I came here for a birthday party last weekend and have to say that this place is awesome. The staff could not have been more accommodating and there was not a single complaint that could have beeen made about the service. From the bartenders to the bussers, everyone at Magnolia Lounge was super attentive and upbeat which only added to my wonderful buzz.

Now while this place is great for groups it is even better for dates, or better yet an after dinner drinks. The intimate and somewhat sexy lounge atmosphere makes it a great place to cozy up, chat, and get a little tipsy with that special someone. So next time you're in Pasadena make sure to give this place a shot and who knows you might even get lucky.

I would also recommend their food since I was able to try a few of their menu items. The coconut shrimp, mac & cheese, and spinach artichoke dip were among my favorites and definitely help sober me up for my drive home.

Love it. Beautiful creative magical (but small!) space with a tree in the center of it all. An narrow outdoor alley made into an tented indoor gorgeous bar with modern seating and vibe. Great place for professionals and over 30 crowd to hang out and not feel you are at a bar surrounded by young kids (nothing wrong with being in your 20's, the best, but nice to not feel generation gaps!). Park behind Ross store and walk 1/4 block. Oh yea, I almost forgot, for some odd reason, this little closet of a kitchen in Magnolia produces the most delicious food! Mac and cheese and salads are all excellent, enjoy!

Hi,
Here is the email I wrote to Magnolia, after my horrible dining experience there. Basically don't waste your money to eat here, just go for drinks.

Hi,
I just wanted to write about my experience I has last night at Magnolia. My boyfriend and I , decided to have some drinks and food at Magnolia, since I remember it being a nice location when I visited it some years ago.
Here is the breakdown of the night and I hope what I say can help in some way.

1. When we first arrived we told one of the waitresses that we wanted to order some food and drinks. After being seated we waited awhile before we had a 2nd waitress approach our table and ask us if we wanted to order drinks. We still hadn't seen a menu at this point, so we asked if we can see a menu. She returned with one menu, my boyfriend and I had to share the menu. Since the lighting is so dim we had to use the light from our cell phones to see the menu. I also had to get up to ask for a second menu. I understand that the dim lighting is used to set a certain ambiance but it made it really difficult for people to see the menus. Also the couple next to us got one menu and than asked us for our menu since they needed a 2nd menu as well. And by the look of it they also had some difficulty reading their menus.

2. After ordering our food and drinks, our waitress brings our bill. It was very awkward, since we had not tasted or drank anything and we already were being charged. I have never been to a restaurant or bar that charges you before you get your drink or food. What if we wanted to order something else, I don't think its wise to close out a customer that is ordering food and drinks. We did want to order more drinks, but were turned off to the idea since we had the bill, looking at us the whole time even before we were served our first drink.

3. I am sorry to say this but the food was atrocious. Our first dish was the coconut shrimp. I understand that its just an appetizer but the shrimp tasted like it came from a frozen bag and sprinkled with some coconut, just so you can charge people $9.
Our 2nd dish was the mac n cheese, which the portion was better than the shrimp, but was bland and really nothing special.
But our 3rd dish was what topped the cake, the turkey burger. If you are going to charge people $11 for a burger, I think its wise to make it look like an $11 burger but also taste like an $11 burger. I know my local burger place can make a better burger. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it, it was the plainest most tasteless burger I have ever seen and ate. Of course we ate all our food, since we were starving but also we wanted make the money we just wasted worth it.

Magnolia has done a great job in the appearance of their business, but I think the same attention needs to be put on your food as well. I hope my review is helpful in some way, I just think your customers deserve their moneys worth.

Pros: Drink Menu & Nice Location

Cons: Bad Food

.

Cute place, nice decor.
But hard to find a place to sit, service takes forever, and not enough heat (BRRR)
A girl dressed up cute will freeze, get tired of standing with her mediocre drink that took forever to get, and leave in a huff with her friends. I did. C YA!!!

Fashioned like a French boudoir, the cozy space is both charming and sultry...even in the daytime. Did you know they're open for lunch?

However, divert your eyes from the surroundings for a just moment...at least long enough to inspect your silverware. Last time I went, the fork was gunky and had food particles stuck to it. Blech.

At least the ambience is good. You can eat lunch in the open air, under a tree in the atrium.

I love the staff and love the ambiance. The manager is great and always accomodates us. I'm always welcomed and the wait staff is always nice. Especially my doll Des. They have GREAT food and the drinks are not watered down. It's definately one of my favorite spots. I just wish they were open this Christmas evening so I could grab a drink. ;) Guess who this is Frank!? -Di

This is a small lounge but cozy to have a group of your friends for a drink..or two! The place has a modern-bohemian vibe to it. It is meld into all the shopping centers on lake. Great wine selection and cocktails. And they offer great appetizer/finger foods that will satisfy your cravings. If you plan to have a big group, you might want to reserve a table (for free!) to save a spot. It's a trendy spot in this part of Pasadena.

Showed up here with reservations on a summer night of 98 degrees and was turned away because one member in my party was wearing shorts. Nowhere on their website or in front of the restaurant does it say that they have a dress code. I can't think of one place in Pasadena that does! It would be a helpful thing to know in advance, don't you think?! I went in to talk with the hostess and was informed that they don't even have a hostess. While I was inside I noticed that everyone in the place was dressed very casually. This is by no means a fancy place, heck, they have mac n cheese on the menu! It was also really cramped and smoky. The bar staff was nice and tried to be helpful but in the end the owner/manager/? turned us away. We ended up going to Briganti in South Pasadena and had a lovely dinner with exceptional service. We will definetely be going to Briganti again but have lost any interest in trying Magnolia.

I do acknowledge the cool ambiance at Magnolia, but I'm not going back.

It happened like this: We eat and drink for a while and pay our $70 bill. Then we decide to have a final beer before leaving. The second bill comes including the stuff we already paid for. Look, we already paid for such and such. I don't understand how the waiter is so confident right away that we didn't pay, and where he gets such guts from. His evidence is the absence of our food plates on the table: Says he never takes the plates before he takes the bill. Our word against the plates... Damn paying with cash! The manager is not better than the waiter. Though he eventually drops the second charges, he ends it up saying "I just hope you're telling the truth." You'd think a manager should be wise enough to not say that. Since he's letting us go, it seems prudent to end it nicely in order to earn future profits? Instead I'm sitting here now badmouthing him.

Wrapping up: Rude waiter empowered by a rude and half-witted manager.

We went here a few weeks ago to meet friends. I have never been treated so rudely by a restaurant establishment. Servers do not acknowledge you. I was given attitude by someone who presented herself as the owner (i found out later that she was not) and i have never left a place with such a sick stomache. I can not recommend this place.

I was at Magnolias last night for karaoke and socializing and had a great time! The place is really small, but beautifully decorated. It was a very unique layout with the large tree in the middle of the bar area. I ordered the Key Lime Pie Drink, one of the signature drinks and it was amazing! I also tried the chicken salad sandwich and it was really good, a friend tried the turkey chili and said it was the best she'd ever had. I went with a very large group and the waiters were very friendly, and very prompt! The karaoke was fun, but a little strange because of the size of he place, it was crowded with a very lively crowd though so it was fun!

We ordered some finger apptizers and they were good. they had a large tree in the middle of the patio bar area whitch added to the ambiance. i would recomend visiting magnolia for a drinks and some appetizers.

This really is more of a bar than a restaurant so it makes for a very trendy, hip type atmosphere. It's not really a place to go to dinner. On their menu page, about 3/4 is taken up with drinks and about 1/4 is their food items. The manager and staff are friendly though.

I've been going to Magnolia on and off since last March. I was there last night for New Years and just can't say enough about how much I enjoy the space. I had a great time and I can't think of a better way to end 2006 and to start 2007. I think they opened in October or November of 2005 and a nice crowd of regulars has developed since that time. I've made some new friends there. The clientele is hot, as are the servers and bartenders. Last night they had a DJ, I think his name is "True". He's also there on Thursdays nights. I love the outdoor bar area complete with an amazing old tree. The bartenders and wait staff are friendly and attentive. The food is awesome.... not your typical bar food menu. And their quality is consistent. They have the best cheeseburger I've ever had. The burger alone is worth a visit. Try a Monday when food is half- price all night. I'm planning to reserve space in July for a birthday party, which is how I discovered Magnolia. They have really cool lounge area that my friend booked for her party. I'll be there next New Eve as well and many times in between. Pasadena really needed a place like Magnolia and the best thing is their location, close to where I live but not in old town.

Thank you Magnolia! I have been Pasadena resident for 10 years and have been waiting for a place like this! It took me a while to find you but it was soooooo worth the wait. A group of us attended your 2006 New Years Eve bash and had a blast! I must say that I was a bit apprehensive because of one of the reviews on Citysearch -- but the service was outstanding and to top it off I met the owners of Magnolia -- ALL FOUR OF THEM and they even rang in the New Year with us...

We got there around 9:30, we had dinner and drinks. The cheeseburger was heaven between two buns...and the mac 'n cheese was like no other. One of my friends ordered the pizza -- hello...how do you say tasty???? There must be magic in the name Magnolia because the Magnolia salad and their signature drink called the Magnolia are soooo good.

My friends and I will be spending many nights at this gem...I question why I am even posting this review -- I want to keep this place all to myself!

I went here with a coworker one weeknight after work, and I must say, it was quite a find! It's very hidden, so make sure you don't pass California if you're going south on Lake.

One of the bartenders there was already a distant acquaintance of mine, and she served us well. The bouncer in the front was also very friendly. I ordered a Hoegaarden (my favorite beer) and was pleasantly surprised to find it on tap. Yummy!

The atmosphere makes me feel like I'm in someone's backyard, as about half of the place is situated outside, even the bar! A tree growing in the middle of the place adds much to the feeling of being in the Hundred Acre Wood, however, you can go inside to hang out at a table with your friends. A big plus is that I can sit near the bar to enjoy my drink and my company and be able to smoke at the same time. Where can you find that in California these days? They also had two monitors where they display movies.

The waitress was very cool and would check up on us from time to time. I'm sorry to hear about the reviewer who mentioned their nightmare with their bill and service. I guess their group-serving policies are severely lacking, but I would tell anyone else to come here with a few friends, (even alone is okay!) but choose not to have their party here.

The women's restroom was a single, which is very nice for modest, private people like myself. It was clean, and nicely decorated. There was a wait for the men's room, which I also assume is another single, so guys, be prepared to hold it a little longer!

The crowd is usually well-dressed and clean, although one guy was thrown out (who had tried to pick up on me earlier, interestingly enough) for being an idiot. Although, striking up a friendly conversation with any of the other patrons was quite easy.

Overall, it's a nice chill place to have a drink and look up at the stars.

This hidden bar/restaurant has great mac-n-cheese and hip decor. They seem to do well with small parties, but not large groups. I used to like this place until I attended a birthday party here of about 12 people. First of all, before even a welcome or an introduction, we were told immediately that there would be a two-drink minimum. This was repeated about 5 times during the night by our server. The second thing she said was, noticing that we had brought a dozen cupcakes or so for the birthday, that there was a $25 cake-cutting fee for the cupcakes! Even though there would be no cutting involved, no plates and silverware, no additional service required.

We said we would talk to the management about the charge, and we did once the bill came (with a $25 fee on top of a $500 bill). The floor manager agreed to reduce it to $10. After some further contention, we talked with the owner, who explained that the charge is not for "cutting", but rather to compensate for the (expensive) dessert orders that he POTENTIALLY lost because of our own dessert. Why not charge customers an extra fee when they decide to go to Baskin Robbins after dinner? Or not order dessert at all?

Don't most restaurants bring out a free dessert anyway to someone having a birthday? It's mere change on the $500 of business that we brought. Potentially repeat business, as we all live nearby!

He reluctantly relented to dropping the charge. He spoke of his generous offer as though he were Mother Theresa.

At the end of the evening, we had about 8 cupcakes left, so we gave them to some of the customers nearby (all of whom were busy just drinking, since it was about 11:30). The owner was so irritated by this (oh no, all those potential dessert orders!) that he called and left a scathing voice mail telling us that we betrayed his generous offer, and we should never return, as we were not welcome there anymore. Thank you, we will not!

Good for cocktail and drinks very small and cozy setting. Gets very croweded in the weekend with a younger crowed.
