I got a verbal quote, over the phone from the company in January from one of their arborists. I never received a follow up estimate, so I emailed them in late February to request it to make sure that my notes I had taken in January matched what their estimate said. The amount of the quote was $460.06, my notes said $460. So I scheduled the work. They came out, I spoke briefly to the work crew, went to work. Later on in the afternoon, I receive an invoice for $189.44 more than what the estimate originally said for a total of $649.50!

What?!

When I called the arborist to figure out what happened, she said she had included an extra $175 plus tax for the trim and removal of one of the trunks in the description portion of estimate. Apparently, the total I was quoted reflected only the removal of one of the trunks for $175. Below that was an option of trim and removal of one of the trunks for a total of $350. Keep in mind that this whole option, including the different price is only in the description, not in the cost or total columns of the estimate. So when you look at the itemized description, you have the description of services, then you go across to the cost column with the price for that individual service. Thus, when you read the trim and removal portion in the cost column, it's blank. I argued that the second option wasn't reflected in the total at all, but apparently that didn't matter. I was supposed to look at the description of the services, add that extra $175 in on my own and create my own separate total and change what their actual total said. Because that makes sense right?

She went on saying we had a verbal agreement of how much it was going to cost, she had her notes from our phone call, emails were exchanged regarding whether one of the trunks were going to be removed or if it was going to be removed and trimmed, blah, blah, blah. She even went on to say how she had done this type of quoting with hundreds of clients and had never had an issue. Well, considering that I was supposed to intuitively look at the description with an additional price amount, then add that to the cost column to come up with a different total than what was actually quoted, I'm shocked that other customers have not had this problem before! And, in all email messages exchanged, not once was it discussed that if I wanted to have both services performed on the tree, it would result in $175 more! I mean, isn't it logical and good business practice to include a separate estimate if there are different prices based on different services provided?

Bottom line, is their quote did not match the invoice and it was somehow blamed on me that I agreed to the services provided and I should have done better math on their proposal that they provided to me, which was never even sent to me in the first place. I had to request it!

The actual work was not an issue. I was happy with the work, but their billing practices sorely needs some work.

Update: After discussing and deliberating for four days, the company finally decided that they would waive the additional $175 plus tax.

The company also said that it would review how they write their work proposals so that it would be less confusing in the future, though their software made it difficult for them to do it.

I'm still pretty sure we won't go with them again as the whole process was rather unpleasant for both my husband and I. We've worked with numerous companies, both small and large, and have had to deal with issues before, just like most people. But, the company professionalism when dealing with the owner and the arborist was less than ideal. My husband and I were both rather taken aback as we've never had a company deal with an issue in such a fashion before.

But, in the end the company did offer to acknowledge the confusion in how the work proposal was drafted, and waived the fee. So, if I was asked for a recommendation of this company, I would let you decide for yourself.

Edit: After leaving this review and a couple others, DTS contacted me to try to smooth things over. They did offer a partial refund for the hassle, and seemed genuine about wanting to make things right. I still have my concerns, but their professional handling of the situation after the fact has turned my "never again" to a "maybe."

I wouldn't use Dallas Tree Surgeons again. Though the tree trimming job was what I was looking for, and the price was relatively reasonable, they were disorganized and disappointingly unprofessional.

The crew left trash in my yard, and though the price included clean-up and haul-away, branches were left all over the place. When I let them know, they did send the crew out to clean up again, but they still missed some pretty big branches, which I then had to clean up.

Then I never received an invoice, but a couple weeks later got a collections call from them, complaining they hadn't gotten a payment. When I mentioned I hadn't received an invoice, but would gladly send payment when I did, they argued that they had sent an invoice a couple days after the service was provided. They did agree to "resend" an invoice, and the situation is handled now, but I'll be looking elsewhere next time I need my trees trimmed.

The day after I sent an e-mail I had a call back, a quote and the work done. Very professional and good work. Twice I was asked to review the work. The took all the trimmed materials with them and left me with a nice clean area.

These guys did everything I asked and more. We have some tree removals and tree trimming done and everything looks beautiful. They answer the phones and show up when they say they will. What a change from other contractors Ive dealt with.
