I have ordered several cakes from there for various events. I have always been greeted with a warm reception, big smile and a willingness to modify my order to meet my needs. The prices are fair, the cakes are wonderful and the service is great.

Wonderful cakes, wonderful people

Paul and Marcia are some of the most hard-working generous folks in the business. The cakes are divine, and exquisitely beautiful. I recently needed a wedding cake THE NEXT DAY for friends whose very ill daughter and her fiance decided to get married (11th hour for obvious reasons). I phoned Masse's in the midst of their hectic Saturday. They had the kindness to say yes, and I wonder how late into the night Paul worked to make this happen. A two-tiered passion fruit masterpiece, wrapped in white chocolate, decorated with perfectly placed roses. And I think the prices are a bargain given the top-of-the-line quality.

I guess sometimes they are so busy they might give the impression of curtness (I personally have NEVER experienced this). But if you want a dessert baked with heart that will knock your guests socks off, this is the place!

So rude!

I just had the most perplexing phone conversation with the owner of this place. She was so rude!! All I wanted to do was to order a cake for my son's 1st birthday. Mind you, I love this place: we had our wedding cake made by them several years ago; my daughter's 1st birthday cake was also from there... So, all I asked was whether I can see their menu to be able to order over the phone (because I work full time in the city and have two young kids and can't come in to order). So instead of spending a second to fax the menu to me, the clearly psychotic owner spent 10 minutes telling how she does not have time to put the menu on the website. She also basically insinuated that those of us who work in an office setting have too much free time on our hands to browse websites and order online! I am in the office every day at 6 am and work at least 10 hours a day, so I don't really consider myself an idle type. This was just rude and totally uncalled for! And the really sad thing for me is that I just can't bring myself to ever go back there again!

This place has some of the best pastries (and coffee) that I've ever had. I always try to get cakes for birthdays from them. Parking may be a bit tricky sometimes, but other than that, cute shop and nice vibe.

They have the best chocolate cakes that I've every bought. My neighbor gets it for his birthday every year and I'll sneak over to have some! Their fruity cakes and tarts are also very delicious. However, their service is not especially friendly.

For my 50th birthday my husband said I could order my party cake from anywhere!! So I searched around and chose Masses Pastries on Shattuck in Berkeley. I told them I wanted something sophisticated and special and they said they could do that for me. WOW!!!! This was a creation, not just a cake -- just what I wanted for my special party. It was just fabulous (think Cirque Sole) and that was just the decorations. The flavor and taste of the cake was even better... everyone at my party was oohing and ahhing as they ate this piece of ARTWORK. Some were asking how could I possibly cut and eat something this beautiful. A previous review is correct, this is not a Costco or Safeway cake and is not priced as such either. For a special event, when you want something spectacular, you cannot go wrong with Masses Pastries. They are truly artisians, not just bakers. Tell them JM DREW sent you :)

Their cakes may taste divine, but ??some? of their customers are treated like garbage. We went to Masse??s Pastries on Shattuck in Berkeley to order a cake for our daughter's birthday as they came highly recommended. We knew they were expensive ($$$+++) but didn't mind. Upon entering, Marcia Masse (one of the owners) greeted us by immediately telling us how much their cakes were (wow, what a way to greet a potential customer I thought). Although a little surprised, I rationalized that she probably should let people know this off the bat because, after all, these are not $20 Costco-type cakes they are selling. I assured her that cost was not an issue. She reluctantly gave us their book of photos to look through. When we picked the type of cake we were interested in, instead of graciously inquiring about our selection, she quickly blurted out, "those cakes can go for $350 dollars?, followed by "those types of cakes are very expensive you know". For a second and, now, a third time, I told her money was not an issue in the least. When we began to discuss the potential design of the cake we??d like her to make, instead of taking interest in what I was sharing with her, she AGAIN, told us that the cake we were considering was pricey and that certain decorating would cost "even more". At this point, I was done. I have never been spoken to like this before from someone who, in all honesty, should be welcoming my business (I mean how many people are willing to spend over $350 on a Birthday cake?!) As I was walking out of her shop, she kept saying "Wait, wait?it's not about money, it's not about money ?? it??s just that to go to all this work and expense for a child's cake......" Give me a break. Shouldn't I be making that decision as the customer? I could have purchased 10 of her precious cakes if I so desired. Her demeanor from the moment we walked in was rude and dismissive and she made us feel like we were not welcome in her establishment. Was it because I was dressed in jeans, a sweatshirt and Crocs? Honestly, I felt like Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman when the snooty Rodeo store sales ladies didn't want to help her, despite having the money to buy anything in the store. This is Berkeley for heaven's sake - since when do you need to dress in Chanel to order a cake on Shattuck? Again, their cakes are extraordinary - no doubt; but, sadly, they made me feel as if you need to ??look like you are oozing money? in order to be treated courteously, let alone be ??permitted? to order a cake from them.

Masses Patries is a little bakery that has a great deal to offer. Just outside their front door you get to smell the inviting aroma of freshly baked pastries. Their glass display cases have a large variety of tasty treats like tarts, clairs, tortes, cookies, cakes. Everything is artfully made and delicious. I like to get a morning coffee there and a small treat to go with it.
