pineapple lifesavers! My friends love the Mexico City, although I suspect it's pure tequila with a splash of something pink.
The food is meant to be shared. A group of 4 of us usually orders 6-8 of the smaller plates. Some of the best include the cheese steak eggrolls, spicy tuna rolls, hummus, chicken skewers with peanut sauce, and the beet salad with goat cheese. The signature dish is their lobster mac & cheese, which isn't worth $18. Personally, I don't feel that any of their "entrees" are worth the price since they are the same size as the apps, and harder to share.
Desserts at this place are PHENOMENAL- everything is made in-house including the ice cream. The key lime lollipops deserve an award- and the graham cracker ice cream that is served with them could be its own dessert, it's SO good.
They don't take reservations- which for me is a plus since you can go there last minute and won't be turned away. You may have to wait a while, but finding a seat at one of the bars usually isn't too difficult- and they'll page you when your table is ready.
Whenever I have out-of town guests, this is my go-to place.

The lunch and dinner you really canoot go wrong with. It is a restaurant great for groups because you can order a bunch of stuff and share. I'd say go for the shoestrong fries, calamari salad, lobster mac n' cheese, the hummus and pita, and even the sushi is good. I had the roasted chicken and swiss for lunch one time and it was great, and everyone else I was with loved their sandwiches. It is a unique dining experience as well.

The Continental Midtown is just about my favorite place in the city to hang out. They've a great drink menu (my fave is the "French 75"), and the atmosphere is awesome, between the different colors, lighting, hanging bamboo chairs, and what I love in the warmer weather; a rooftop deck! Just wish it were bigger, but you can't have everything.

Although I do enjoy dinner at Continental Midtown, their brunch is by far the best thing they serve. The items on the menu are decadent and interesting. The morning cocktails are fresh and delicious. Surprisingly, they are accommodating to children at brunch, too- a great thing!!

I went to dinner at the Continetal Midtown recently had a good meal. The drinks and food are pricey and more than I want to spend regularly but the food was really delicious. We had the pumpkin pie cones for dessert and they were amazing. It's mostly small plates so it is fun to go with a group and share. The beer selection was poor.

I've eaten at Continental midtown a number of times and have never had a complaint about the food. The lobster mac & cheese is amazing. It is delightfully cheesy and tender and you'll never want another mac & cheese again. The calamari salad is refreshing and a great quick bite to eat. The calamari is perfectly cooked, never overdone and chewy. I would prefer that they take reservations as the waits can sometimes drag on and on, and during peak meal times it can be very loud, but overall, it's a great place for a nice, quick bite to eat.

I just recently went to Continental with my boyfriend for a Valenitines Day dinner and really enjoyed myself! It was my frist time going to a tapas resturant and I will surely be asking to go again! The food was great...........I loved the small portions! Left room for dessert.(gotta try the milk and cookies, it takes just like creme brulee without the sugar top!) I had the Thai Chicken with Peanut Sauce and my boyfriend had the lobster rolls. We also shared the hummus and pita chips! WONDERFUL! I had no clue until reading other reviews on here that they have an outside upstairs! Want to go back in the warmer months and sit outside! I already know what I am going to have next time I go! Philly cheesesteak rolls with fries! The waiter that we had was really nice and explained to me all about how the resturant works.......It's a great, hip place for a date!

I searched online for an international cuisine restaurant to take my mother before a show at the Wachovia Center. After reading some reviews and looking at the menu I decided here. What a terrific decision! Michael, our server, was courteous and helpful and on our next visit we will request him. We asked a ton of questions and being a server myself, I thought we were being a little bit of a pain. He stayed calm and extremely nice and attentive. My mother was espically happy that they carried fat free skim milk for her tea, which is rare for a restaurants. The tea and food presentation and taste were esquisite. The atmosphere was delightful with so many different decorations to discuss, espically while sitting in a hanging chairs. There was a nice variety of choices and after much deliberation my mother and I choose Ahi Tuna Tartare, shrimp & scallop spring rolls, hummus and a thai chicken dish. The tuna was to die for. It was so good that I put in a take out order to bring home to my husband (he also loved it). My mother is not found of Romaine lettuce which was part of the chicken dish so they happily substiuted Boston lettuce instead. It really helped make the dish. The hummus was tasty and the spring rolls were alright. The spring rolls didn't have much flavor but were a nice texture. I wouldn't order those again. The dessert presentation was so beautiful you almost didn't want to eat it. My mother enjoyed her raspberry chocolat cake while I savored my tirumasu like dessert served in a martini glass. The only negative thing that we experienced, or I should say my mother experienced, was she didn't appreciate the tempo of the music or the cool draft above her seat. Once we talked to the manager about the draft he corrected the problem immediately. So, over all, if you would like an experience in a unique restaurant with terrific service and exceptional food, this is the place for you. We plan on making another trip with realitives.

So the food here is good, but what you really should come for are the drinks and dessert! The many small chocolatey, creative bite-sized (so you won't feel too guilty) desserts are satisfying, and all of the drinks are great though I LOVE the pomegranate daiquiri and buzz aldrin the most. The upstairs outdoor bar is a great place to be in the summertime.

Just had to write a quick review and say that mid-town continental is an absolute delight. My wife and I have come to love it and eat there as often as we can. It is a great atmosphere for drinks on their roof and the food is always top notch. If you have never been, I promise it is as good as it's reputation.

I live in Manhattan and travel home to Philadelphia at least once every two months, and every time I always make a trip to Continental Mid-Town an absolute must! There is not a cooler roof bar anywhere in Manhattan that doesn't charge twice the price for drinks. Also, none of the investment-banker/mid-level executive attitude here, always beautiful, young, cool professionals pack the place. Food is decent, not overpriced, and great portions. Overall this is Steven Starz at his very best!

The first time I went to the roof of the Continental, I loved the energy, the coziness around the fireplace and the drink options. However, how tacky is it to get your $10 G&T in a plastic cup? Or your $9 Cabernet in a plastic wine glass? It's even worse that they display them around the bar and charge so much for their drinks. But that certainly doesn't diminish the attitude of the bartenders! Some of the worst service I've ever had at a bar, especially when it wasn't busy!

It's definately one of these places you go for the scene- that food is average for the price- if you are going to eat here- the seared tuna, wasabe mashed potatoes and fries are good- but the martinis by far are the best! I also enjoy the rooftop bar- however it does get very crowded and if you don't come early on the weekends you could be camped out on that sidewalk for hours, to find that it really wasn't worth it. Most of the staff lack social skills- the wait staff kind of plop your food down and disappear, they don't refill your water/ drinks and they don't clear your plates when needed- basically everything they are suppose to do... as a whole the staff- give you attitude that they really aren't cute enough to pull off. Hey! If I'm paying $11.00 for a tiny martini- you could at least be nice for the 5 minutes you are pouring my drink! But I have to give it to them- the atmosphere is fun and vibrant and there's always a great crowd- so you just basically have to take the service part out of the equation!

Overall, I really like the Continental Midtown. I've been there a few times and was generally impressed with each visit. My favorite menu items are the vegetarian soy burger with soy cheese which was acutally really good, considering I usually shy away from veggie burgers. I LOVE the schezuan shoestring fries (share with a friend!) and the wasabi mashed potatos. The continental salad was pretty boring and overpriced - not to mention huge, as are most of their portions here. However, this is not the case with the desserts, which are tiny individual portions! They are amazing regardless of size! I reccomend the mango-infused brownies with caramel sauce, peanut butter and jelly ice cream sandwiches, and cotton candy. Unfortuntealy, any table seating near the bar is VERY loud, and I've ended up there on two occasions. Also, the upper level has some strange seating with birdcage-like seats that hang from the ceiling. These seats are somewhat difficult to EAT in, since they are a bit further from the table than necessary and you are constantly trying to keep yourself from moving all over the place.

Overall, I really like the Continental Midtown. I've been there a few times and was generally impressed with each visit. My favorite menu items are the vegetarian soy burger with soy cheese which was acutally really good, considering I usually shy away from veggie burgers. Pros: creative menu options, large/shareable portions, fun drinks

Cons: limited parking, crowded, drunk yuppies at night

A great restaurant for any occasion. The food is great - usually amazing - and the drinks fabulous. The rooftop lounge is one of the best bars, if not the best, in Philadelphia. Of note, however, my friend's camera was stolen by an employee - so be wary while there - just shows you can't trust everyone!

We stumbled on this place while out wandering around. We did a lot of research on restaurants before the trip and this one was by far better than any of those from the list we visited. The cocktail platter of apps was great, and the cocktails wonderful. Our server was friendly and outgoing and the decor was very fun.

The Continental will be one of our first stops next time we visit!

Have you ever walked in to a restaurant where everyone is smiling and glad to see you? That's how I feel in this fun multi-level rest. Take advantage of the roof top after work during the week--it gets insanely busy on the weekends. Plan on a long wait Friday or Saturday. Serrvice staff here is knowledgable and attentive. Desserts were my favorite part of the meal--try the peanut butter cup and the fruit loops! This restaurant is just a fun place to experience!

I've been here twice, both times of lunch and I love the chairs and ambience. Our waiter was very nice and considerate, both times. I've tried the burger and the Thai chicken skewers with peanut sauce and both were delicious. The burger was HUGE while the Thai chicken was smaller portioned. The thing that makes me love this place is the strawberry shortcake. It's kind of a small piece for $3.50 but I love it so much.

I went for drinks, not for dinner. Very modern decor. I love the two way mirrors when you wait in line for the bathroom - you can see people and if they wash their hands!! I reccomend the "Champagne-A-Rama" drink - delicious! Cool seating if you are eating dinner with a group - circular tables include everyone. Busy and packed.

A good place to meet and mingle for a quick bite or a drink or two...The decor is great and you're bound to see someone you know or meet someone new.

Went to the Continental on 18th St. in Philly for dinner and cocktails. Some of what we ordered was okay, but most was not. Specifically, the crab pad thai noodles we ordered was LOADED with diced red and green peppers and didn't taste like pad thai at all. All I could taste was the peppers.

Also, I ordered a cocktail that was supposed to have all kinds of cranberry flavoring (liqeur, juice, etc) in it, but I swear it was grape Kool-Aid. There was grape Kool-Aid sugar all around the rim of my glass, it was watery, it was purple-colored, and it TASTED just like Kool-Aid! I might as well have stayed home and bought a five cent packet of Kool-Aid instead of wasting my eight dollars.

The only thing this restaurant has going for it is the atmosphere, which alright. Definitely don't come here primarily for food/drinks.

My co-workers and I went to the Continental after work for dinner and we had a really great time. The food and service was good. We ordered almost everything on the menu and split it and to be honest I was satisfied with almost everything I tried. The desserts were cute, fun and good. The waiter was very friendly and the atmosphere was just right. I would give this restaurant a B+. Great for lunch with friends or happy hour with co-workers.

Not sure why this place gets the business it does . . . food is OK at best and on the shrimp cesar salad I had there were 3 (only 3) shrimp. Disappointing. There are many better places to go in Philly.

Went here for the first time last night with a group of friends. I like the location in Old City - the drink and food prices are quite reasonable, especially for the neighborhood, and the food is REALLY good. Here, similar menu, but all prices are about $3 more -- and the food's not as good! The calamari salad with bitter greens is to die for at the original location, here it is smaller and the greens are mostly (boring) romaine! Drinks are incredibly pricey -- an $8 martini (fine, but the same drink is $6.75 at the original location!) and a shot of (top-shelf, but come ON) bourbon was $21.50. Give me a break!! We had a good time, and the food was ok, but I doubt I'll be back. There are many better bars and restaurants in the Rittenhouse area.

the food is a bit above average, nothing special..however, I do like the bite sized desserts. The crowd is very young, and for so much square footage, it is extremely cramped. a little too much hype, and the staff needs to tone down with the Starr-bootcamp (limiting the table visits so that your guests can enjoy their meal would be a good start!) ADVICE: Do not go on a Saturday when you will wait over 2 hours and then hopefully get a call on your cell phone from the host. when they finally called, we had already enjoyed our dinner somewhere else. NOTE: I was able to be seated within 15 minutes on a Tuesday night. Watch out for scenesters trying to slip the unsuspecting hosts cash to get seated! its not worth all of that

I live down the street, it was just ok when it opened. I've been back again recently, looks like they finally got it together. Foods good, friendly vibe. The drinks are good (a little expensive). The women that work there are so hot it doesn't matter.

Continental Mid-Town is one of my favorite new Philly restaurants. Food is above average, and reasonably priced for the quality. The atmosphere and food-sharing make for a very fun experience. The bite-sized desserts were especially yummy.

Stephen Starr's uptown branch of his original Continental is a draw for its affordable global tapas and chic cocktails. Bigger than the Second Street version, the restaurant has a roof-deck bar and sensory overload decor to keep the placeā€¦
