Be careful unless you've just got extra money to spend. I took a recently aquired 82 928 in to have the oil and transmission fluid changed. I also wanted him to check it over and see if there were any issues I should be worried about. He drove it, put some brake fluid in it, and called me telling me the timing belt was about to fall off the pulley. He said he would be scared to drive it home 2 miles. I picked it up, paid him $92.81, $89.95 labor and 2.68 parts. Here is a quote from the invoice.

"Test drive. Check spark plug, distributor cap and rotor. Add hydraulic fluid to determine if clutch operation is imporved (no fluid in reservoir). Open clutch slave cylinder bleeder valve to check for air in system-no air, but VERY DIRTY FLUID IN HYDRAULIC LINE AND SLAVE CYLINDER. R&R one intake tube to acess inspection hole in top right belt cover. *******TIMING BELT RIDING ON FRONT EDGE OF CAM GEAR************DO NOT START ENGINE OR DRIVE. IF BELT SLIPS OFF THE CAM GEAR OR JUMPS A TOOTH, CASTROPHIC ENGINE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR!!!***********"

"Recommendations: 3/13/08 ********DO NOT START ENGINE OR DRIVE UNTIL TIMING BELT, ROLLERS, AND WATER PUMP ARE REPLACED. R&R BELT TENSIONER, DISASSEMBLE, CLEAN AND SERVICE, AND REASSEMBLE. IF TIMING BELT SLIPS OFF CAM GEARS OR CRANKSHAFT GEAR OR JUMPS A TOOTH, CATASTROPHIC ENGINE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR!!!!**********"

His estimate to replace the timing belt and water pump was $1600 which is high.

I drove it home against his recommendation. It took me 5 minutes to pop the edge of the cover off to see more of the belt and gear. The belt was completely on the gear. It took me 10 minutes to take 1 bolt off and pull the cover completely out of the way to inspect.

I went back and told him I felt he owed me at least a partial refund and he refused.

Also, on an 82 16 valve engine, belt breakage or slippage will NOT cause catastrophic engine failure..
