I went to Spa Ja initially with a Groupon massage I had been given by a friend who goes there. I had iced tea while I waited and there were cookies, cakes, nuts... to nibble on. I loved the massage and everything about the place. I have since been back for hair, highlights and a cut and Brazilian waxing. This is my new place.
This was my third massage here over the course of one year - all three massages were great but the service is TERRIBLE unfortunately. I hardly ever feel compelled to write a review but I think these three experiences warrant it. The gentleman behind the counter does not seem happy and complained to me, a customer, that all of his customers rip him off by buying groupons and other discounted services. I said that I have returned numerous times to other places - the discount served as a way to bring me in. He continued saying 'we will see if you come back but I doubt it.' What's worse, there is a woman who I believe works in the salon area who sits on the reception couch and talks about the customers. Another patron finished when I arrived and as soon as she left, they began talking about her 'squeaky voice' and 'little stature' and how it reminded them of some horribly annoying person they new in highschool - all in front of me.
I hate to give this place this review as the actual massages were very good. I hope their masseurs are able to go to another spa with great service to compliment their talents.
purchased a groupon deal for a brazilian wax the lady was great, i will definitely go back thank you Spa Ja
Horrible - Don't book here - flaming receptionist was so rude and lied. You are a receptionist for a cheap salon you ugly idiot - get off your high horse - you are the lowest of the low. Flaming dog!!
I bought the Groupon deal for Spa Ja thinking that it seemed like an ok price for a decent looking place. Today I called to book an appointment and was informed by the incredibly rude receptionist that they are completely booked for massages on weekends through April. WHAT?! This is a third tier spa with mediocre service, mediocre decor, and outrageous prices. In what world are they booked for every hour of every weekend through April? I truly thought the receptionist was joking when she said this. Not only did she not apologize or make any effort to try to find me an appointment, she rudely hung up on me when I expressed by surprise at hearing this news. For $130 you can go to a much nicer spa in NYC with better massages and certainly better service. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!
My massage at Spa Ja was very disappointing. The masseuse I had gave a very mediocre back rub -- she didn't even begin to get the knots in my back despite the fact that I asked for more pressure. Instead of feeling significantly better after this massage, I felt like I hadn't even had one.
After a long day this was a lovely spot to unwind. Friendly and professional, James was able to fit me right in for an hour massage and half hour reflexology. Eka my therapist was just wonderful. Hitting all those tight spots. I will definitely be back. Worth your time to visit this sweet oasis in midtown.
Let me preface by saying that I am a massage expert. For years I had weekly massages from professional medical therapists in addition to occasional leisurely massages. Until today, never have I experienced a massage and service so appalling.
First, the establishment looks horrific from the outside and cheap and dingy on the inside. Not just straightforward and honest cheap, which I can kind of respect, since at least it's not pretending to be something it's not, but the worst kind of cheap - cheap tryin' to look expensive, dirty tryin' to look clean. Don't be fooled by the photos posted by the place, which are airbrushed glamour shots. Roses, candles, fish bowls? Oh please!
My massage therapist came down after about 10 minutes, and I immediately got a bad feeling. She looked like a glum, miserable person. I scolded myself for making snap judgments based on appearances. I shouldn't have. The treatment room - just like the reception area, except packed into a 4 x 6 room and lit with a black light. Yeah you heard me, a black light...you know, like at a rave? I immediately cringed and felt claustrophobic. Products cluttered every inch of an entire wall. My lady asked if I wanted Swedish or deep tissue, and if there were any areas I wanted her to focus on. I don't know why the hell she bothered asking. I told her I needed deep tissue and the entire hour on my back, shoulders and neck. I was in extreme pain, so I was very vocal about my knots and trigger points and how much pressure I wanted - and she did NOT like that, even though she asked! I wasn't about to pay for and suffer in silence through another weak and ungratifying massage. She hit a few knots in the beginning on my shoulders and for a few seconds I thought I might have been wrong, but then she proceeded to lightly rub anything but the areas I specifically pinpointed for her, as if she were mindlessly scrubbing a floor. When I reiterated that I really needed her to work a specific knot, she got completely hostile, said she knew what she was doing and didn't need to get this particular knot because she was generally massaging the whole area and that would be enough relief. SAY WHAT?! I could actually feel her hatred and resentment oozing through her fingertips. After suffering 10 minutes of useless rubbing with the flat part of her fist, I asked her to go deeper and use her fingers. At that point, she proceeded to vindictively dig her elbow with 10x the pressure into the canal right by my spine and raked it across my ribs. My body jolted. I howled in pain, "You just dug your elbow into my ribs!" I incredulously listened to her angrily explain that she hadn't even touched my ribs, which were buried deep within. Deep within where?! My skin?! Then she stormed out saying she would get the front desk to send up another massage therapist. Shocking? Incredible? Wait, it gets better.
Fast-forward 10 minutes - enter massage therapist #2, an older Brazilian woman. Immediately she begins to antagonize and attack me, asking what happened because the other woman has never had any complaints 'til now. Ironically, she lectures me on how they aren't doctors and can't apply a lot of pressure because they can't risk breaking bones or hitting nerves or organs, despite my cracked rib, can't focus on just one area b/c it's not good for you, and that I can't expect to have all my ailments healed in one session. Who the hell asked you to heal me, lady? Don't I have the right to pay for some temporary relief? And why the hell are you offering deep massages? She also yelled at me for trying new massage therapists when I should stick to just one I've liked and called American massage therapists ignorant and disgraceful. Lastly, my poor friend walked out with severe neck pain she didn't have after a similar massage, minus the verbal and physical combat.
i don't like the entrance but once you start walking up you can tell they try to overcome the building limitations and by the time you get there, it's all black, red, water trickling, soothing decor....but watch out, the Groupon "deals" are no deal! it's a TOTAL SCAM...i'm still bitter (and it's been 2 months since my visit) because i was misled by the unattractive, unpolished, unprofessional man at the front desk. when i booked my appt he was mostly concerned with telling me about his back problems (i noticed he wore a back brace.) to his credit, he was honest when i asked him which i should get, either reiki or massage. he said the reiki wasn't that good so i should get a massage and since i was interested in the stone and deep tissue options to go for the FUSION MASSAGE which combines both. that was helpful but all help was cancelled out by my SEETHING anger upon paying for my service when it suddenly cost TWICE what was quoted. it was a CLASSIC BAIT & SWITCH. the groupon i had was from a friend who'd moved to Argentina. it had expired but the spa said they'd give me half off. i thought 50% was off the face value of the groupon. i said as much when booking the massage. imagine my SHOCK and anger when after a great, soothing, firm, deeply nourishing massage i got tense as hell right away when the woman at the desk demanded TWICE what i expected to pay. the groupon i had was worth $120 services but had expired so i figured i had a "store credit" of $60 so i got the $70 massage (30-min) which meant i expected to spend the difference of $10 plus whatever for tip. The "special deal" they were giving me had NOTHING to do with the groupon but rather THEIR reaction was to charge me half the cost of the service, so i had to pay $35 (half the $70 massage normal charge). it was almost 3x what i meant to spend. sadly, because of this low ethical business, i was unable to afford to tip my masseuse. i paid $35 for the massage which would have been totally fine if not cheap for NYC, but in principle, i felt so hoodwinked and abused, i just got the hell outta there. and the weird tea with big fruit berries floating around was OVERRATED. not good. and all the products that are so supposedly organic are easily seen ANYWHERE else so this place ain't special. please. not at all.....the masseuse lady was great though. i really liked her. i told her that so she slipped me a little note with an address of the other place she does massages and she agreed it's RIDICULOUS what spa ja charges for the same service as her other spa job in NJ. just be careful if you go here. GET PRICE CLEARLY STATED UPFRONT.....unless you like crappy surprises. however i do wanna mention i remember a silver necklace i really loved. they have an area of knick knacks of jewelry and stuff to buy. they sure love taking your money.
I have visited many spas in the city, searching for a comfortable place for facials and massages. I first discovered Spa Ja from Groupon, with an amazing deal.
Not too long after, Spa Ja sent me a promotional offer
that was even better than the Groupon deal.
I enjoyed a wonderful microdermabrasion and deep tissue massage. To go without a deal, is a bit over my budget but if there's a deal, I will literally, run there!
The spa is owned by a very sweet couple. They offer you complimentary tea with fresh berries. They also have nuts, cookies, etc in the sitting area while you wait. Everyone there is very attentive. The outer appearance is not pleasing, but the interior design is definitely worth forgoing the exterior.
Thank you Spa Ja for such an enjoyable experience! The treats and tea were a great way to start my visit. A very relaxing and nicely appointed space with friendly and professional staff. My treatment exceeded my expectations and I will happily return for additional services. The products I purchased were unique and top shelf, good job on all fronts! I intend to recommend your facility to my friends.
I used to go to this place a lot for my bikini wax. However, it was only lately that I started noticing that THEY DO NOT REPLACE THE APPLICATORS after every use!!!! They will use a different one for each client but they will however double dip that applicator for the same client. Ladies -- think about just any disease you can get from this! I brought up this problem to the front desk -- what if the person before me had any STDs or any other skin disease -- how am I protected from that if you double dip that applicator!? He simply shrugged his shoulders and said that the heat will kill all the germs!!!! Horrible, horrible, horrible. Not going back, while I do love the service, not risking my delicate parts for an unhygienic practice like this!!
I've been coming to this spa for a few years and my experience has always been great. From the moment you walk in, you are treated to a hot towel and delicious tea. I love this tea!! I've gotten wax services from both Flor and Isa and they have always been good and efficient. They use organic wax which seems less painful for me. It's very clean which is important to me. Overall, I've enjoyed my experience here.
Front of house service via an older male receptionist was surprisingly unfriendly and unwelcoming for my first visit to this spa. Right off the bat, terrible first impression. Organic brazilian facial ($130) was good and Victoria was very nice. I also agree he was short with me and condescending. He added back on the 20% discount, for all new clients, that Victoria deducted from my bill, because I used my kgb coupon. There are no fine details indicating this could not be used with another offer neither on the coupon nor the website. I said okay. He barely uttered a small thank you when I left. I'd say if you do not like new patrons using kgb and all other groupon sites to step into your spa, then kindly don't offer it! There are tons of spas in the city. I enjoy how you spend your career teaching children how to be kind to others, and you encounter a dismal man so unhappy with his job with people. I urge you to not employ this gentleman if it is worth losing potential clients over. It left a terrible taste in my mouth and a lasting impression.
I've been going to Spa Ja for a couple of years to get my bikini waxes and they do a great job! Fast, clean and efficient. It's never really a fun process anywhere you go, but their skill and technique minimizes the pain. I have recommended it to several friends.
I did not expect to get an appointment but I stopped in just to see and the super nice guy behind the counter helped get me an appointment...had to call him later...so it worked out.
I must say i was not planning on a hair appointment but after complementing him on the new hair department and being introduced to Linda I just felt very comfortable and got an appointment with her too. I could not be happier with Linda and would recommend her to anyone. Very talented and extremely nice person. Still the A plus service, it's an experience as well as treatments. You wind down the minute you walk in, aroma therapy, steamed face towel offered on tray when you walk in, tea, nice people, etc.
Pros: Best Facial, Fabulous massage Best Wax
I went to this spa because of a gift certificate that they gave me.
I choose an hour swedish massage and it last for sure for shorter time and I am not even sure they gave me a swedish massage, instead of being relaxing it was hurting, probably they switch to a deep tissue massage, without asking me.. I had pain on my back for two days. Not relaxing at all. The woman that gave me massage, was complaining with other coworker that she gas to do a hard work on me, she didn`t know i could hear her obviously, totally unprofessional.
I ask for a brazilian pedicure too and it was done in a rush. Not a nice environment at all. don`t be buyest by the pictures on the website is totally not nice as it looks.
DON`T GO THERE and DON`T BUY GIFT CERTIFICATE
Cons: bad service bad environment
DO NOT GO TO THIS SPA! The service was horrible! My boyfriend and I arrived approximately 5 minutes early. They made us wait about 15 minutes before taking us and then once we got into the room they took their time coming in. I wouldn't have minded this at all except that when I looked at my watch when it was over she stopped a few minutes before what should have been a full hour IF we started on time. So what was supposed to be an hour massage was more like a 40 minute massage. In addition, I signed up for a Fusion massage which is deep tissue and my boyfriend for a Swedish. My massage was no where near a deep tissue and I mentioned this to the woman giving the massage and she acted confused and said "next time you should get the deep tissue". It was at that moment I realized that my boyfriend probably got my massage and I got his. As soon as he came out he complained his massage was too "deep" and he asked his massage therapist what kind of massage he had and she told him "Fusion" which is deep tissue with hot stone. So clearly they made a mistake and neither one of us enjoyed our massages. The spa took NO responsibility for it and on top of it wanted to charge us BOTH for the deep tissue which is more expensive even though one was booked as a swedish. The woman behind the desk didn't seem to care at all and did not acknowledge the mistake and kept arguing with us. All we wanted was to be charged appropriately. We didn't even press the issue that THEY made the mistake and gave us the wrong massages. They did nothing to accommodate us(not even an apology). This is the worst customer service I have EVER experienced in MANHATTAN...period. Waste of time and money! Not a good massage and we got yelled at so I left with more stress than I went in with!!
PS, I think the good reviews on here are probably them posting or people they know! There is no way this spa deserves any stars
Cons: Not a good massage, made mistakes, worst customer service
Spa ja is good for a fast, efficient wax, although the room is small, the table doesn't look very clean and the door opens directly into the hall so when the therapist comes in anyone outside can see in.
I would skip the massage. The rooms are pretty noisy and way too cold. There is a strange blue lighting scheme inside that doesn't do anything for the place. But the massage itself was really almost bad- cold hands are such a no no! Fast, jerky movements, I love massages and I really didn't enjoy much about this one.
Pros: Good waxing
Cons: Ambience is lacking, massage almost bad
I was excited when Spa Ja was running a promotion on Groupon. I had always been meaning to go have a facial there, but they are not convenient to my home or work, so I hadn??t made the trip uptown to check them out. I had a meeting in the area so I scheduled an appointment in the afternoon.
The spa is very nice in appearance but was shocked by how awful my facial was!! After steaming for only a short amount of time, she started on my extractions. They were extremely painful and I asked the esthetician if maybe a needed to steam for a little longer. She said that it wasn??t necessary and continued on. I have been to over a dozen spas for facials around the city and have never experienced such pain. When she was done, she added a serum which left my face feeling greasy- the last thing you want after a facial.
The worst part of all was that I was left with red marks and open wounds on my face. It has been 5 days now, and my face is still red and peeling in places. I am just praying now that I don??t scare. I never believed reviews before when people said they get scared by a ??professions spas?- I mean how does a spa like this stay in business? Without the Groupon the facial with tip and tax would have cost $145. There are so many better spas around the city that give amazing facials for half the price. Maybe I just had a fluke experience, but I wouldn??t risk it.
Cons: Painful, Scarring, Attitude
I have been coming to Flor for my Brazilian wax...she is the best...and of course is painless..Thank you Flor...and Spaja for a warm and professional stuff
I go to Iza. She is extremely thorough. After the waxing she goes over the whole area with a tweezer and makes sure that not a single hair is missed (which is nice considering that many poor reviews written about waxing services at other salons complain of being sent home with stray hairs). She is extremely professional, and quick. I am in and out in under 15 minutes every time. This is well worth the money!
Pros: Very fast, thorough, and as pain free as possible
I am an African-American female and I have found a new place for a Brazilian wax. Val did a great job! She took her time and it was mostly painless...I couldn't believe it. My husband it still thanking her for doing such a wonderful job. I was so grateful for the warm and friendly environment. After leaving my old spa I've truly found somewhere a lot better at a reasonable price. See you guys soon!
Pros: Minimal Pain
Cons: None to date
I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the commitment that Iza at Spa Ja has shown me with helping me clear my adult acne. My skin was truly bad and after trying numerous doctors and methods to clear my skin, I was at the point where I almost just wanted to give up. I began going to spa ja just for their fabulous waxing services and she noticed over time my face becoming worst and my demeanor changing. After a consulation, during which she explained everything she was able to do and how it worked, I began the cold light treatments.
I noticed results the first time and the results just kept getting better with each treatment. She was professional and fabulous to work with. I recommend her to anyone having trouble with adult acne or just for a great facial.
Val is great for facials and waxing as well and the whole staff is friendly and warm.
Pros: IZA and VAL are the best
Cons: none so far
Tucked away near Columbus Circle I was introduced to this fabulous day spa by my boyfriend. The staff are extremely welcoming and friendly, you're greeted with scented towels, hot berry tea and piles of fruits, nuts and organic cookies (always a huge bonus), and later led upstairs to have your treatment. Having tried many of NYC's I can honestly say that this one is very much worth the money and the entire experience is lovely. The therapists are lovely, in particular, Val gives the best oxygen facial I"ve ever had in the city and while its not 'giving it away', its really worth the spend as the glow lasts for about a week and you really notice the difference over a period of time. They use lots of natural and organic products and the caliber is much higher than many of Manhattan's other spas. Its worth the investment. Also, did I mention the brazilians?! Trust a brazilian to be fabulous at this - again, Val gave the best brazilian bikini wax I"ve ever had - again not the cheapest BUT it lasts people and its worth every penny as it lasts 2 times longer than other cheapy waxes at mediocre salons. I'd hugely recommend a visit.
Pros: Val's oxygen facials are worth every penny
I enjoyed the massage. Price was Ok but nothing more. Location was decent. I was treated on time. Did not want to buy any products.
After a week of stress i decided to treat myself to a day of pure satisfaction!!!! it's like an oasis of pure bliss, the staff was great and very good at what they do best here. i felt pampered from the body scrub to the massage with the stones. i didn't want to leave when it was over. i wish i had extra funds to do this more often cause it sure relieves some serious tension and stress. i got a russian lady but i wish it was a muscular man instead!
Pros: great 1 hr / no rush
Cons: wish there were men doing the massage
I can only speak for the service that I received there - the Brazilian mani/pedi - but I highly recommend this place. I'm no spa expert; this is the third spa I've been to and the first time I've felt so welcome and at ease. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by Nina, who gave me a warm aromatherapy towel to place over my face and relax. She then introduced me to Jeane who handled my mani/pedi. As Jeane worked on my feet, another woman asked me if I would like the iced or hot tea. I had both and both were wonderful creations with fresh blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries. She came back with a tray of fruit and brownies. I munched, read, and talked to Jeane as she exfoliated, massaged, and polished. They really took care of me! I think their prices are somewhat comparable to other spas, maybe a little more expensive, but I would gladly pay that premium for awesome service!
Pros: service, quiet & private setting
Cons: none yet
I'm a spa person and have been to many spas in NY, other states and outside the United States. I highly recommend Spa Ja. You get personal attention, excellent service and a very relaxing environment - one that you truly expect when you go to a spa. If you'd like to escape for a few hours or treat yourself, this is the place to go. Facials and massages are brilliant!
I HAVE BEEN A CLIENT OF SPA JA FOR 2 YEARS.IT IS MY HOME AWAY FROM HOME.ALL THE SERVICES I DO ARE BEYOND BEING GOOD THEY ARE FABULOUS.FACIALS,MASSAGE DETOX.BODY SCULPTING,LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE.I HAVE NOT EVER WRITTEN A REVIEW.THIS ONE I HAD TO DO,NOT JUST ABOUT HOW WONDERFUL SPA JA IS.I WAS DISGUSTED ABOUT THE REVIEW THAT "SPAGIRL OR WHATEVER"WROTE.IT IS THE MOST VICIOUS UNTRUE REVIEW POSSIBLE.FIRST OF ALL THE "SHE"OWNER HAS NOT BEEN TO THE SPA IN SIX MONTHS..SHE IS VERY,VERY,VERY ILL AND HAS BEEN DOING TREATMENT IN AND OUT OF THE HOSPITAL.NOT ONLY I MYSELF BUT ALL OF HER "TRUE" CLIENTS HAVE BEEN PRAYING FOR HER.SHE IS A KIND AND UNIQUE SOUL AND SHE DOES NOT PROMISE "THINGS" TO CLIENTS SHE ONLY HELPS THEM IN ANY WAY SHE CAN."SPAGIRL OR WHATEVER" GET A LIFE AND TRY TO DO SOMETHING USEFUL.
Spa Ja brazilian pedicure is just perfect and all the staff very friendly...these guys (Valerio and Isa) are able to make your feet become as smooth as baby feet. And nothing in comon with current pedicure, where you are behind a window with a girl who do not really pay attention to your feet (and to you).
At Spa Ja, you will have your pedicure in a private beautyful black and red room, with their fabulous tea, pastries and fruits...
Schedule 45 min for this Brazilian Pedi, you won't regret the little 50$!
PS: also try their brazilian bikini waxing with Val, their massage and their facial (with Isa)
Pros: the perfect decor, the quietness of the place, the staff
TREAT YOURSELF to an amazing treatment at Spa Ja's - The healing began upon entering the hallway and ascending into the tranquil space - every detail has been taken into consideration which added to my experience of well-being. I was greeted with warmth and welcomed, my coat and bags were carefully tucked away, then a luscious, organic, delicious, anti-oxidant packed fresh berry tea was placed in my hands as I was encouraged to snuggle in and relax.
Next, the treatments were clearly explained and I selected a custom massage package. I went upstairs and was inspired by the decor and attention to quality from the fresh, fluffy towels to the organic and holistic products to the soothing music to the state of the art massage tables and the cleanliness! The room was lovely, warm, and [did I mention] clean?! Yes. I felt safe and very comfortable.
My massage therapist had the hands and heart of an angel. Her technique was expert and her personal presence both comforting and light. The combination of meditative music and aromatherapy soothed my [very busy] mind and my skin drank up the moisture-packed massage cream as my therapist worked skillfully across the landscape of my knot-entangled back. I surrendered within moments and was transported to Heaven [my definition of Heaven per my Spa Ja experience: I forget who I am, all worry and pressure dissolve and is replaced by the most incredible joy of being present, alive, in the moment and the moment FEELS exquisite to every aspect of my being] as long term stress knots dissolved with care.
I did NOT want the session to end! So I booked another and gifted those I love to spread the joy and well-being and have been thanked everytime!
Go to Spa Ja's now. You'll feel like an ascended master afterwards and probably act like one too...and in NYC, that's a good karma. Thanks for your commitment to excellence - Spa Ja style!
Peace out - AMD
Pros: Ambience, attention to details, professional and courteous staff and qualified therapists
On a holiday visit to NYC I headed for my favorite Spa in the whole world. Spa Ja on West 56th St. James and Giovanna have created a unique oasis. All organic, with superb estheticians. After my usual fabulous facial and mani/pedi I was introduced to a new member of their team - Micheal Red Sky a Cherokee Indian who does traditional Cherokee energy work and massage. After my session I find, unbelievably, that I can now walk 2 miles a day, lift weights and workout on a treadmill. Activities that that I had not been able to do for a year. I would encourage anyone to take a leap of faith and book an appointment ASAP.
I am a huge spa lover , especially for mani and pedis, so after visiting SpaJA for a number of services I decided to give their mani/pedi a try. I was there about two weeks ago and i cannot complain on their customer service. I was greeted warmly, offered a cup of tea and everyone was so attentive. My nail tech greeted me warmly and took me upstairs. She let me into a very cramped room. I was expecting a nice little tub with water jets so I can just relax but all i came across was a ceramic bowl. She asked me to sit down and then filled the bowl with water from the sink in the corner and put my feet inside. She then proceeded to put my feet on her lap and start filling. After putting scrub on my legs and feet she washed it off with the same dirty water thats in the bowl and let my feet sit in the dirty water. After she finished with my feet she proceeded onto my hands, it was your typical $10 manicure which was nothing special. The whole experience seemed so cheap. There were nail files and dirty brushes that were laying around and the sanitizer seemed so old and dirty. She had me go downstairs while my nails were still wet, i ended up messing everything up because they weren't dry. I was so disappointed because I paid $50 and that was so not worth it. i felt that it was so cheap and kind of dirty. I really like SpaJa but I will not be back, i feel like I could have gotten so much better quality for $50. They are warm and friendly but don't waste your money on mani/pedi, go else where. This is a nice high end spa, but their mani/pedis seem like your typical whole in the wall nail place.
Pros: Very Nice staff
Cons: Horrible cheap feeling mani/pedi
I'm surprised at all the good reviews here. I bought a tanning package at Spa Ja. They were very high-pressure in their sales tactics, trying to get me to upgrade, then to buy lotions, etc. (the woman assured me that tanning lotion was an absolute necessity.). The way they greet you is nice, giving you a warm wet cloth and some snacks. But honestly, I was a little creeped out by the place. Often I was the only person in there, and I believe that 3 out of the 5 times I went, the owner had her friends or family members visiting, which made me feel more like I was interrupting a family reunion than relaxing at a spa. Once, the owner and several men (family members, I assume, not spa patrons) were all sitting in a dark room speaking in another language, and I was the only one in there. Just made me feel a little strange as I'm taking off my clothes to get in the tanning bed (in a room without a lock) right next to them. Also, once when I was there, they gave me a flier that was purportedly an excerpt from a magazine, where the author had conducted an unannounced, "undercover" review of the place after having a facial. On this basis, I got a facial. It was not nearly as good as this "undercover" reviewer, which led me to think that maybe the flier was not from a magazine as they claimed. For my facial, the woman treating me left the room for quite a long time. (The "undercover" reviewer, who got the same facial, said that a) the treatment person didn't leave the room and b) instead gave you a massage while you were laying there.) I would ignore these problems and go back to tan there, except I just have a strange feeling when I'm at this place.
Pros: convenient location, decor
Cons: ambience, high-pressure sales, facials
I made an appointment at Spa Ja for polarity therapy one day after a long week and it was the best thing I could have done for myself. The minute I walked in the owners were taking care of me, making sure I could unwind with some tea and treats before having my massage. Then I met Alexandra who was this amazing bundle of kindness. She literally could read my energy - and me - like a book! The massage was almost deep tissue but not so much that it was uncomfortable, just thoroughly therapeutic and relaxing. I will definitely be back soon!
I am a regular at this spa--I cannot get enough! Veronica does an amazing job of eyelash extensions--very professional, very fast. I will keep coming back!
I love Spa Ja!!! The atmosphere is so relaxing, the staff is great, the owner is always around making sure everyone is happy.
I used to be skeptical then I started doing a cellulite treatment with Lides and really saw results! I lost measurements! It is amazing!
Now that I am pregnant Lides makes sure I don't retain too much water and treats my circulation. All the products are organic, so it's ok even if you are pregnant!
LIDES is the BEST masseuse I have ever met in my life! You will see results!
I've been to Spa Ja countless times and am always happy. They aim to please. Iza is fabulous for facial and Flor for bikini waxing. The brazilian manicures are a nice treat .... but a little overpriced -- nice gift, but I wouldn't pay for it myself! What's also amazing is that you can just call same day for an appt and surprisingly there's always something. Also, they have great hours. I believe they are usually open until 9pm!
Pros: great ambience, client focused, relaxing
Cons: overpriced manicures and pedicures
I recently visited Spa Ja and was very impressed. The staff and owners are extremely friendly and accomidating. The environment is also very relaxing from the waiting area to the individual rooms. It is very peaceful and serene, which is a true find in the city. I felt extremely relaxed afterwards. This spa is very unique and is worth the trip!
Pros: Ambience, great massage, friendly staff
I have been going to Spa Ja about twice a week now for the last 2 months. A little self-indulgent? Maybe, but honestly it has been the key to my sanity in a world where getting a Masters Degree and planning a wedding simultaneously have me a bit crazed. I have been in the care of Alexandra who has taken me to levels of calm I did'nt think exsisted. I originally bought a package of treatments for cellulite reduction but in the hands of Alexandra and her partner Mabel, it has become much more. She does amazing things with wraps and liposage, and I have seen my cellulite almost completely disapear! She also works with energy and has performed Reiki on the days I need it most. Her tender touch and gentle persona are something I look forward too. As equally gentle and welcoming are Giovanna and her staff who are waiting with tea, a warm towel and goodies on arrival. I will be getting married next week and I can honestly say that I am ready, relaxed and cellulite free in large part due to Alexandra, Mabel and the Magic that is Spa Ja.
Pros: Flexible, Friendly, Knowledgable Staff
I have had many many facials and massages in my life both in NYC as well as major cities. I would 100% recommend Spa Ja for the very best services as well as the kindest people out there. I had a wonderful massage and one of the best facials I have ever had. The salon is very clean and has the most current technology with state of the art equipment and all natural and organic products. The owner, Giovanna, is one of the nicest, kindest souls I have ever had the opportunity to meet. It would be worth your trip to this salon and if I live in NYC I would be going there every week!
I was pleasantly surprised upon my first visit & continue to be conistently happy with the services, products, and all of the perks offered by the truly caring owners of Spa Ja, Giovanna & James, along with their wonderful, top notch staff.
The equipment is state of the art, the rooms quite relaxing, the products all organic, & they greet you with the most delicious herbal tea with fresh berries (iced or non, made to your liking).
The prices are reasonable, especially for Manhattan.
I must admit that I was not looking forward to my Brazilian wax, as I'd had 3 far from pleasant experiences at J Sisters (I found the 57th street location to be filthy, and had irritation after each wax, plus the employees at J Sis do not wear gloves, for a Brazilian! Which according to my Gyno, is not healthy.
Spa Ja on the other hand,(gloved hand ... I might mention) is terrific!
No irritation, quick ,& it costs less than J Sis!
Apparently all spa ja staffers give a great wax, as a friend of mine stopped by without an appt & had the best pain/ irriation-free wax of her life,) Alla (whom I've not tried) did the honors.
I personally recommend Irani, (pron. Eerahnee)!
She's incredibly talented ... (not to mention personable and makes you feel quite comfortable) ...
Irani gives an amazzzzzing massage. Specifically I'm doing a series of the lymphatic drainage/cellulite -lypo massage. And, yes, I have truly seen results.
Giovanna is a wealth of wisdom, (she's been through her own health ordeals) and truly cares about what goes into one's system ... thus the 1st rate organic products. Don't hesitate to ask her for advice.
It's a superb spa ... I can't wait to try a facial in the near future.
Additionally, I've sent several people to Spa Ja, and all have been ... like myself ... surprised to find such a treasure trove of organic services & products served up by such a talented & caring staff ... all in midtown Manhattan.
Pros: Staff, Products, Equipment, Boutique, Extras, Location
I booked at Spa Ja to get prepared for my wedding ceremony. Once I passed the door I was overwhelmed by the relaxing atmosphere, the whole staff really took care of everything, pedicure, manicure, massage, make-up, everything. I couldn't have chosen a better place ! I really recommend Spa Ja for the professionalism of its staff, the way everyone takes care of you, thank you Giovanna and. James for your kindness and your personalised advice, you really contributred to a wonderful exquisite day.
Pros: Professionalism and kindness
We have been going to Spa Ja for nearly two years now and can not think of any other place to go, be it for a massage, a tan or skin treatment. Giovanna and James are truly wonderful and their staff so attentive to our needs. Enter Spa Ja and immediately enjoy the relaxing, Zen atmosphere that will lead you through a true, natural body and mind care. We're seduced and can only strongly recommend the experience, Bravo !
Pros: Professionalism, Quality of the (natural) products, relaxing atmosphere
Love this place, Veronica does the best lashes and is a sweetheart! Book in advance, she is very popular and lashes take about 1-1/2 hours depending what result you want.
I discovered Spa Ja recently after trying a few disappointing facial places. Love this place! My face was glowing for days after I got the facial. I?m really picky with products and method used on facials and I was really happy with the whole experience at Spa Ja. Eka, who analyzed and recommended the Brazilian Facial, did such an amazing job making me feel so relaxed afterwards. Anyway I can?t say enough good things about this place and I?ve been recommending it to all my friends!!
It is apparent you can not offer constructive criticism without this business "attacking" your honesty. I had my eyelashes done, they lasted less than two weeks. Also, you come in for one service and you're given the hard sell on another. I know they are trying to increase their clientel, but who needs the pressure. Clearly not the place for me.
Spa Ja is an oasis of luxury and I look forward to each time I come. I come here to re-energize and to promote holistic balance in my life. The Owners, Giovanna and James, dedicate their lives to making it a peaceful retreat for their patrons. They are always gracious and professional and personally invested in the experience of each and every customer. The therapists also take great pride in their jobs and work very hard to provide an over-the top session. The spa offers opulent courtesies when you are waiting for your treatment, such as hot aromatherapy face towels and tea made from chunks of real strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and mint, and the occasional beautiful spread of appetizers. The decor is sophisticated, chic and global, as are the hosts. The amenities are always meticulously clean.
I am receiving the Brazilian Body Sculpting treatment and have lost two pants sizes and am much smoother, firmer and less bloated. It has been a surprise to me to learn just how much water a woman's body retains, and Spa Ja has helped to educate me in the importance of hydration, diet and sodium control. The Spa hooked me up with Dr. Ping, a Chinese MD who makes ?Ja calls?, who introduced me to an herbal homeopathic supplement called ?Nefelli?, which has super-boosted my immune system and tremendously helped fight cronic fatigue. The treatments, diet and supplements have gone a long way in forging a new lifestyle, and have helped give me the energy I need to get through the vigorous demands my week commands.
Everyone needs to recharge and I'd recommend any service they provide.
Cons: Whats not to love about looking fabulous
