.

I've lived in Honolulu for over 4 years and never learned how to surf. Watching the surf lessons in Waikiki was a complete turn-off -- super-crowded, inconsistent waves, catamarans coming and going, etc etc.

But when my sister came to visit this past week, she suggested taking a lesson from Hawaiian Fire (recommended by a friend). I saw that they taught at Kalaeloa Beach, a (pretty much) deserted beach on the west side of the island with consistent waves. I said, "What the heck? Let's do it!"

Learning to surf with Hawaiian Fire was an AWESOME experience. There was practically NO ONE else at the beach except our group (there were like 5 or 6 instructors and 9 students -- YOU CAN'T BEAT THAT RATIO!!). That was such a bonus, too, because we wouldn't have to worry about hitting other people ("speed bumps" as the instructors called them) that would be in our way like there would be at Waikiki Beach!

The instructors were awesome and super encouraging. They explained everything clearly and patiently, not rushing the lesson at all. They provided us with all the necessary gear (rash guards, booties, etc), explained ocean safety, and then proceeded to teach us the correct procedure to stand up on the board. We then practiced on our own board (still on land), and they had us make any corrections that needed to be made. When they were convinced we had good form (again there was no rush!) -- it was surf time! Of course, as soon as I was paddling out, I forgot EVERYTHING they taught us, but they made sure to remind me of everything when I got out there. :)

The waves were amazing -- not too big that we'd be nervous to surf them, but also not so small that we would think they were lame. And they just kept coming in, perfect wave after perfect wave! It was awesome! In the water, the instructors were really encouraging and supportive. They didn't rush us, and they gave us pointers on how to improve our stance or position for the next wave. They gave us PLENTY of time in the water, and I definitely feel like I got MORE than my money's worth out of these guys!

I would also recommend buying the $40 DVD with all the photos (by a PROFESSIONAL photographer) at the end. You will definitely want evidence of yourself carving it up out there, and the photos are amazing!!

.

Because fire fighters are the ones teaching the surf lessons I felt a bit safer with them since they would know better than most other people what to do if some kind of emergency or some accident happened.. Even though I only took one weekend lesson from them I had a very pleasant experience. Everything you need to learn to surf they will provide for you including rash guards and the boards. The guys teaching the lessons were very nice and helpful. I would definitely recommend them to anyone wanting to learn how to surf.
