magnolia has promise, but ultimately fails as a record store in every way. its location is great. its close enough to campus, which should allow for a decent used selection given that undergrads will always need beer money, but they seem to buy basically everything. either i only wind up going when they've recently been picked over or else the staff's taste isn't the greatest. i don't necessarily expect to be greeted warmly at an indie record store, but i also don't expect to be treated like dirt. the staff has either been downright argumentative and rude when i've been there, or else they've treated me like they couldn't get me out the door fast enough. last time (which WILL BE the last time) i shopped there, one of the clerks was spouting off like a three year old about a shipment of posters she disapproved of, and it distracted the clerk that worked the register to the point that he gave me the wrong change. when i told him the denomination i gave him, he looked at me as if i was trying to pull a scam, didn't apologize, and begrudgingly corrected his mistake. i wish someone who cared at least one iota about music and didn't suck at life would move in and take over the place, but until then, i'll keep shopping at used kids and spoonful.

Terrific old school punk blaring out the soundsystem, hundreds of cool shirts, and even a metal section in the back. I hope they're able to stick around, 'cause there are not many left like this one.

I recently moved to Columbus and desperately wanted to support a local independent music store, and at first this looked like the place. There's a good selection, lots of t-shirts, and for the headbangers, a special metal section in the back. It's just too bad that almost everyone working is full of attitude. I've been in ther about 10 times (purshasing something almost everytime), and the staff has made eye contact with me once. The last straw was when I asked for help finding an import from the UK and was told to just order it on Amazon. It's difficult to suppor that type store. it was nice knowing you, looks like you had a great ride...maybe everyone's just in a bad mood because they know the end is near for their industry. Then again, up the street is Used Kids--go there and your faith in music-o-philes will be restored.

Pros: Large selection of hard-to find discs, especially metal

Cons: Old-fashioned alt-record store bad attitude

I spent a good amount of my college money here buying some really great albums. They are really knowledgeable and can help you find anything here. They have a lot of the hard to find and rare stuff collectors love. Just an all around great little record shop. The atmosphere of the store is cool too.

Several times in the past few years I've wanted to find music that is difficult to come by. I know I could order it online, but I'm an instant gratification kind of person, so this store rocks for me. So far they've not let me down.

Last time Death Cab for Cutie released an exclusive EP that are only avaliable in certains stores in US and online. Lucky for the Magnolia Thunderpussy Records, I was able to buy one. Also, this is an ideal place to shop if you're interesting in discovering new artists or find certain albums by artist you wont ble able to find in traditional record stores like Sam Goodies or such.

Located extremely close to the Ohio State University it is targeted towards the college crowd. They carry a lot of obscure and hard to find music that you couldn't find in most other mainstream music store. The prices are fairly decent.
