I love McAleers! Great local pub! Actually the oldest authentic Irish Pub on the UWS. There are alway neighbor locals, young and old, tourists, a good mix come here for the delicious reliable pub grub, wings, burgers, esp the sw burger, yum! Great beer selection and they serve a very good brunch on Sundays. Why wait in the cold outside Sarabeth's for hours ?? A Plus, the charming owner, Keith McAleer has done a great job in keeping up with the times and the ever changing neighborhood all these years.!

I've been coming here to Mac's for some time now and I must say it's better than ever. The staff is cool and the food and atmosphere is outstanding.
Keith McAleer, the owner, has done a great job of maintaining a neighborhood pub in an area of constant change.

I'm a newcomer to the Upper West Side and stumbled upon Mac's one Friday night. The place just feels comfortable to me. The food is good and the staff is friendly. The wings special they have is the best in NYC. Where else can you get a free double order of wings with the purchase of 2 pitchers of beer.

Mac Leer's definitely feels like your neighborhood bar, even if you are not from this neighborhood! Staff seems to like you and each other! Great wings, good burgers and decent football specials.

I really love this bar. I come in at least once a week with friends and have been doing so for a few months now. I doesn't matter if we sit at the bar or a table we get good service and 100% of the time are recongnized. Cool thing about the staff, they actually seem to be friends.

I love love love the southwest burger!! And they have magners cider, which I love.

Not as crazy as the otehr places in the area but when i do come in on fri night its always a blast, good music.

BIG PLUS*** Smoking on the patio****

Still cannot believe it. I went into this bar with 10 friends when it was definitely not busy. All 10 of my friends ordered and one of them got 2 pitchers which we were sharing. One my friends and I wanted water, so I tried to order. I waited patiently for a few minutes to even be waited on. When I finally was, I asked for 2 waters. Then the male bartender continued to serve a whole bunch of people, but no water for me. After 10 minutes I was super annoyed, watching him drink and mess around behind the bar. I told the female bartender I'd been waiting for 10 minutes for water. She shrugged me off and continued to wait on others. Finally, I was like "Excuse me, but I've been waiting over 10 minutes for water. Can I get it?". Then she very rudely says "It's just water. It's not even a paid drink". At which point I told her off - especially since I was holding a tip for the water in my hand! She called the bouncer over (who was pretty nice about the whole thing - only reasonable person on the staff) and had me kicked out, so my entire party left. If I was the manager - I'd fire both bartenders. My friends and I were celebrating a b-day and were spending a lot of money. They lost hundreds of dollars, just because they didn't want to serve water. Since there are so many other bars and much better service - go someplace else. The people at this bar don't care about you. You will get served faster at Gin Mill or Jake's Dilemna, even when they are packed.

Lived around the corner for eons, heard good things about it, drank there a few times - but until I had a burger I had no idea! Even on an off night, they are pretty good. But when they are great, they are very very great.

McAleer's doesn't fit into the typical greasy pub fare department. Granted, they have their fair share of deep fried goodies. However, they have fantastic wraps and salads for my taste that rival anyplace. My boyfriend and I usually stop by Saturday nights for a bite after the movies or whatever.
I heard it's been around since the 50's and that seems quite a feat in these parts. Keep on rockin' McAleer's and keep doing what your doing.

Hey you guys got it right. We were tired of waiting for a table next door (Sarabeths) a few week ago. We sat down at Mac's and had a fantastic meal. My friend and I both had brunch with unlimited Bloody Marys. What a deal! I will wait no more!!

This place was getting kind of "tired" but has changed for the better once again. The food selection and quality is very good for an Irish pub and restaurant. There is a lot of compitition out there but I find McAleer's a good value.
The best deal they have is the wings special--it's great!
The outside cafe is good for people watching and to be seen.

Mac's has always had good food but it's getting better. They added a BBQ pork sandwich and it's unbelievable. The sandwich is huge and the sauce is the best I've ever had here in NYC and I love BBQ sauce. It reminds me of being in the South again. Keep it up guys!

My husband and I were visiting New York and stoped in to McAleer's on a Friday night. We thought we might have been a little too old for the "bar crowd" on a Friday night.
We were able to sit at the bar when a very nice man offered his set to me. I soon found out it was the owner of the establishment Keith McAleer.
Mr. McAleer was extremely friendly and helpful with regards to out of towners visiting New York. He made some great sugestions as what to see in the city.
We stayed for a few drinks and split a steak salad. It really was enough for two people and it was fantastic!
When ever we come back to New York, McAleer's will always be on our list.
Once again, Mr. McAleer we had a great time during our stay and we could recommend your establishment to anyone.

I must say I was a little hesitant about going to McAleer's for brunch after partying there the night before. That's not to say I had a bad time. I had a grat time and enjoyed a great burger.
Brunch can be a little tricky for some, but not for mac's as I found out. Dollar for dollar it's one of the best brunchs' I've had in New York. I had the Baily's Infused French Toast and my girlfriend had the Hot ta' Molly Breakfast Burrito (named after the owners daughter ) both of which came with unlimited bloody mary's or mimosa's. The hair of the dog did help but the food was even better. My hats off to McAleer's and their great staff.

karlk (below) you don't know what your talking about. I'm a regular at Mac's and you got it all wrong. The shots at Mac's average between $7-$8 and they have a special 4 shots for $10. The only shots for $10 each are the high end single malt scotches and high end tequilla's. Either you can't read or your just ...well whatever. I think the food is good and I eat there all the time. Each entree comes with soup / salad and bread. The prices at Mac's are very reasonable. I think your one of those bums that got thrown out for being what you are and now are are trying to badmouth the place. For every one like you there are a hundred like ME!!

McAleer's is a very overpriced irish pub/sports bar - for instance, shots are $10, mac &cheese is listed on the menu as a $13 entree ("made with chedder and jack cheese, $3 extra for diced chicken or ham"); their food is nothing to write home about.

On a cold winter night I was eating a burger at the bar when all of a sudden she appeared. She looked like a goddess. I was mezmorized by her attention to the perfect Guinness pour while still being able to brush back her flowing red locks exposing her beautiful pink cheek bones. I fell in love with Aubrey that night. Oh yea, the burger was great too!!

My boyfriend and I came to New York for a week-end getaway. We stumbled upon McAleer's on Friday night after seeing a show downtown. We ended up staying there the rest of the night. The place was cool and the staff was great. I dropped my wallet in the ladies room only to notice it was missing when it was time to pay our bill. I freaked out but was told a wallet was found in the ladies room by the waitress. Yep, It was mine and everything was there. Now, I can truly say I LOVE NEW YORK and McAleer's

Mac's has been one of my favorite bars in NYC especially on The Upper West Side. It's not a fly by night operation. It's tried and true. The food is good pub grub but they also have a mean Steak that would compare to anybody. It's not glitzy and that's why I like it. Keith McAleer (the owner) has done a great job at keeping the place comfortable for all concerned. The beer is always cold and the food has always been consistant. I can recommend this place to anybody. Oh yea, the staff is pretty hot too, especially that Aussie bartender.

Had a burger and maybe the best chili I've had in the city. Everybody was friendly and cool. Great place to hang. Stopped by later at night and the place was rockin'. Met some cool people. The bartender was funny and I shamelessly flirted with the waitress. The prices were ok for the upper west side, they had a beer special me and my buds took advantage of. We came back later for a game, they have a big HD TV that rocks. Great neighborhood bar, the kind of place Bogart or Hemingway would hang out. Burgers and chili were awesome. The girlfriend was glad they had veggie chili and wraps.

Last week I came home again. Mcaleer's was my haunt in my twenties. It was a great place to meet people. As a matter of fact it's where I met my wife. My job took out of New York for a couple of years.
I recently moved back to New York with my wife and son. I stopped into Mac's for a cold one and a bite to eat. The upper west side changed a lot but McAleer's was still there. The staff is new but the feeling is the same. The food is better than ever and the people were great. Many places like to boast about their burgers or what ever but mac's is number one in my book.

I tell you These guys got it right. The burgers are one of the best in town and I know burgers. They have a good selection of beer and a friendly staff. I like going here to get the "wings special" with the guys after a game just to hang out . Last time I went there was on a Sunday afternoon with my girlfriend. I didn't know they seved brunch at the time. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was great not to mention the unlimited bloody mary's. You gotta try "Joe's hash and eggs" probably the best I've ever had. The place has been around for years and I hope it stays. Cheers to McAleer's!

This place used to be a lot of fun, but that sure changed. They used to have a great staff, but it seems like the staff changes every time I go in...and not for the better. I don't know what it's trying to be now, but it seems to not want to be a fun Irish Pub anymore. Too bad. Keep walking up Amsterdam and you'll find much better options.

Went here on St. Patrick's Day, and will never go back. Looking for the restroom, I was screamed at by a waitress to get out of her way, then told by another waitress to "stop elbowing the waitresses"?!? If this is how they treat all of their customers, I am surprised they get any business at all.

Not a great place if you are looking for a scene and in all honesty, I got kind of bored sitting there even though I had good friends around. The bartenders aren't above usual and neither is the staff's service, especially if by the off chance it gets busy... I did like the food though.

I'm used to going out to clubs and lounges downtown and I must say, sometimes, it's just a nice change. No velvet ropes, just a nice laid back place, no model-types behind the bar (well, if there were, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't complain...can't blame a guy for liking his eye candy right?), just friendly faces. The food is good old Irish fried stuff that hits home on nights you just want to eat greasy and watch a game. And when the other Irish pubs of the neighborhood are sickly crowded, this place is a good place to actually find a seat at the bar...

The food is good old Irish fried stuff that hits home on nights you just want to eat greasy and watch a game. And when the other Irish pubs of the neighborhood are sickly crowded, this place is a good place to actually find a seat at the bar...

Pros: laid back

.

We do what we call Booza Palooza's, which are neighborhood themed afternoons of careless and stupid drinking. Sometimes as many as 10 of us or as few as two. McAleers is always the starting point on the upper west side. Great place with good service and nice people. The last time we were there, we stayed a little longer than planned and were signifacantly smashed at the end of the day.

This is an ideal neighborhood pub. For NYC, the prices are as low as you
can go and they have a great selection of beers, including two McAleer's
microbrews. The food is great for what it is and they have a great burger
and the best grilled cheese in the city. As for the atmosphere, there is nowhere
that I've found where one can find such a comfortable, warm environment
with good tunes and plenty of TV's and still be served by such gorgeous
ladies! Cheers to McAleer's!

This place is great if you want to get a beer, have a burger, and watch a game on TV. Nothing special, just a good neighborhood joint. I enjoy this place.

Although the waitress let us know there was an hour wait for food, it took nearly twice as long for the mediocre grub to emerge. During that time, we had to get up and look for her any time we wanted another beer, and then to obtain and pay the bill. In fact, the only time she came over quickly all night was to check the tip on the bill right in front of us, and then openly complain about the 10% that we left (which she didn't even deserve). Completely not worth it.

Pros: None

Cons: , Noise, Mediocre Food

It's too bad that CitySearch gives this restaurant such a polite review, because it certainly does not deserve it nor is worth the business. The food is positively blah, service is possibly the worst ever, and the music is on so loud that you are unable to maintain a conversation! In fact, it was so loud that the bartender was unable to understand anything I was saying. This might explain why my order was completely screwed up.

This place has friendly bartenders A diverse crowd ,from the 70 year old former dentist to the Columbia students to the UWS yuppies. A great place to grab a drink and even some pub grub, but don't expect a scene.

The Scene
McAleer's stucco exterior may look almost scary at first sight, but inside is a surprisingly spacious, unthreatening watering hole that knows how to leave its customers alone. Those in search of rowdy times can go…
