This is a business that I WANT to admire and support, but cannot recommend.

On the upside, Thuyn is a fascinating guy. Friendly, kind and knowledgeable. And there IS the chance to see reptiles you would NEVER see at Petsmart. Upon my latest visit (2-21-2011), the store was cleaner than I had ever seen it previously, and rather than "zen" Thuyn, a young woman greeted me. I really appreciated her customer service as well. Communicative and engaging.

But as they say, reality bites. What others describe as a "rain forest scent" is nothing of the sort. The overwhelming odor is that of ammonia, NOT the healthy, earthy smell of forests, tropical or otherwise. I do not claim to be an authority on ALL reptiles, but I've kept tortoises for over thirty years, and the condition of every tortoise I have ever seen at Rose City Reptiles would shame me. It doesn't take an expert to recognize puffy, weeping eyes and a total lack of movement or curiosity. They have the look of "recent rescues" from abuse or hoarding. Genuinely sad. It would be great to "save" them, but they are priced 50 to 100% MORE than what you would be charged from a dedicated breeder, or from Tropical Hut a few blocks away on SE Division, or a reptile rescue organization. Sadly, I always WORSE after leaving Rose City Reptiles.

It may impress the casual visitor, but it is more like a visit to a "sweet" animal hoarder than it is to a business. Livestock buyers beware!

First off, the 5 panther chameleons housed together for "breeding" purposes is a complete joke. Undersized/aged animals being bred, animals with severe MBD, closed eyes, URI's in most of the enclosures. I would steer clear of this place at all costs.

I have known thuyn for about 8 years hes knows what he is doing the conditions of his shop may be a lil out of the ordinary for a pet shop, but he knows how to care for his reptiles. Just a couple of years ago i had 10 snakes he was always there to give me advise and or free meds for my snakes anyone who gives this shop bad feedback doesn't know what they are talking about. As far as the escaping snakes goes they are natural escape artists anyone who has snakes knows this. Snakes try and try untill they can get away i can't tell you how many times my snakes have escaped. As far as dead decaying animals in this shop goes well you try running a business pretty much on your own your bound to have a couple reptiles die every once in a while. Thuyn is the best reptile guy in oregon he can special order you unbelievably beautifull snakes and has been a fan or maybe just obsessed ever since he was a child so he does love his animals he keeps in his shop.

I posted negative (and accurate) comments in January 2009 after I bought a Cal King from Thuyn. I LOVE the snake he sold me, however, possibly the best snake I've ever owned.

Yesterday I returned to his shop and found not only an impressive collection, but a MUCH cleaner setup.
I was really impressed by his long-term commitment, and his friendly, helpful nature with customers. I liked the store music, too! He's a great guy, and this is a GREAT shop.

We all make mistakes, but Thuyn has shown long-term commitment and quality that earned my trust & respect. His is one of the two best reptile supply stores in the Portland area.

Some of you people are just too cruel. Thuin is NOT ONLY the nicest reptile owner I've met, but he is also the MOST TRUSTING. I watched him leave a 4 ft long ball python with a family to pass around to help another customer with some crickets.

9 months ago, he sold me an albino japanese rat snake. I am so happy with it, that I'm going to ask him to special order an albino rtb. Thefirst time I walked into Thuin's shop I saw 2 red iguanas, a rhino iguana, a frilled dragon, 2 blue tongued skinks, a savannah monitor, baby jackson and veiled chameleons, and many different morphs of corns.

A few months ago, my girlfriends chameleon died. Last weekend we went in and he inquired about her chameleon and bugged her to bring it in to breed. We told him he passed away and he said next time we come in he would give her a special deal for a new one.

Rose City Reptiles is almost better than the zoo when it comes to seeing animals we never thought we'd see. Thuin offers exceptionally great deals and is always willing to help out. I honestly recommend Rose City Reptiles.

P.S. If you smoke tobacco, feel free to go out side with Thuin and bull$h1+ over a good ol' fag.

and I'm terribly sorry that he has received these poor reviews. Lately, (since 3/09) his cages have seemed very well maintained, (albeit small cages) his lizards healthy, and his demeanor extremely friendly. I would agree that maybe he is not the most knowledgeable about snakes, but other than that I completely trust his judgment. I don't know what was going on with him during this period of mistreatment for his animals, but it has improved and I feel good about going there. I have been to probably 50-60 reptile shops/vivariums, and I really like Thuyn and his store. It is small, it is cramped, but he does it because he cares. There is no excuse for the things I am seeing people say in these other reviews, and it does worry me, but I will continue to patronize this establishment.

I dropped by the shop in the hopes of obtaining some White's tree frogs, but I was barely able to spend more than a few minutes inside, due to the smell. I noticed that several of the turtles and tortoises appeared to be eating food that was several days old. I would honestly have a problem buying from this establishment due to the poor hygiene and risk of disease. When I left the shop, I was literally gagging from the odor.

Back in November, I went to Thuyn's shop seeking a California Kingsnake. I found one, but it regurgitated its prior meal while I was handling it. Looking otherwise healthy, I decided to buy it. Back home, it has not eaten in over 2 months.

I went back to seek advice about lack of feeding, but Thuyn seemed very disinterested, often taking phone calls or speaking to other clients while I still had questions.

A few days ago, the snake defecated strange-looking feces. I took it and the fecal samples to Thuyn, who summarily announced that the snake has parasites, but he didn't know which kind. He then threw away the fecal samples! He told me to wait until the snake was eating, then to come back to get Panacur for deworming.

I recovered the fecal samples from his garbage and took them and the snake to a veterinary. Examination of the snake, and laboratory examination of feces, determined that the snake is free from parasites.

When I called him today with the good news - that I had spent $101 to verify the health of the $60 snake he sold me, and that it does not have parasites, Thuyn sounded like he didn't want to hear from me again, and made an excuse to leave the phone quickly!

Thuyn is much less knowledgeable about snakes than many people think he is. He falsely believed that coastal phase kingsnakes start out black & white, and then lighten over time. He also wrote down the wrong scientific name for my snake when he prepared the receipt (he made me ask for one).

I worked next to this store for about a year.
He regularly had to warn the facility of dementia patients next door that his animals were escaping (to die).
The guy was nice, and always offered to have customers bring in pets for a check up. Its just that he just doesn't really care for the animals in his store like he should, or keep track of them. I think that is a bit inhumane, so I wouldn't recommend going there.

I have been to this store several times and alot of the animals seem in bad condition. I recently went there and there was dead gecko sitting in the cage that must of been there for days because it was half way decomposed, also the owner warned us that there was very venomous centipede loose somewhere in the store. The owner is very nice and knowledgeable but needs to spend more time on animal care. Alot of the cages were dirty with some having dead rotten pinkies that the snakes didn't eat in them. There are alot of really awesome reptiles there, but they need more attention.

Our Family has an iguanna and a red ear slider turtle. Before we found this pet store we had to get many of their care items though mail order. Some of the larger pet retailers are getting larger inventories of reptile equipment and supplies, but they still don't adaquately fill the needs of most pet enthusists. Rose city Reptiles is a great little store. The owner has offered to do well reptile checks to make sure our reptiles are healthy and getting the care they need. He steered me to a new diet for my iguanna and told me how to help her transition. In additon to wonderful and knowledgable service, they also carry a large variety of amphibians for purchase. My son likes to go with me just to see all the criiters. Also visit the fish store right next door. Although we don't do fish, I have been amazed to just walk through the store andd see all the varieties they have.
