I shouldve read the reviews first! I bought a Groupon for this salon and I got there on time for my appointment. Nobody greets you, they dont mind you...I was told the the stylist would be with me shortly and that turned into 30 minutes. I decided to leave and then I found out the stylist never knew I was waiting for her. I wouldnt go back simply because they are careless about their potencial clients. They called and offer me a complementary cut but I really dont feel like going back. So I dont recommend this place at all.

I referred two friends to them and have not get any penny back. I had my last appointment on Friday and they acknowledge my referrals they still said that they could not give me the credit for system issues.\r
They mislead their clients

Run as fast as you can away from Dearinger. The worst service I have ever experienced. The staff is not talented and rude. They do not care about the quality of their work and there is no accountability. If you do not like it they do not care. So again I say if you like your hair run as fast as you can away from Dearinger;

I went to Dearinger for the first time last week and I had the most incredible color ever. Natalie did my color job and it was fantastic. I used another salon for years and always thought I was stuck with a "so so" head of hair. Natalie wowed me and though I never leave reviews online I had to in this case to say how happy I was. I feel great, I look great and I cant wait to go back. Laura did my haircut and she did a great job too but the color was awesome!!! Thanks Natalie! If you want the best colorist in San Diego, ask for her. Thank me later...

first of all i dont typically write reviews online about the places i receive services from, however, this time i wanted other people to know that Dearinger does not live up to all the hype. i was a customer of Dearinger for over a year and referred many new customers to them - which i regret now. Krystal the salon manager is completely unprofessional and did nothing to address my concerns after receiving a less than satisfactory highlight. She clearly does not care about client retention. I dont know why i kept going back to the salon, probably the convenience of location, but every time i left i was upset with my services and more upset for swallowing a huge bill on top of receiving services I was not happy with. They schedule appointments basically on top of one another so you might have your hair washed by one person then your hair brushed by another then cut by another and dried by another. All in all that makes for a very impersonal experience - more like a car on an assembly line just waiting for the next worker to attend to me. So not only was my colorist overbooked and never on time they left during my service to consult on another client - very, very unprofessional. This is the usual routine for this salon - clearly Mark Dearinger is not concerned with quality and building true client relations rather pushing as many people through the salon as possible and spitting them out just as fast. Not to mention every time someone washed my hair, who was never the person who had colored my hair, washed it so hard it became so insanely tangled it took the hair brusher like 40 minutes just to detangle the mess they had created. And most importantly the salon services i had done were not that great - i was never satisfied and left just feeling angery. Not to mention every time i went to salon i spent 3+ hours there, which is just too long. With all the overlap in booking i spent a great deal of the time waiting for the next "assembly worker" to address my hair. So instead of feeling good about my hair i was just ready to heck out of the salon (it usually was not until i was home that i realized i was also unhappy about my hair). On top of that the salon workers are constantly throwing new magazines on your lap - which have other people cut hair in the margins like they had swept the floor with them - absolutely disgusting. And on top of the poor service the stylist are constantly trying to get you to buy products from the salon. It was really distracting and made the situation awkward. Most people have a hard time spending 50 more dollars on some fancy shampoo after spending 150 dollars for a less than par salon service. I am all about giving people a second or even third chance to make things right but Dearinger does not seem too concerned with keeping loyal clients. This is amplified by the salon manager Krystal's unwillingness to address customer's concerns.

Pros: none

Cons: let me list them

I had an awful experience at Dearinger. I thought it would be fun as it is in a great area of town and supposedly has a good name. I went to Orange Salon & Spa, a local salon in Encinitas and had a girl named Lisa fix it. She wouldn't comment on another stylists hair cut but her face said it all.

Pros: Orange Salon is way way better

Cons: Dearinger was very rude to me

I have been going to Vidal Sassoon salons since 1985. I was a hair model for Vidal Sassoon in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. By being a model for them, I saw firsthand the rigorous training they get for 1-2 years before they are allowed to be called stylists. "Every" time anyone else cut my hair I cringed at the bad technique and poor outcome.

Then we moved to San Diego, which doesn't have a Vidal Sassoon.

One day I was at Nordstrom and saw a woman with a perfectly-executed
haircut. The shape was perfect. The cutting was precise. I
stopped her and asked who cut her hair. She said, "Mitsu at Dearinger. He's a level 1." I was so excited!

Still, I've been burned before, so I needed a guinea
pig. With the family photos coming up, and not having had a haircut
for my daughter in months, I splurged on a $40 haircut for a child.

So I took my 4-year-old to Dearinger, sat down and watched
my daughter's haircut. Mitsu was amazing. He listened. He took tiny
sections. He cut off the teeniest bits of hair at a time. He created
a style that worked great for my daughter's fine, wavy hair. He told us
how to maintain it. Her haircut looks great. All the time. Without styling.

Then I made an appointment for Mitsu to cut my hair. He listened. He took tiny
sections and cut teeeny amounts all over my head. When he got to
the back area, he pointed out my weak hairline in back and explained
the options for having a nice result in spite of it, and asked me if I
wanted it messy or neat. I told him
to do whatever he thought, because by now I trusted him. I love the
cut. I have gotten so many compliments.

My mom always looked forward to getting her hair cut at Vidal Sassoon when she visited me . This time, she went to Dearinger. She won't stop talking
about how great her cut is.

So, we're all three better-groomed and happy. Give Dearinger a call. Tell them Eliana sent you.

Very friendly staff. I was offered water, tea and some very classy magazines. My appointment ran on time and I was very pleased with my cut and will schedule a color appointment on my next visit. I truly recommend this Salon.

This place is horrible. The staff is rude, untrained and unprofessional. My conditioning treatment consisted of a small application of generic conditioner followed by time under a hair dryer while my "sylist" quickly cut another clients hair. During my cut, the guy cutting my hair accidently dropped his comb on the floor and then proceeded to use it on my head without sterilizing it or even rinsing it with water. He was insulting the assistans during my appointment. So obvious that these people have no formal training - they literally butcher your hair! NOT an Aveda salon - they have the products on display but none are used whatsoever. STAY AWAY! I can't stress enough how bad this place is.
This is so so sad. the workers are writing all the positive reviews.
I meant to go to other salon and I just got confused by the similar names, when I asked for Dario they said he was in vacations, this is unbelievably sad they lay to me also...

OK. so i went to Dearinger without knowing there are so many bad reviews about this place. My friend recommeded David at the Downtown location and i have to say, he did a really great job. I have a very fine hair and wanted blonde highlights and he did exactly what i wanted using three shades of blonde. I recently moved from NYC and he did as good of a job as my NYC colorist, if not better. The fact that they were pushing their products didnt bother me too much but i can see how it can get on some people's nerves. At the end of the day, each stylists gets a percentage from the retail sale and all we have to do is to say 'no' if we dont want it. they are just trying to do their job....

Natalie is my Colorist and Dan my Stylist. They are outstanding. I have had my hair cut by the best of salons for years. I have been with Dearinger as a client for 8 months. I will never leave. I am not one who expects to be made over or pampered, so maybe the people complaining expected more than the exceptional professionalism that I have experienced. I find the price reasonable for every outcome. The products they carry are the best I have ever used. I am thrilled to have such an outstanding salon to go to in La Jolla.I can't believe anyone would complain unless they just have personal issues they need to address that have nothing to do with a hair salon. I have never seen a bad color or haircut leave the place. Please try them. You will be thrilled!

I was very disappointed after visiting Dearinger this morning - I'm new to the area and am looking for an excellent stylist...after doing some research online, I came up with three salons; Dearinger, Jet Rhys and David Perez. I set up consult appts at each salon to see which might be the best fit for me. This morning I showed up for my consultation, checked in and then waited for about 5 mins before the receptionist came over to me asking if I could come back two hours later as the stylist was behind schedule...I couldn't believe it, not just a wait of 15-20 mins, but two hours! Even if I wanted to return later, I couldn't as I had a previous engagement. I didn't feel like the people there were overly concerned or particularly sorry/apologetic, they didn't even offer any other suggestions or try to work with me. I walked out and won't return. Perhaps this sounds a bit harsh, but I don't want to patronize a place that pulls this kind of stunt - certainly not good business practice or customer service. They may well do fabulous cuts, but I'd rather go to a salon where my business is appreciated, where my time is respected and valued. (By the way, I had excellent consults with David at David Perez Salon and Dani at Jet Rhys.

This salon is very modern, cool architecture. The stylists are very nice and the prices are just okay. The hair styles are very cutting-edge. It's also right next to busy bee, so you can stop by for a bagel after you get a fabulous hair cut/color!
