Jasmine is owned by Bobby Kornsuwan, well known among Nashville's Thai food aficionados for his connections with the 23-year-old Siam Cafe (owned by his in-laws, the Silpacharn family), then as the proprietor of the short-lived The King and I near Vanderbilt. He opened The Orchid on White Bridge Road in 1994, but a partner dispute led to his departure, so in 1998 he opened Siam Cuisine, also on White Bridge Road, with his in-laws.Chef Bobby Korsuwan and his wife's family, the Silpacharns, have been serving Authentic Thai Cuisine for a long time.

Bobby spent six months at Magnolias restaurant in Franklin, working under Emil LaBrousse, an expert practitioner of haute cuisine Francaise. While there, Kornsuwan kept his eye out for a location; ironically, the Cool Springs branch of The Orchid became available and in 2001 he opend Jasmine.

Entrees are familiar--red curry with basil leaf, hung ray curry, chicken/beef/ pork/seafood with garlic sauce--but they're consistently prepared with fresh ingredients and distinct flavors, and they're beautifully presented--another influence from Kornsuwan's Magnolias stint. In an effort to depart from what he calls the "sameness" of plates in Thai restaurants, each entree is accompanied by a vegetable and rice of the day, though diners can opt for plain steamed rice if they wish.

Fans of Thai food should dig deeper, into the section called Bobby's Specialties. Best bets are Kornsuwan's sparkling executions of Thai salads; the delectable pla pad cha, chunks of fish filet sauted with red curry paste; steamed chicken wrapped in minty pondan leaves; crispy shrimp in hot-sweet chili-tamarind sauce; and gai ob , marinated Cornish hen with sticky rice and spicy pureed mushrooms.
