Mayfair John Young Pet Hosp is the WORST!

by analia g.

this vet, is the worst! i took my rottie there last year the service was horrible my rottie was in so much pain she could'nt walk and she wasn't eating the doctor came in for 5 minutes look at her and said she was dehidrated told me to give her lots of liquid and sent me home, i went for a second opinion to boggy creek animal hospital where they did some test and found that she had cancer in her uterus it was so bad that even surgery wouldn't have save her, we had to put her to sleep after she was with me for 12 years, i called mayfair right away to tell them to be more compassionate with other patients and at least do their job! not give a diagnostic just by looking at the animal, the only thing i got from that call was to be hung up in the middle of it. if u can don't take ur loved one there you might lose ur pet trying to save a couple of dollars.

Not Caring At All - UPDATED AT BOTTOM

by Lorraine M.

I took my dogs there in August for their shots and had no problems, but then again I didn't need to see a vet for that either.
On Wed my rottie started vomiting and coughing. Yesterday she didn't eat at all, slept all day, still coughed and hardly went to the bathroom. I took her in today and was not happy. The doctor came in, put his stethescope on her chest for maybe 2 seconds, grabbed her belly and told the tech to run blood and urine.
The tech tried 5 times to get a vein when I finally asked him to get someone else to do it. The other guy got it on the first shot. I take the dog outside to get the urine and I see the vet leaving. When I ask them, they say he has to go to another location, but they'll call him with the results. I was livid. What vet leaves in the middle of an appointment. I could understand if the results took days, but it took 10 minutes.
So I wanted the results and didn't want to have to go back so I waited for them. The nurse calls him and he comes back with she's anemic and wants her to get vitamin shots. Well ok she's anemic, but what about the cough that I went there for? No idea, basically if it continues to come back. It's not like I could talk to the vet cause he's gone.
The vet tech says that her immune system is probably down from the anemia and probably has a cold. Well that would be great, but what about the other symptoms.
That is not the worst though. I ask them for a copy of her results and when I get home I research the one result that is off the charts. The norm for the ALKP is 23-212, my dog is at 794, WAY WAY WAY off the charts. In combination with her other tests that are off, and they symptoms she's having, it points to liver failure.
So now I have an appointment with the SPCA tomorrow for a second opinion and to get a doctor that cares. If there is something wrong with her, and they find it, they will have he!! to pay with me when I'm done with them.

EDIT: I took my dog to SPCA and they did further testing, she has cancer. The doctor at Mayfair let her go w/o anything further, that is neglect and I am filing a complaint with the BBB, Florida Dept of Bus & Prof Regulation, American Vet Med Assoc, American Assoc of Vet State Boards, and Florida Vet Med Assoc. Everyone is going to know he is not doing his job.

if money is an issue mayfair is a good choice

by Jon a.

Some of these reviews surprise me... the vet i s NO DIFFERENT THAN HUMAN PHYSICIAN... i have two dogs and took them both they were extremely busy and missed some details, but they were VERY VERY nice and the doctor knew what he was talking about... i suspect they may give shots/meds your animal doesnt need but it may also be thatthe dr is a great vet and bing bang boom handles you quickly wout drama, i enjoyed all three of my experiences there... in the end this is not some small town vet who makes house calls, this is a quick get what you need place without everyone acting like you have the cutest dog in the world, but overall you get good care at a good price...

Mayfair John Young Pet Hosp is good for me and my pets

by Cari B.

I have been going to Mayfair for years with all of my animals. Cats, dogs, rabbits. They are the best and very attentive. The cost if the best part for my budget! I even had my mom switch from Boggy Creek to Mayfair and she loves them as well. I do agree that sometimes their staff seems less knowledgeable about certain things but all in all.. I think they are wonderful!

Love this vet

by pattie r.

They have been wonderful since day one- no its not a pretty office but it's affordable-our cat has had all shots-declawed and neutered there. He got sick and had to take him in this am--the vet himself stated that he could do lab work for 105.00 dollars but stated he hated to see people spend their money on something that may not be needed-so he treated our cat and did tell us that he would do blood work the next day if cat did not improve. Staff is busy but polite and the girls always remember our cats name.

I couldn't believe it...

by Paul P.

This place has to be kidding me!!! It is such a joke to put up with such limited knowledge of this place. I remember the first time I went I was almost choking my dog to death to fill out paperwork. Could you at least get us in a room first? I had been satisfied until I met Dr Adkins!!! We at the minimum did not click. It is nuts to think I was paying for an office no matter how small for him to flip my dogs ears from side to side and not even look in them?? The next incident was a month or so ago, we took Spankee to them to find out why his nodules were swelling. Infection was the first thought and the only mention of anything. We waited a week or so to see if the antibiotic was going to get rid of the infection and the nodules to reduce. Neither of these things happened and when I came to find my poor dog standing the hall way shaking without being able to move a step. I decided right then and there I needed a second opinion. This story has a horrible ending and not for the weak at heart. Spankee was diagnosed with Lymphoma and it had spread to all organs and the nodule had swollen to almost blocking his airway. It was the saddest thing I had ever seen. To my horror I had to have him laid to rest on 4/1/09 and have had resentment from Dr Adkins not acknowleding that lymphoma could have been a concern from the start. The man does not take the time it takes to properly summize any problem. I have told all of my friends/family and co-workers to not go near here. You get what you pay for is the truth. My dogs health is not for sale.

Economic Vet Service

by Patricia S.

I have used this vet for 2 years, and have been very pleased with the inexpensive services offered. I've had 3 cats spayed/neutered and shots 6 times Every time I was always surprised the bill was less than expected. It is not a classy place but it's clean. If you want a lot of hand holding go to the pricier vets and they'll hold your hand a charge you to do it too.

Still Love it after 3yrs.

by Shannon S.

We have been taking our pets here for over 3 years now, at least 20 different visits. We are very satisfied, have never seen dog feces anywhere inside or outside, especially the sidewalk !!! Maybe that person who experienced that came on a really bad day !!! It's a low cost clinic, with first rate care. The staff has never been rude to us, nor the Vet. If you're looking for a pretty office, stay away, this is not their top priority. Their priority is affordable, quality care for your pet, and that's what we've received everytime.

Cattle Calls

by Tania G.

Horrible service. Went today to get only parvo and bordatella shots. I was very specific when I made my appointment that my dog did not need rabies. The place is packed, outside area is disgusting, you will find dog poop even on the walkway leading to the door. I offered his records (I had them with me, did not care), I had to ask for a well pet exam. Staff did not even weight my dog, Tech did not hold the dog for the vet, I had to do that. Dr. spent less than 2 minutes with my pet, seldom touched him. Did not administer shots - vet tech did and I had to hold him. When they gave him rabies shot anyway, I questioned the staff, they got rude and nasty. will not EVER, EVER go there again. You are better off with going to a place like Petco or Petsmart than going to this guy.

Male Cat Cages at Mafair Pet Hospital

by B C.

The male cat cages are in a separate location in the kennels near an exhaust fan. The cages are Stainless Steel and are the same size that the Humane Society uses. These cages are large enough for cat's of any size and the cat's have plenty of room to stand. The cages have a stainless steel screen in the bottom of the cage that keeps urine away from the cat's. Sometimes a cat while still under anesthesia will urinate on themselves and it is difficult to bath since they just had surgery. The cat's are always taken good care of, we give them blankets and lots of TLC. Clients are always welcome to inspect the male cat area. Client's are also permitted to bring items from home that will make their animal feel close to them while away from home. Employee B.C.

Helped Us During An Urgent Situation

by Rhonda F.

When our large senior Rottweiler could not walk and we needed to get him into the Vet, they allowed me to borrow their pet stretcher to get him loaded and unloaded from my van. I simply left my credit card with them, took the pet stretcher home, loaded my dog and brought him in to see the Vet. Turned out to be arthritis! Our dog was treated and walked out of the office on his own 4 legs! We have our dog on daily arthritis meds now and he's doing great! Mayfair has reasonable rates and have provided me with 1st rate service everytime I've conducted business with them.

A wonderful pet hospital...

by Alyson L. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,820

Mayfair is an excellent place for veterinary care. Our dogs are treated very well whenever they go there. The staff is welcoming and caring and the vet is both knowledgeable and helpful. Our dogs actually enjoy going to the vet because they know they will be rubbed down and petted by whoever they see. Each dog has also had surgical procedures completed at this pet hospital and the treatment was top notch. The aftercare directions provided were very good and the needed medications were provided. All in all a great location for vet service.

Unprofessional and Unskilled

by Anonymous

Absolutely the worst experience I have ever had! The staff is rude and the doctor is even more rude. I brought my doberman puppy in to have her ears cropped and she was sent home sick, with little instruction, no creams or ointments and with her ear taped down! When I called for help I was talked to like I was a child and told that if I wanted to speak to the vet I needed to make an appointment so that it would be convenient for him, NOT my puppy. It is not in the best interest of your pet to visit this veterinarian.

Good Vet

by Anonymous

I just got home from my visit to Mayfair. They were very polite and friendly and sounded knowledgeable. They were very sweet to my pets and finished my visit in a timely manner. It does get a little packed on Saturday but overall it was a pleasant experience.

What a great vet!

by robyn g.

Pets are a part of the family and here are treated as such. The staff is caring and knowlegable, the prices very reasonable. This is a clean facility with docs who don't order extra tests or meds just to bring in the bucks. They treat both you and your pet with professionalism and understanding, making it less traumatic if you are there for an emergency or just routine shots. We won't go anywhere else!
