I recently attended a book reading on March 7th at Cody's bookstore.
My attendance was impromptu since I was merely browsing the store while the reading was taking place.

The women were reading from a book about Homelands, one woman was Lebanese and read a riveting section from her essay about the recent bombing of Lebanon by Israel. This was particularly of interest to me since I am half Lebanese.

Toward the end of the reading, a woman who worked at the store cut the reading short. Personally, I found her very rude and tactless, she disrupted the reading more than once. I sat down to hear a reading and instead I was kicked out of the store.

I think she might have been offended by the content, which is surprising because we are in the Bay area and this is Cody's isn't it??

Kudos for the book which I plan to purchase when I can (unfortunately the store didn't give me much time) and shame on Cody's for their behaviour that night.

This store has closed!
This store has one of the best Children's book selections in San Francisco, as well as awesomely talented staff! The store is big enough that they have a huge selection of everything, but the Children's section really shines.

PROS: easy public transit
CONS: no parking

Finally this past year residents of San Francisco got their very own Cody?s books. I have been going to the original Cody?s on Telegraph Ave in Berkeley for years and when I heard that they would be opening a store in San Francisco I was very happy. Even though Cody?s is a much bigger operation now I still think this is the best independent bookstore in the bay area. They have many titles to chose from and the are often on the publishing houses must ?stop? place when authors go on their PR tours. If you are ever in Downtown SF stop by Cody?s to get a great experience of a book store. I highly recommend it!

PROS: Greast Store

I originally regularly visited the Cody's Books in Berkeley, but when I moved away from Berkeley I resorted to buying my books at large chain stores like Barnes and Nobles. Although there is nothing wrong with those stores, I always prefered Cody's for their warm and cozy atmosphere. In addition to having a fantastic selection of books, graphic novels, and magazines, I enjoy attending the book readings and signings as well. The staff is also extremely friendly and helpful with anything you might want to find.

Cody's Books is an amazing independent bookstore and I'm so happy they've finally come to SF! Right next door to the Virgin Megastore, and so close to Union Square. The place is huge and they have every book and magazine imaginable and such a knowledgeable staff. They're also great for book readings and signings as well.
