They have always been kind, courteous, helpful, & knowledgable to me. They are right down the street, a couple blocks. If someone complains about prices, then maybe they should go to a cloned, big$, corporate entity with their $, & get obtain some ill-advised advice from a kid that was flipping burgers yesterday. Your pet is a FAMILY MEMBER ! Skimp on their food, advice, toys, etc. ! Not ME ! I'm grateful that P.J. Petts is in MY neighborhood, staffed by friendly, knowledgable help, instead of IDIOTS ! Some people ONLY have negative commentary. I see you people: spending multitudes of $ DAILY on your SUVs, yet you cry about a measly few dollars for a pet that brings a MULTITUDE of joy, health, happiness, & positivity into everyones lives that loved one enhances ! GET A GRIP !

I, like many people in the Richmond area, was a loyal customer of another Pet store on Broad Street, that went out of business. We were forced to go somewhere else. I had shopped at P J Pett's on occassion but did not like the higher prices they charged, nor did I like that they did not mark the prices of their products or their shelves, so you could do comparison pricing.
I decided to give them another try. Nothing had changed. They still don't mark the prices on their products, so from week to week, you don't know what they may charge for most of their products. Nor do they. If you call and ask for a price, no one seems to know. One person will tell you one thing and another will tell you something else. The same thing happens when you go in and buy a product. The products are not marked so they have to hunt through their paperwork to find a price and it varies depending on who is looking for it. One week I was charged $26.99 for a case of California Natural, Venison and Brown Rice, 13.2 oz. cans and another week I was charged $32.99 for the same product. That is a tremendous difference and I would buy 4 cases at a time. They don't give you an invoice that tells you what you are being charged and for what product. If you pay cash or write a check, you get no receipt at all. If you use a debit card or credit card, all you get is the receipt that you sign that only gives you the total of the purchase, not a break down of what you purchased. If you ask for a receipt that shows any kind of breakdown at all, they will give you the paper receipt that comes off the register. It does not show you what you purchased by item and how much it costs. It shows you how many items of a product you purchased and how much it costs, but not what the product is; hence, you never really know what you are paying from one week to another. Again, the majority of their products do not have any pricing on them nor is there any pricing on the shelves themselves.
This summer, they were one of the retailers who participated in the Natura Frequent Buyer Club promotion. This is a promotion where if you purchase 10 cases of cans or bags of pet food and send in the proof of purchase, you will receive a voucher from Natura to use at the participating retailer you purchased the pet food from originally. This voucher is for a free case or bag of pet food that you originally had purchased. P J Pett's, did not choose to give me the envelope to keep my proof of purchases in, when I bought the food. They chose to keep the envelope themselves. They took the proof of purchases and they put them in the envelope and kept them. They said when I had the 10 proof of purchases, they would fill out the envelope and send them in to Natura. I finally received this week, a reply from Natura. I had purchased the 10 cases in October. P J Pett's neglected to put "who" the retailer was that I had purchased the food from; hence, it was incomplete and no voucher was sent to me. Instead, I received a letter stating the form was incomplete, the rules are very specific, and I must send back the card and the envelope with complete information in order to get the voucher. Now that I had the envelope, I completed the Retailer information and mailed it back to Natura.
I am sure there are many other consumers who have shopped at P J Pett's that have had similiar experiences. They just don't take the time to write a review. Please make sure you check your mail for the voucher you should be getting from Natura because if you miss the deadline of 12/31/2011, you will be out of luck.
In today's world, where there are so many places to purchase your pet food and supplies, why would anyone choose to shop in an establishment that chooses to blatantly rip their customers off? If I receive a voucher back form Natura, I will take it back to P J Pett's for redemption; however, whether they choose to honor it or not is another matter all together.
I am fed up with how P J Pett's treats their customers and will not be spending my hard earned income in their establishment anymore. I have proof of every purchase I made from them and the letter from Natura, if any one else would like to see. I am not a crack pot. I am just tired of being ripped off. Am I the only one?

There are many places in Richmond that sell the exact same brands of premium dog and cat foods without the extreme markup! The toy selection is terrific and highend, but again the prices are pretty steep. The service can be very disappointing as well -- If someone is willing to pay their exhorbitant prices, they should be treated as a VIP!

The store is very well stocked, but most of the food items are not priced at the shelf or on the bag. You are charged at the register, and I had to ask for receipt. The service was o.k. I would not recommend ,since I was charged 45% more than other stores.

I actually LOVE PJ Petts. They have virtually EVERY type of Super Premium, natural, organic, holistic and/or otherwise specialty, non-grocery store chain food and treats imaginable. Their toy selection is tremendous and the staff is knowledgeable (though not terribly warm and fuzzy). So, what's not to like? The prices.

Without question, they are easily the highest prices pet store I have ever been to. A bag of food that is $8.99 at any other specialty retailer is usually at least $4 higher at PJ Petts. Now, as a matter of convenience, I don't mind paying an extra buck, maybe two, but a 40% price increase over their competitors for the same product? Outrageous.

P.J Petts is the ONLY local retailer who carries "Eagle" brand pet food, which is like a gift for us. Our young Lab recently developed intestinal trouble and requires a special food to maintain his internal balance. Thanks to this wonderful shop, I do not have to order our pet food!! I love the variety in this store- of everything from food to bedding to toys.

While P J Pett's in Carytown has the best selection of high-quality dog and cat food/treats around, their prices are out of control. Thankfully P J stocks brands like Innova, California Natural, Wellness, Eagle Pack Holistic, Solid Gold.....but at the worst prices in town. For example, a one-pound bag of Solid Gold lamb jerky sells for less than $10 on Solid Gold's website, while P J marks it up to $16.99! Love the location, love the selection, love the staff...but just can't afford the place.

PROS: Selection; location; friendly staff.
CONS: Prices.
