I went to this store yesterday just to simply pick up a book that I was told over the phone was diffinitely there. That is all I wanted to do,simple right?. Well when I arrived I was told the girl that I spoke to didn't exist b/c there aren't any girls working there or the girl that was there visiting may have picked the phone, which she wasn't supposed to do,HUH?!! What!! I was told over the phone that this store was in olde city, they closed at 10pm,and the book I was looking for was upstairs. They still proceeded to tell me I had the wrong store! I've never been to this store in my life. How would I know all of this information about this place if I didn't speak to someone that worked there!!!! To make a long story short, after all the bickering, sarcasm, and crazy eyes back and forth where was the book!!! Well well surprise surprise it was upstairs I wasn't crazy after all. The ghost I spoke to on the phone was right! Please don't go to this store. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND DRAMA
OMG all I wanted to do was buy a book can you imagine!

The Book Trader is one of my favorite places to stop by near the Old City area of Philadelphia. They have a huge variety of used books- one of the best used book stores I've been to. They have a very eclectic selection of books, and it's easy to find a jem. They also have a very nice area to sit and paruse through the books you may want to buy. It's a great change of pace from all the franchised book stores.

I'll admit that I'm biased about the Book Trader because I work here, but I'm also a regular customer of this and many other used book shops in Philly. Each shop definitely has it's own style, and perhaps it's own philosophy. At the Book Trader, the philosophy is to have more books than there is shelf space for. I don't think it's intentional, but it sort of just happens. The result is a treasure hunting experience for the customer, which only sometimes yields successful results. A book loving person will probably not mind this. However, it can be a daunting task if you are looking for something specific, or if you are claustrophobic (there are towering stacks of books everywhere, some as tall as a person).

I've read reviews on other sites complaining about the poor customer service. I'll only say this: some of the staff is more helpful than others. We are not following any set policy like some corporate cookie cutter slaves. If you talk to me, I will probably help you more than you need. If I'm not there, talk to the muscle-bound guy with the tattoos. He probably knows more about what's in the store than anybody.

About trading: The Book Trader offers store credit in the amount of 10% of the cover price. Hence more recently published books mean better credit. Cash is not offered for book trades. we usually ask for trades to be left so we can take our time to process them and call you back with a credit you receive. Every Thursday night we throw out boxes of books we can't use after 8pm, so come and take them if you want.

I hope I'm not being unethical by writing this. I'm not trying to be unethical. Honestly, I'm not getting anything out of the except the chance to talk to you in the future, which could be good or bad, depending on who you are.

Pros: Tons of books. Usually a nice atmosphere.

Cons: I could take or leave the staff. You might not find what you're looking for.

I have been buying books from The Book Trader for many years and they are the very BEST! An outstanding selection of titles and friendly and helpful staff. One of the best bookstores that I have ever encountered.

This is a great bookstore- everything on every subject! The prices are a bit high, but I do a lot of trading, so I don't mind. You can "sell" boxes of books there and they will credit your account to buy new ones. All the kitties there are a plus! :)

I used to shop at the old location of The Book Trader and like it but would only go when I had hours to spare because finding anything was always difficult. There are still a ton of books, many sections for all different tastes, a bit of art and many many cats! The only drawback is reduced hours of operation (no more open till midnight), but you can still lounge for hours upstairs reading. And now it's better lit!
