Folsom Childrens Zoo & Botanical Gardens is a nice little zoo, especially for younger kids. There is a variety of interesting animals and a good effort has been made to provide the appropriate habitat. However, what's unique and special about Folsom Children's Zoo are the less traditional activities it offers the community. Kids ages 13 and older can do volunteer work there during the summer on their "Zoo Crew"--a coveted position in that age group. Also during the summer is Zoo Camp--a series of week long daycamps focusing on specific themes. In addition, there is Zoo School--daily one and one-half hour classes on a wide variety of subjects for elementary and preschool aged children. These classes typically last for a week. All of these activities provide kids with "hands-on" experiences that might not be possible in a larger facility. Also, a yearly favorite is "Boo at the ZOO" where community agencies and stores sponsor trick-or-treating. At Christmas, the zoo is decorated in lights and themes that families can enjoy on train rides through the zoo. Many Lincoln children have these activities as cherished memories.

PROS: Non-traditional activities provide unique hands-on experiences
CONS: It is rather small.

This is a nice little zoo for younger kids, but if you are used to big fancy zoos, you will be disappointed. But is is pretty good for younger kids--not too big, not too much walking, and you get pretty close to the animals. They always have fun kid activities at Halloween and they have good classes for kids in the summer.

PROS: Not very big.
CONS: Not very big.
