Dr. April Barbour, head of the Internist Practice, IGNORED my letter of complaint about my terrible experience with this group (especially the staff) last February. Letter follows.

February 24, 2011

April Barbour
Director
Division of General Internal Medicine
GWU Medical Faculty Associates
2150 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20037

Dear Ms. Barbour

I am writing to complain about my indifferent, rude, and unprofessional treatment today as a ??new patient? by the front office staff at GWU Medical Faculty Associates?? Internal Medicine Department. GWU Medical Faculty Associates is my Primary Care Provider under the Optimum Choice Preferred, UnitedHealthcare.

I am suffering from serious hypertension and had a reading of 160 over 110 today (which I related to your staff). I also mentioned I was very concerned about getting medication for my condition.

After a family emergency in January, I rescheduled my ??new patient? meeting with GWU for today. Two days ago, I got a voicemail message from your staff confirming the appointment for 2:45 p.m. today. While I had ??thought? the appointment was for 8:30 a.m., I assumed there must have been a need to reschedule for later in the day. Why else would they leave me a message to come in at 2:45 p.m?

The voicemail was inaccurate. When I arrived at 2:35 p.m., I was told that my PCP (Dr. Reenivasan ?? sp? ?? my ??formal? PCP is Dr. Adam Possner, but he is not taking new patients) was not available and the appointment had, in fact been for 8:30 a.m. A staff member said she would tell Dr. Reenivasan that I was there, and also tell her what my blood pressure reading was.

After about 20 minutes, I was told that Dr. Reenivasan could not give me any medication since she did not have my health statistics. I was told that the ??best option? would be to go to the emergency room to get some medicine to ??tide me over.? This is very frustrating, since I did go to Suburban Hospital??s emergency room and was told to see my PCP. I had the same problem with the CVS Minute Clinic. No one will help me get my medication!

I was then told the earliest I could get in for my next ??new patient appointment? was March 17th. I felt very upset, and told them I was concerned for my health and scared of having a stroke. I felt the staff was very indifferent to me. I told them then that I would find a new doctor.

The thing that hurt the most about this was that, as I was leaving, the staff at the front desk and further back were snickering among themselves!

I am very upset by this and afraid for my health if I have to almost another month. I am disgusted that I am paying significant premiums every month for health care and am shut out when I desperately need medicine. I am going to find a new PCP and try to find a ??paid? clinic to give me some medicine to get my blood pressure down.

I was concerned about your practice when I read the reviews on Yelp (which I am enclosing, with staff difficulties highlighted) and my concerns were, unfortunately, confirmed today.
Very truly yours,
Maureen Murphy

I like the docs at this facility a lot, but the admin staff are just horrible. I have had such a bad experience with the admin/office staff that I am leaving the practice. It's a shame because I think MFA provides great medical care. But the challenge of simply calling and making an appointment and dealing with administrative mistakes is just too much to deal with. Scheduling appointments is a nightmare and you often have to schedule months in advance. The admin staff are rude and generally incompetent. When you finally get to your appointment, you're often left waiting for hours. On several occassions I've waited to see my doctor up to 3 hours AFTER my scheduled appointment. I understand that doctor offices usually run late and I have no problem waiting upwards of an hour, but 3 is excessive. In addition, calling MFA via telephone is a frustrating and time-consuming experience.

I have been going to see Dr. Gaba for years: she is an excellent doctor whose knowledge and bedside manner inspires confidence. All of the residents, interns, ultrasound techs and nurses are excellent - especially Tonya. Once you have an appointment, you won't be disappointed. The wait to get in, however, is becoming longer and longer, which is unrealistic for pregnant women who need to be seen somewhat regularly. Also, dealing with the front desk staff is a constant challenge: at best they are civilized and routine, at worst rude and pointedly unhelpful. I can imagine that it is a stressful job, but there is definitely something to be said for a pleasant demeanor! I would still recommend the doctors in this practice and the health care is quality.

The physicians on this team, including their residents and interns, delivered all three of our children and have been my doctors for over 20 years. Their standard of medical care is the highest -- GW is a well-regarded teaching hospital and these doctors are always at the top of their game. In addition to their medical qualifications -- which are most important, after all -- I have found every one I have dealt with to be courteous and compassionate. Over the years I have had several favorites -- some have moved on to other positions. Dr. Larson -- a truly amazing character and outstanding ob/gyn -- has always been the best for me. He is also the expert on pre-natal testing -- which he did for all three of our children. The staff is friendly and the attending physicians set a tone of kindly competence, which is followed by all the medical staff. As mentioned in a previous review, the fact that this is a teaching hospital means that you will sometimes be examined by interns and medical students -- though you can request not to be. But I can live with that, knowing that the next generation of ob/gybns will be taught at the highest level. Maybe they will be the ones delivering my grandchildren! It's the least I can do.

When I came to the area, a family member suggested I try one of the doctors in this practice--Dr. Gaba. She is wonderful!! One of the best doctors I have ever seen. she always makes me feel like her one and only patient and has a great bedside manner. This is a practice associated with GW Hospital, so that have lots avaialble at their practice. One down side is that you will usually have to wait awhile to get an appointment to see some of the doctors, like Gaba, as she is always booked. The good thing is that all fo the doctors are wonderful and talented. Many have been given the top doc award by the Washingtonian. It is a teaching facility, so know that many of the doctors will have students with them, so if that bothers you, I would not choose this facility. I have been pleased, though and would recommend this practice to anyone.
