Charter Homes is the most disrespectful and unprofessional company I have ever dealt with! While I love our new house, if I had known the trouble we were about to experience, and are still going through, I would have run the other direction. The biggest problem was over a retaining wall we were told would make our lot "slightly sloping." To achieve this, the wall was going to be around 10 feet tall which is how high our house sits above the street below. After paying over 25K for upgrades, we watched Charter build a 4 foot wall and they thought they were done. We would have walked but we would have lost all the money we had spent in upgrades. We fought for several weeks for a secondary wall to salvage some of the land we were losing which was at least 200 sq feet. After laughing at Charter when they suggested we pay for the secondary wall, we finally compromised severely and got another wall 6 feet in from the one below. We were happy with this until it came crashing down during a large rain storm while we were vacationing... this was after we had been in the home 3 months. Needless to say, getting them to rebuild the wall was no fun either as they moved at a snail's pace. Keep in mind this happened in December and Charter thought they were going to wait until things dried out in the spring to rebuild the wall. Right before we closed, they renigged on an adorable railing on the front porch that made the whole house. After fighting and reminding them it was in their spec house, we got that.

Charter has this fun thing they are famous for when they tell you at about 4:45 on a Friday night that they're going to be doing something incredibly disruptive to your property and then they start the process at 8 am on Monday. Twice now, I've had the sidewalk in front of my driveway ripped out with out being told about it. Then there was the time I had to reschedule a delivery because they decided to repave the street with out telling anyone. Of course there were no accommodations or suggestions as to where we were to park for the 48-72 hours as the pavement cured.

The best part! A few weeks after moving in, my 1-year-old daughter and I got locked in the master bedroom, with out a phone I might add, because the doorknob was defective. I had mentioned this on the walk-thru but it got no attention. I was in there for over an hour as my 3-year-old had free reign over the house. It wasn't until my Dad arrived, figured out something was wrong and had the super climb a ladder into my bedroom to work for another 10 minutes to open the door. We were told to tape the rest of our doorknobs open so it wouldn't happen again... well, it did. Once more to me when the tape came lose and also to my neighbor. I finally took it upon myself to remove all the door knobs which is something Charter should have done.

I grew quite fond of the super on the property as he became our new roommate after moving in. For 2 weeks, Charter worked to complete obvious errors and problems that should have been fixed prior to closing.

The customer service agent is never told about the major disruptions and problems until the homeowners bring it to her attention. Honestly, if I were here, I would have jumped ship a long time ago.

From being lied to, made fun of on myspace by one of their employees, and treated like total dirt, I definitely do NOT recommend this builder.
