I recently visited the memphis animal shelter looking to adopt a dog for my daughter. My husband and I found a little puppy that we were interseted in adopting. We proceeded to speak to someone about adopting this puppy and were told that if we wanted this animal that we would have to come back and stand in line because several people wanted this dog. I then asked this person why we would have to do this that from past experiences I thought it was first come first serve. She proceeded to tell me that there was a waiting list on certain dogs and told me to leave unless there was a different dog I was intrested in. I then said to her I don't understand why any other dog would be any different in adopting then the one we wanted. We were never given a reason or explantion of why this was going on. My family and I returned the next day later in the day and noticed that the puppy that there was supposedly a waiting list for was still there. I still to this day can not understand why they did not want to adopt this dog out to us. We have adopted from this shelter before and never had problems like this before.

This is the city run shelter and it leaves a lot to be desired. The place smells disgusting, the front counter staff is rude, they don't keep detailed logs of animals that are picked up and destroyed. They seem to not care one way or the other. I visited with my father-in-law to get his dog and while waiting I toured the "holding area" where dogs were waiting to be adopted. Of course, there were the cute little puppies right up front (i always head to the back where the adult dogs usually get overlooked). There were several outwardly vicious dogs in this area making it uncomfortable to walk around. There were also several well-mannered ones, too.
Most of the animals on the "destroyed log" (the ones that are killed after 3 days) are generic in type/breed as I had to go there and look for a dog that escaped our petsitter while we were on vacation and there were hundreds that were listed as black lab mixes (like our Holli). We were never able to find out if they had picked her up or not. A complete overhaul of staff and management might help this facility.
