important and historic

The Dorothy Chandler is part of the Music Center in downtown Los ANgeles. Its the home of the LA Opera and the LA Master Chorale. I have attened lots of concerts there and it is a very nice facility. There is lots of parking, tho it is $8. Patina runs their catering, so the food is superb but it will cost you a small fortune.

Fading, But Still a Star

by Bruce K. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,613

We saw Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music here. I had been to the Dorothy Chandler years ago, but this was my first time in a while. We had cheap seats up top and, my goodness, they are steep! I felt like if I were not very careful I would fall out of the balcony and take out a couple of the fat cats below. Yikes!

If you bring your camera, you'll have to check it downstairs. They have soft drinks and wine at a small stand on the side of the lobby. Otherwise, there is a lively scene outside before the show as people dine in the courtyard at the restaurant. It is not a good place to bring a picnic, so eat beforehand or make reservations.

The place could use a major overhaul, but still retains some of its old glory.

PROS: Still elegant
CONS: Steep cheap seats

Great Education Programs and Performances

by Bj B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,417

This place provides a wonderful service to the community through workshops and classes for education professionals, students and families. They also have wonderful musical performances scheduled on their yearly calendar. I enjoy the multi-cultural and global performance groups and hope that they continue to build this up.
