American Flatbread: Burlington Hearth, one block away from Burlington dining juggernaut Vermont Pub and Brewery, has the best pizza and some of the best beer I've ever had. But the experience went something like this:

On a Thursday night, we (party of 4) placed our name on the list and were told to expect a perfectly reasonable 35 minute wait. After one hour and fifteen minutes, we were seated at a table. The waitress never introduced herself, just rushed into the specials and asked us if we wanted drinks. One of the reasons I went to this restaurant was the extensive selection of craft beers, but she hurried us to get out our orders.

Our pizzas (expect $18.50 for 2 people, plus tax and gratuity) came quickly and was certainly delicious. After this point, the waitress never checked back with us until she asked if we were ready for the check. We instead asked for a desert menu. After the deserts came (the apple pie was prepared with generous nutmeg, which might not suit everyone's taste; the brownie was crumbly(?!)) the Nameless Waitress did, in fact, check back with us. According to the check, her name was Noelle. She gave us the check and left.

She left. She changed out of her clothes, put on her jacket, slung her purse over her shoulder and left. I have never had a server walk out on a check before!

After flagging down another server??Noelle never introduced whoever was taking her section??we paid our check and left, but asked to speak with the manager. The hostess found the manager, and we explained our treatment (we didn't discuss the wait time mentioned above, such things happen). The manager clearly did not take us seriously, but nodded and muttered about "Thanks for letting us no, and hopefully there won't be more . . . experiences like this."

He presumed that we would, in fact, return for another "experience." We left, stunned that a. that just happened and b. we weren't offered any sort of comp.

I would gladly go back for the Zero Gravity homebrew, their "Bock Obama" was perfectly pared for pizza, and their raspberry wassail went well with the desert. But next time I want their beer, I'll stand at the bar. Next time I want their pizza, I'll buy it out of the freezer at Shaws.

Tips: Call ahead, or just order their takeout.

Pros: very tasty pizza that no one else makes, large beer selection, good atmosphere

Cons: a little pricey but that's expected from a college town restaurant

American Flatbread has been my restaurant of choice since moving to Burlington. There are many interesting pizzas on the menu and you can create your own combinations as well. Pizzas are cooked in an open hearth that is visible from most seating areas. The ingredients are fresh and flavorful. Their salads are very good as well.
Service is excellent.
Beer list is HUGE! Lots on tap, and they brew their own beer too.
Very family friendly, if you go early evening, it's mostly families with kids.
Large pizzas average around $15, tho with the thin crust this is actually less pizza than you might think.
I have absolutely no complaints about American Flatbread, so check them out if you want some excellent pizza!

PROS: Unique flavorful pizza, very warm/friendly atmosphere.
CONS: None.
