My wife and I went there to get a bed. There were running their "full back" promotion, so, we picked out a nice mattress and used the store credit to buy a picture, a lamp, and (what we thought was) a bed frame. When we went to check out, after everything was signed and paid for, we were informed that the bed frame was actually just a headboard and that we would have to buy a bed frame to attach it to ($70). When I asked if we could just use the left over promotion money to bring that down a bit (we still had about $30 left), we were told that you couldn't use the promotion money to buy a bed frame because they were exempt from being bought with store credit. That's not the bad part, though.

When I went to pick up my new bed/mattress/bed frame, the guy in the warehouse told me that he had to go into the store to get the headboard for me. I told him that there must be a mistake because I had had paid for a new one. I even had a conversation with the sales guy asking if I could get the floor model instead of a new one because the floor model was about $100 cheaper than a new one and we could really have used that extra money to get some other stuff, at which point the sales guy told me that the company policy was that you couldn't buy floor models with the store credit unless you were willing to pay full price, at which point I told him that I wanted a new one (and he said "okay"). So, the warehouse guy goes to get his manager, who happened to be closing up shop when I was making my purchase, so I thought that I must be in luck because he was there at the time of the purchase and would be able to straighten things out because he agreed that I shouldn't have to pay full price for a floor model.

This guy came up to me and said that the agreement was for the floor model and that he head me and the sales guy agree on that, which is not true. When I told called him out on it, he said that he had heard the conversation himself, which is total bull because, while he was near by when I was checking out, he was going over reports for the day and talking on the phone. When I told him that, he told me that the floor models are just as good as the new ones and that they just sit on the rack as a display item and that I would be getting something just as good as a new one. When I told him that I was not happy paying full price for a discounted item, he basically told me to take it or leave it.

Because the choice was then to either take the floor model or not have a headboard, I took the headboard. I just got screwed out of $100 store credit, which we really could have used, on top of having to cough up an extra $70 to get something that I already thought that I had bought. I am never shopping with Colder's again and I will go out of my way to let other people know that they should never shop there.

I read all these negative comments about Colder's it makes me both annoyed at all of you unconsiderate people and slightly embarassed I used to work there. And when people mention certain salespeople I know personally who are actually very good at their job and you dealt with them on a bad day makes me sad. It's not the salespeople's fault for being "stalkers". We are put on an up list and we are forced to wait in the front of the store in order to wait for the next customer to walk through the door, and if we are not 50-100 feet from you throughout your visit we are scolded. They have very high expectations of their salespeople and if they do not make a certain quota 3 months in 1 year they are fired.

Not to mention, it can be very hectic on the busy days when you're juggling more than 1 customer. Everybody expects help right away and the reality of it is writing up a furniture order and making sure everything is in stock and so forth is not as easy as it sounds. And with all the different codes you have to memorize and put on the order, as required by the owners of Colder's, make it very time consuming and confusing for everybody.

So please remember that next time you're having a not so pleasant experience. They all truly want to help you (some more than others) because at the end of the day, you're feeding their families. But it's not as easy and stress free as you apparently assume.

The good ones are; Nick A., Bob K., Machelle Y., Ray D., and the manger Roy H. They all are really helpful and super nice people who do try very hard to be there for help rather than the commission.

The incident occurred at the Grafton, WI Colder's the evening of October 13th 2008. My wife, two children and I went in hoping to make a purchase, and as a result of this we left empty-handed...and angry. Details:

http://www.alexfalkenberg.com/2008/10/14/colders-half-back-promotion-might-be-a-scam/

It's been 1.5 months now, and still no resolution. We did receive some phone messages apologizing and an email saying they'd make it right. After our reply, we got an answer saying "call us", but have since not heard from them again. It seems once we acknowledged their attempts, they were done. We sent email about a week ago asking for final resolution/official clarification of the terms of their Half Back/Full Back promotions. No reply.

We obviously are NOT recommending anyone shop at Colder's, engage in their promotions, or accept their store credits until this is resolved. Please comment at our site, too, if you've had issues with Colders.
