I volunteer for St. Francois and I just wanted to address the comment about the dog that you adopted that was sick. At the location I volunteer at, ALL of our dogs have been vaccinated as much as they can (such as, a puppy may have only had two "puppy shots" as it is not old enough for the third). Your comment that your dog may have rabies: highly unlikely. Any vet would spot the signs, and all dogs have seen a vet. It may be true that your pet has not been VACCINATED for rabies, because this CANNOT be done until the pet is at least six months old. I have heard of it being done at five months, but most vets wait until six.

I'm not sure about St Francois Society yet. They are difficult to reach and it seems like their volunteers aren't always good at getting back with people.

Six years ago, when I had to put a dog down, I went on a mission to find a friend for the one left behind. I stumbled upon St. Francois Society having an adoption fair at PetsMart in Chesterfield. I was quite impressed with the staff and the animals available for adoption. It was there a young boy with the volunteers introduced me to a little puppy named "Mama's Pup". He was just 4 weeks old and only with the group because he was nursing.

Well.....Mama's pup and I locked eyes and that was that. I was lucky enough to be able adopt him - and waited until he was old enough to come home. I met his foster family and could not have been more impressed with the care they gave him and the other animals in their care.

Long story short, this guy is my best friend and constant companion. He is a great dog from a great group of caring animal lovers.

Thanks for finding my best friend for me! I will be back soon looking for another friend to add to our home!

To the person giving a 1 star review: Have you ever adopted an animal before??? Illnesses occur, and sometimes vets do not catch them. This is a RESCUE group, saving animals!!! I have had both adopted animals, as well as purebreds. I have had different illnesses coming straight from the breeder, as well as adoptions. If you adopted a child, and there was an illness not detected, how would you react? As for vaccinations, I have NEVER heard of anyone but you say they have no vaccinations from a rescue group! Maybe you should think about the animals before you say they need to be shut down. Should one person bitching about something need to be a reason to shut down a shelter, thus resulting in the deaths of countless animals? How selfish are you?

My daughter has been a volunteer at the Brentwood PetSmart for the St. Francois Society for the last year so I have been there every weekend to drop her off and to pick her up . I have been impressed with the quality of the dogs, and the great care the full time staff take to really get to know the dogs in their care. The staff is very careful to make sure they are placed in suitable homes.
I know they hope to raise funds to build a separate puppy and kitten house to give the small ones a less stressful environment, quarantined from the older animals coming in from pounds, and those dumped or abandoned by their owners.
Their practice of having many of their dogs fostered before they are put up for adoption is a very good way to help insure that their next home will be a forever home.
We adopted a kitten from St. Francois last spring who was healthy and happy to be out of a cage! He has grown into a beautiful cat.
Like all dog and cat shelters, especially in these economic times, they could use more funding. My daughter and her friends who also volunteer have held three bake sales and are planning a dog walk to help raise funds for the puppy and kitten shelter.
The PetSmart staff couldn't be more helpful!

More like St. Francois Pet Illness Center. My dog had tape worms, and an ear infection. AND NO VACCINATIONS! They sent me home with a dog that could have rabies... What if she did, then what??? What if she bit my pregnant mother?? That could possibly kill the baby in her womb!!!! This Society needs to end. Now.

What ever you do don't get your dog or cat from St. Francois Society.

We fell in love with our dog after a random trip into Petsmart one weekend. While those who volunteer for St. Francois may not be easy to reach or timely, they take excellent care of the animals. Our dog was rescued with his brother after his other siblings were shot. He has been a wonderful addition to our family, and I thank those at St. Francois for being there to take care of him until we found him. They do a wonderful service.

When we decided to add another animal to our family, we decided to try some of the small rescue groups rather than go through the ASPCA or the Humane Society. We went to petfinder.org and after looking through the animals available, found the one we wanted and contacted the Society.

The animals are either kept at a foster parent's house or you can go to a local PetSmart on adoption day and choose. We decided to go for the more informal setting of the foster parent's home to see how the cat acted in a normal setting.

The volunteer was very nice and welcomed us into her home and made sure we were very comfortable with the animal of our choosing before we left.

With our fee, we received initial baby shots, worming and a certificate for spaying/neutering from one of several local animal clinics/hospitals. They also ID chipped our kitten before we left with her.

The fee is a bit expensive, but it's nice knowing that we saved an animal that would more than likely have been put to sleep at a regular shelter.
