This past weekend we received a letter from the Wisconsin Avenue Collection advising that because of declining sales and their resulting inability to pay rent and sales taxes, they had gone out of business and were/would declare bankruptcy. While this is sad, since we liked John and the other personnel, it is a drastically different story than the one we were told when we went into the store in early July, 2009. Rather, John told a story involving the landlord's unwavering decision to raise his rent--forcing him to close. The store was largely empty and picked over. Unfortunately (for us) we had consigned a number of pieces-furniture and jewelry--that had sold but for which we had not yet been paid. When asked (in July) when we would receive a check for the sold items, obviously not knowing that they were intending to declare bankruptcy and liquidate , John concocted some story about the bookkeepers cutting checks the next week. Over the years, we have both bought and consigned items--first to the Connecticut Avenue Collection, which probably closed due to financial difficulties, and now the Wisconsin Avenue Collection, each run by the same people. We figure that John "beat" us out of about $500. Like a bad penny, he will no doubt re-surface as the Tenleytown Collection or the Cleveland Park Collection or the Chevy Chase Collection; however, this time we will be forearmed and not set foot into the shop, and we advise you to also be forewarned and understand that if you deal with this merchant in whatever business he re-establishes, you will be taken. Caveat Emptor. Robert G

I consigned 183 items of property from a decedent's estate with Wisconsin Ave Collection but would not do so again. Items were sold over a 10 month period. I received four separate payments from the Collection. Each time he gave me a check, the owner gave me a simple unsigned list showing the name of the item and the price he says he got for it -- no date of sale for any items, no slips signed by purchasers, no proof, no nothing. Not even the Consignment store's letterhead at the top of several of the lists. No way to audit his lists. I asked him for sales slips with customer signatures and he refused. In my opinion, this is no way to do business.

Business Response:

Next Time do an Estate Sale For Ms G we took the large inventory from long standing business friends not from her. Our agreement is only 67 days and had reconsigned a couple of times. Our policy is on the check the items numbers are listed. We never give reciepts of signed customers no one does it is private. As an attorney Ms. G knew that and NEVER asked for them anyway. We sold the items at top dollar. Ms. G. was upset a few things got away that SHE wanted. An average of 200 consignors are delt with coming and going. We are sorry that she did not understand our policies and procedures but she did read the contract.

Wisconsin Ave Collection is run by con artists. I consigned over $40,000 of furniture to them and was not paid one cent from the sales for almost two years until I hired a lawyer and had to fight to get paid. They are liars and crooks, and my lawyer had fought with them on behalf of other clients. Do not patronize them and by all means do not consign anything to them - YOU'LL BE SORRY!!!

Business Response:

Such Drama When we try to work out getting the best prices and go off of our contracts this is what happens. Original date for Mr. J's contract was 97 days. His items were reconsigned many many times instead of telling him sorry take them somewhere else. When I was out of town and him calling the shop not getting an answer...sorry. His attorney had never been involved with WAC consignors he has his facts wrong.

This shop is in a very good location and lots of parking. They have some of the best selections in tradional used furniture that I have found. My clients rave on my finds for them and at such great prices!!!
