By reading others reviews it seems to me that they pick and choose who they want to be kind to. The first time I went was in 2012 and it was a pleasurable experience. I went again this year and the first time the young man was tolerable but still had a slight attitude of I was a bother. I had to wait to purchase the shoes because I had wounded my heels while playing tennis and I needed some consultation. Once my heels were healed I thought it wasn't as nice of a visit to the shoe store as it was in 2012 but I'll try it again because of their website saying they give people a higher level of service and expertise. Well, I didn't experience either of those. I was met by someone that treated me as if I was a bother. I was looking for Tennis shoes and not running shoes and he made it a point to let me know they weren't a store for tennis but for runners. Yet they have 2 pair of tennis shoes there. I wasn't asking him to play tennis with me I was asking for some professional help which I DID NOT GET! I will NEVER return to patronize them... NEVER!!!

I recently visited Ninth Street Active Feet and had a positive experience. As a teenager, I remembered going there with my family while it was on Ninth Street, but its in a new location right around the block. The staff member I worked with was patient, knowledgeable and seemed to go out of his/her way to give me a good selection of shoes. Rather than selecting shoes off the wall by yourself, they watch you walk, measure your foot and bring out a selection of shoes that are appropriate for your foot type. I happen to need a wider width shoe and they are one of the few stores I have found that keep a men's 13 4E in stock. You can also find a smaller selection of Merrell shoes there, but it seems they most have running/walking shoes. You can probably find better pricing online, but I prefer to patronize local businesses when I can.

I have had several less than satisfying experiences at 9 th St. Everything to difficulty with returns to have my son improperly fit. Not only did they recommend the wrong shoe it was the exact opposite of what he needs! Thank goodness for Bull City Running!

Awesome store! Great service, the only local store that carries Xelero running/walking shoes, from Switzerland the finest rocker sole shoe available in the US. The staff is fantastic; friendly & knowledgeable. Highly recommend this store!

Excellent service. Very helpful...no rush and didn't try to sell me anything other than the sneakers I went in for.

I am a nurse and a physical therapist that I work with recommended this store to me in 1987 since I was having feet/knee and hip problems. Wonderful, wonderful service!!! I was allowed to walk in the store and out in the parking lot as much as I wanted on several visits with the shoes at each visit. I took my 77 year old mother in law there and they took the time again to fit her for shoes and suggest several pairs. I have been there several times over the years and am actually going to take my niece there this coming week to get her a good pair of shoes. I believe they hire people who have training in sports medicine/sports training and they also train them well at the store.

I bought a pr of sneakers there and was told to "try them on a treadmill and if they don't work for you bring them back." The person that helped me never mentioned there was $15 restocking fee (ridiculous charge to begin with) before I left. I returned to the store (without touching the shoes) and was told about the fee. I must say that the charge was stated on the receipt and there was an 8"x11" sign at the register that I did not see but it would've been quite helpful if the employee told me. I'm not sure if this fee is standard practice but I was not pleased. I'll stick with online purchases where prices are typically better and shipping is free both ways. Hmmm, how do Iput this. I will NOT be back.

My family and I recently moved to the RTP area because of my job and I found myself in search of a good pair of running shoes. I did my research online, including reading reviews (good and bad) on this site, and decided to go there to get shoes. Upon entering the door, I was greeted and asked if I needed any help so I explained that I was looking for a new pair of running shoes. The guy sat me down, had me do a series of tests and told me that my foot type was overpronated, which I can only guess is what the previous reviewer was referring to. He proceeded to measure my foot and make size recommendations for me which I thought was going to be big at the time. I normally wear a size 11 shoe and the gentleman kindly explained why you should size a running shoe bigger than a casual shoe. He brought out 4 pair of shoes and allowed me to try each one on and take it into the parking lot for a short test run. After testing out all of the shoes, I chose the Brooks Adrenaline 9 in a size 12.0. I did not notice that the staff there made any attempt to force me to take a Brooks shoe as the previous reviewer stated. The shoes were 104.95 which I confirmed as MSRP on Brooks' website. Overall, I had a fantastic experience at 9th Street Active Feet and will continue to send business there, not only because they are good at what they do, but because they are a LOCALLY owned family business.

I went there in good faith as I have multiple foot problems. The clerk waiting on me told me they only had one brand of shoes that would work ... even though they obviously sold several brands. I told him that the pair he had chosen felt way too large and uncomfortable. He told me that was because I walked "prorated" ... funny I've been to the podiatrist multiple times and not once has she mentioned that. He told me to take the shoes home, walk around in them for 24 hours, if I didn't like them bring them back. Regrettably I bought them. When I returned them the next day ... with only trying them on again at home ... I was charged a $15.00 restocking fee. As it was the manager that was working with me I asked him if this was their policy ... to only show the customer one brand of shoes ... he mumbled something again about me walking prorated. What a rip-off. Unfortunately I did my home work after the fact. The shoes he sold me were Brooks. More than likely one of the most expensive brands they sell .. and more than likely they get a commission for every pair they sell. You CAN find every brand they sell online ... much cheaper ... and with free shipping. Find your correct size and shop online and you will save yourself a lot of trouble.

I went to visit my physical therapist because of a nasty case of plantar fasciaitis. He told me he could sell me a pair of 300 dollar orthotics or I could go visit Walt Cleary and his staff at 9th Street Active Feet. Naturally I chose the latter, and it was the best decision I've made in a while. Upon my arrival, I had to wait for about 20 minutes to get help, but when my number was finally called, I received some of the best service I've ever had in a retail establishment. The young man who helped me was courteous and he really seemed to know what he was talking about. He allowed me to try on at least 5 or 6 pair of shoes until I found the ones I liked and was even able to describe the individual differences between the shoes. It's been years since someone has actually sat down with me and measured my foot, not to mention put the shoes on my feet and tied them for me. 9th Street is truly a full service institution. Now, a week later, my feet are feeling better than ever before and I have 9th Street to thank. If you get the chance, go there, wait as long as you have to, and allow those young men to examine your feet. You will not regret it.

I had a bad experience last time I went to 9th Street Active Feet and didn't go back for a couple years. I decided to try again, sad to say nothing has changed. The service was terrible. No one acknowledged that I was waiting or that they would be with me, even though staff had the time while they were standing at the register chatting, waiting for the customers they were helping to finish shopping. When my number finally was called, the sales person was short, uninterested in fitting me (maybe because I'm not a runner), and bad-mouthed a local competitor. I won't be returning.

On Wednesday before Thanksgiving, my son and I attempted to purchase a pair of shoes. My son has CP and we have always purchased shoes from this store in the past. On this day, Wednesday, we were amazed when we were told that his size shoe was not available and they did not know if they would order any shoes for him as they did not know what the store manager was going to do. We were told to call back in a week and talk to the store manager to see if he would order a pair for us. We were not given any information (name, business card, etc.) pertaining to the store manager. And, we were informed that if we ordered when we talked to the store manager, it would take until January to receive the shoes. The two of us left the store dismayed and will never come to this store again due to the poor (really, lack of) service. We always felt it was okay to pay more for our shoes here because of the service. What we received on Wednesday was anything but service!

I loved the attention I received when I went to buy my running shoes. They were very detailed and thorough in measuring my feet. The location is good, but the prices are a little high. But the prices are worth the attention.

This store is the best athletic shoe store I've been in and I've lived in Toronto, LA and Denver. The service is great. You have to take a turn and wait for a fitting, but when it's your turn you will receive the same great service as everyone else. They carry all top lines. My feet are nasty, nasty with severe pronation, etc. Came out of there with a great shoe (Brooks Ariel) and for the first time in my life I can jog without pain. Walt is the manager and he and his team are the best. Full line of athletic wear too, but the shoe service is worth the wait. If you've no other reason to visit Durham other than to go to this store, you will find it worthwhile. A rare gem indeed.

Small and independent athletic shoe stores are almost a thing of the past. 9th Street Active feet is a great place to buy running shoes. The service is great and they allow you to TRY out the shoe - and to return it if you are not happy with your choice/selection. They are a very benevolent shop and give a lot back to the community - including the sponsorship of a United Way race in the spring of every year. Lastly, and most importantly, their prices are quite reasonable.

I can't claim to be an avid exerciser. But even so, I still like to have good-fitting running/walking shoes for those walks around the neighborhood or even treks around the mall or amusement park. 9th Street Active Feet is a great place to get impeccable service and find products that suit your needs. Athletes may find this shop particularly useful -- I noticed cleated shoes, and other specialty shoes in-stock. The staff is very well-trained in measuring and evaluating your feet and gives you attentive but not pushy service. The prices here aren't cheap -- but aching or even damaged feet aren't worth saving a few bucks.
