.

Thornton Waldo Burgess, was a naturalist and conservationist, who loved the wonder of nature and its wildlife. He wrote about them for more than 50 years. He is best known for his Old Mother West Wind Stories which feature Reddy Fox, Peter Rabbit and Bily Mink, among others.

The museum is in a house that was once owned by his Aunt Arabella. The museum exhibits artifacts, art, writings and other personal memorabilia of Burgess.

The grounds are a treat to walk through too! There is a nice herb garden and the kids will surely enjoy a walk to the duck pond to feed the ducks.

Admission is inexpensive.

PROS: Nice history of American author
CONS: can be crowded in summer

The Thornton W Burgess Museum is located at a preserved 18th century house in the center of Sandwich. It celebrates the life of Thornton Burgess. He was the childrens author who wrote the Peter Rabbit stories and he was also a naturalist. Many of his works are displayed here. They also have gardens and nature trails. They have many childrens programs and small children have a lot of fun here. They also have some great nature work shops. We have been to several excellent ones including programs on animals and the night sky. This place is fun and educational for the whole family.

PROS: Gret for all ages, good programs
CONS: Can get expensive
