Update: August 2010 - this review was for Java Kai, which is no longer there.

You can't beat the location... and as far as the Hawaiian decor and atmosphere, you just need to relax and go with the flow.

The key here is knowing what (and what not) to order to suit your preferences. If ordered without special instructions, most of the drinks are on the sweet side (which is NOT my personal preference). So..when I order one of my favorites --- a mocha anu, I ask for 1/2 if not 1/3 powder and it is much better. One of the best hot drinks is the Shark Bite, which you don't have to give them any special instructions for -- as it comes perfect as is. The Wiki Wiki Jolt (called a Red Eye at most other places) is another good way to experience their fresh coffee. With other hot drinks -- if they call for syrup of any kind and you're trying to not be 'sweetened out', just ask them to go easy (or not at all) on the syrup.

They make excellent espresso ice cream shakes and smoothies as well. (Most tart smoothie, in case you're wondering, is the Wild Wahine). And again, if you express your desire to have your drink order customized in any fashion, the always very friendly and bubbly staff will happily comply to your wishes. They offer varied choices of ice cream as well that I've seen many kids and kids at heart enjoy.

I have wondered why they don't alter their basic recipes a little so that it wouldn't take special requests to 'unsweeten' things as much, especially in light of other comments I've read, but there must be lots of fans of their drinks exactly as they make them as well.

I'm not sure I'd choose this spot to eat. They usually have a selection of pastries and wraps and salads that seem appetizing enough. I have tried some of the scones (and when they're fresh, they're good) and one of the wraps (which I don't often see in stock) was actually quite nice as well. But I think of this place more as a great place to sit and enjoy the view while sipping a hot or frozen concoction you won't find at Starbucks.

Java Kai is a great coffee spot! They are centrally located in Del Mar and is within walking distance to the beach! They always have different coffee specials and I love all of their iced blended coffees. The staff is very friendly.
