This is the worst gay bar I've been to, but what do you expect for TN? There's usually an outrageous cover charge, and they over price their drinks. DO NOT start a tab with a card because they WILL charge you a $25 fee to start a tab. They

Every song sounded exactly like the one before and songs that should NEVER be given a house beat, were. No. Just no.
I love dancing to a song, picking out the nuances etc, but with these mixes one song can't be distinguished from the one

The past 10 ten years or so I have been to a far share of gay clubs around the country and i can honestly say i have had the WORST experience at play. There's a nice new dance floor and its physical building is decent that's the only

High cover charge, Drinks are overpriced, in small plastic cups. I would recomend free soda for the D Driver, $3 for a small .50 amount of soda deters them from wanting to go. The show we saw was ok I guess but alot of just walking around

I would suggest going to Tribe, next door bar 1st for some drinks. Kinda a video bar then head over to Play next door for some dancing and drag. This seems to be the really only dance gay club in nashville. Believe me I tried to find other places, but the other few bars were small and dead through the week...only good on Saturday night. Average friday night and Tribe was DEAD on Friday, but hoping before club hours on Saturday. stop by for a quick eat at House of Yum...not bad!

BORING BORING BORING! THE MUSIC IS A BORE, THE PEOPLE ARE A BORE, THE SHOWS ARE A BORE, AND THE WHITE PAINT IS AWFUL. WHY THE HELL IS THERE AN ATTENDANT IN THE LADIES RESTROOM, I DON'T NEED HELP WITH THE SOAP! THERE SHOULD NOT BE A 10$ COVER

I've lived in Nashville for a long time. I've also visited other cities that have much better atmospheres. These guys have no idea on how to run a bar, club or what ever they call their little ghetto hole. I guess since it is the only place to go in Nashville, the crew takes advantage of the fact that they can and will do what they want because they know that the guys and gals will do it if they want to have a good time. Play is FULL of cliques and dumb twinks with attitude. Nashville has the beauty, but the residents believe they are in New York.....bahahahaaaa. So pathetic. Parking is a freaking joke! Same old music from the same old tired "DJ's" All you hear, Brittney, Cher, Beyonce, Lady GaGa. blah blah blah These guys need to visit other cities, like L.A., New York, Chicago, Miami, Austin. Then, they will see how to run and build a great club.

I went into Play for the first time I am crazy by nature and dancing is what I do. I was asked by security not to do certain things like touch the floor because there was broken glass, and I did as I was told. Well, the next day when I came back because I had so much rockin fun!! The manager says "Honey listen, I know you were drinking last night." I denied it and he said "You didn't drink at the bar but you drank before you came in. Act out like that again and you'll be tested." Act out? It's a club. I'm supposed to dance. My friends have been telling me he's just irked because I danced with his gay lover and turned him straight ;) Anyways, the guy I was with also got ridiculously overcharged for his alcohol and was practically molested by some of the staff, but he's pretty hot I'd molesst him to so I'm cool with that ;)

Pros: Awesome music, awesome people on the floor

Cons: Comments from management are pretty painful.

I love going to Play. In fact, I would rather go to Play than to any other bar because I feel that it is a lot safer. I do think that the management could lighten up a bit.

I think the only con I have is that the admission price has gone up for people like me who are too young to drink since they hand out feel jello shotss... or whatever they hand out.

The only thing I would warn people about is to be sober then you get there.... EXTREMELY. I almost got arrested becuase they thought I had been drinking... even though I had told them I had just come from an NA meeting and had my chips on my key chain.

Otherwise, I have no complaints. I love meeting new people there. Except the creepy old guys who like to come on to people old enough to be their grand daughters.

Pros: Best Drag show in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD!

Cons: A little bit of arrogance

Yes, read the previous reviews carefully. The cost of the overpriced drinks in plastic cups can vary from one bartender to the next (so can the attitudes). And, as another reviewer noted the ATM up front that looks like it belongs in a laundromat, generates $$ for the club, so go figure.

I don't know where some of these people came from, but Play/Tribe has the competition beat in other cities with less than 2 million people by far. If you go to any bar/club every weekend it will get boring, regardless of how good it is. This is why Play takes the extra effort and has regular events (guest DJ's etcetera). In the almost 5 years since this club has been open I have not been over-charged and have only had good experiences. Also, Nicole is a great entertainer, and Oscar and Joe have always been very nice (manager & owner).

i have been going to Play for a couple of weeks now and on saturday nights you pretty much pay to smoke a ciggy outside. I mean that the most interesting thing about that club. The smoke deck. The staff is pretty nice and all,and the show is cute...Nicole is a must see, however, once you get over the first few times going it is just boring and overcrowed. That club is about as interesting as a cup of water with no ice,and futhermore the management there knows they are only gay club in town and they abuse that power worst than the pervious president. They will ban people for things like getting into verbal fights after the instingator tells first, but then the next night let a 17 year old into the bar claiming he turns 18 at midnight. I just say ,more fun can be found looking at the inside of your eyelids then this place.

I began going to Play 3 months ago and have been going almost every weekend. This bar/dance club offers something for everyone. I have only been on Fridays, Saturdays, and on Sunday so I don't know how Play is on Wed/Thu's. Fridays and Saturdays begin with a drag performance at 11pm, after an hour the dance floor opens and stays open until 3am. A second drag show begins an hour after the first show ends, at 1am. The performers lip sing to great songs, they dance, and they interact with patrons. The dance floor is great. There are colorful laser lights, smoke, and large monitors showing music/dance videos for the songs the DJ is playing.

There is 1 bar in the show room (where the drag queens perform). In the dance room there are bars on three walls, so there is no problem getting alcohol. The only con is that the drinks are small and expensive, but they are served by the nicest, cutest bartenders. If you are looking for a highly energized, loud, fun, crowded dance club this is the place for you. Patrons dance, watch drag shows, and make friends with other patrons. Have Fun!

Play is so much even if you are straight! I loved the shows and the people there are incredibly nice. They monitor the underage drinking very carefully and the dance floor is really cool! I made some cool friends and had alot of fun at this place. As a straight man I can still say I'll be going back.

Do not use your credit card! I was over charged not only for my drinks but, an additional 25.00 charge! Also my friend was abused my the female impersonator. The entertainer verbally blasted my friend bringing her to tears. He did not let up and kept going back to her with snide comments that were just plain mean. She did nothing to deserve this and basically paid the $10.00 cover to be abused. The cover is too high and they rip you off. Dance floor is nice. Too bad management doesn't control their staff's bad behaviors.

I like play ok, but it is still not the great experienc that Connections use to be. We need to keep it going for sure but we need a way to bring back the atmosphere and crouds that we use to have at Connections. What happened to all of the people that use to go there? The shows are good but need more showroom seating and Regine Phillips would be helpful. I will keep going To play from time to time , but not every week like I use to go out.

On separate occasions my bar tender has padded both the check and their tips. Play is one of the most fun places to go to in Nashville, but pay close attention to prices. Prices can change depending on bartender and tips can be inflated if card is left on a tab. Have fun but don't let the fun make you careless like I was.

I'm afraid I have to agree with some of the comment from other folks. This place is great your first couple of times but the luster quickly wears off. I'm willing to bet that the attitude that some of the staff has is because so much of the crowd is younger and inexperienced. I'm mean, c'mon. Fluctuating drink prices, they still don't take cards and they don't run tabs. Who does that anymore? Not to mention the power-drunk staff and management. They know that most of these folks will come back because there is nothing like it in town.
The ATM in the lobby isn't a convienience, it's an eyesore. It's something you would expect to see at some trashy laundrymat. I've had several folks tell me that the scene (regular patrons) rotates about every 8-10 months. With the entertainment (drag shows) I can see why. The featured perfomers are nice (brought in from the outside). The regulars have become complacent and lazy. The entire show is spent walking from one dollar to the next. That's not a show, it's voluntary robbery. When they aren't doing that they are milking over-priced drinks from the new-comers.
If it's your first time, bring a roll of cash. You'll need it. Oh, and then you'll need some for the drinks. But be careful, don't drop and break your plastic cup. For the occasional visitor, it's probably fine. As for the corp group that SUSTAINS this place, you won't get change until you demand it. And, by the way, the music on the dance side is FABULOUS!!

My friends and I drove into Nashville all the way from Miami, and we wanted to go out to a fun place on our first night in. Unfortunately, we didn't read the reviews of this place to well and decided on Play. First off, we asked one of the bartenders for a breakdown of their prices for shots, but when we actually ordered them from a different bartender, we were charged more. One of my friends told him that the other bartender had given us a different price, and all he had to say was "oh well, she's crazy." Um...okay. Now I really hope that not all Nashville locals are rude, but this one girl that crossed our paths next really was. She cut in between me and my friends while we were talking and continued to be nasty with us when we confronted her. She later threw her drink in my face, and my friends and I were the ones kicked out of the club. Fine. I understand that as the manager of a club, you have to regain control quickly, but this guy was extremely rude as well. He might as well have thrown the drink in my face himself (same goes for the owner). He took me outside and asked me what happened, but he was already threatening to have me arrested. Why even ask me what happened? He already made his mind up. That was totally uncool. Fortunately, he also kicked out the other girl, but we were definitely treated disrespectfully. They'll really lose a lot of clientele by treating people that way, accusing them and kicking them out AND overcharging them for drinks at the bar. They were acting all drunk with power. Why? I don't know. Their club was NOT up to par with any of the clubs we've been to in other cities. They could use some tips. The manager stopped threatening to have me arrested when I mentioned I had been experienced with promoting for gay/lesbian events in Miami. Ha, small fry! Anyway, if you want to be treated like a human being and get good service, DO NOT go to Play.
I hope all of Nashville is not like that. It really wasn't a good first impression.

Cons: horrible service, rude management, overcharging bartenders

I have to agree with the previous reviewer. Very shady billing practices indeed. I learned my lesson once from them and will certainly not be back. I live in a major U.S. city and travel the world, and I must say drinks at this place are priced on par with the world's finest cities. Too bad this place most certainly is not. If you want expensive drinks in plastic cups go right ahead.

I have been to Play many times and never really had a problem until last Wednesday night. The bartender let a random person put drinks on my tab that he assumed was with me. When my tab was $70 instead of like $30, I disputed the charges. Oscar, the manager, told me ?Our bartenders don?t make mistakes.? And ?Next time, you?ll need to be at the bar to authorize the drinks?. So basically, he made it out to be my mistake that Leonard, the bartender, put someone else?s drinks on my tab. One individual in my party was overserved and I had to get them home, so I signed the receipt and left. I got Joe Brown?s (owner) phone number and decided I would get it cleared up the next day.
Joe Brown said ?Well, I asked the bartender and he says he didn?t do anything wrong so there?s nothing I can do?. He also couldn?t provide me with an itemized ticket which means, I was overcharged regardless. Joe advised me to dispute the charges with my bank and I will. But I wanted everyone to know to watch out for these bartenders. Apparently, they have been advised to overserve you and fraud you as well. I have a feeling it works all too often.

Pros: Drag show, fun people, good music

Cons: Poor service, rude staff, unprofession staff

Play was the first club I had ever been to in my life, and it was amazing. Being gay of course in Nashville is very hard...very conservative area of the country with the bible belt and homo-hating rednecks...but play is like an oasis in the desert. The drag shows are the best I've ever seen. The music is good house, trance and techno. Don't expect to hear a lot of top 40 while you are there, but maybe some popular song remixed to a techno beat. Clean and cool inside, Saturday nights are the most crowded but even then there's plenty of room to dance and move around comfortably. Modern decor with good lights and fog in the dance bar. It is a solid mixture of straights and gay men (and some women), but don't be surprised to find gay-oriented events every week. Bartenders are super-friendly, and good at what they do. I go to college in Massachusetts now, right outside of Boston, and I haven't been able to find a place quite like Play. So if you're in Nashville, or you live there and are tired of the usual, check it out.

Cons: Parking can be a hassle

I went to Play for the first time last Saturday, and I had a blast. The drag show was surprisingly excellent, and I don't even like drag! I was happy to see a mixed homo/hetero crowd, from 18-year-olds up to older guys and gals. The atmosphere is very cool with a spacious dance floor and several bars. The bartenders were very friendly, as well. I was there from 11 till closing at 3, and I wasn't bored ONCE! It is really a fun place for anyone.

Pros: Atmosphere, drag show, clientele

Cons: Parking, high cover for under 21 ($15)

Well, I'm not sure when these people that left those NASTY reviews went to PLAY, but when I went a couple of weeks ago I had the BEST time of my life!!!! A bar from the 1970's?? Well, ummm....hardly....PLAY is one of the BEST bars in Nashville for a number of reasons...actually, I think it tops out with one of the BEST bars I have ever been to...from the friendly and HOTT bartenders, to the outstanding drag show, to the energetic atmosphere...oh, and did I mention the HOT bartenders :) ...PLAY is one of the HOTTEST BARS of 2007 in my opinion...To be honest, you would be CRAZY to not stop by and check it out when you are in NASHVILLE...I guarentee you will want to go back for MORE...and for those who choose to bash it...well, I'm guessing you are just JEALOUS that no one paid you any attention there! :)

Play is the place if you're hot for drag queens and twinks with a sprinkling of Vandy girls, and the occasional straight dude hoping to get lucky or out for some free drinks. Someone said here that Play has a "private balcony overlooking the dance floor." Dude, that's not a private balcony, it's a raised area with a bar.

Pros: They spent some money on the place

Cons: Same old...same old

Another cruisy gay bar, straight out of the 1970's. Drag queens lip synch, pretty shirtless boys dance, lonely old men watch in despair. Finally, Nashville has caught up with New York City, circa 1978. Wake me up when it's over.

Overall I suppose it was a cool place. However, their bartender(s) suck. When I questioned him on why I was being charged $25.00 for two shots of tequila- dude got pissed. Snatched up the drinks and told me that he wasn't going to serve us anylonger. It took a really nice guy (a friend of another bartender) to explain that dude was going to charge me $10.00 bucks a drink-b/c he can and the extra $5.00 was b/c he was having to take the time to run my credit card. Suck boy... was mad b/c I questioned his actions-and also b/c someone was taking the time to explain. He actually threatened to call the police b/c I was wanting to know why I was being charged this ungodly amount for two shots. I won't recommend it to any of my gay/lesbian friends. Word of mouth is the best advertisment.

The Play Club is great place for Gay, BI, Lesbian, and Straight people. There is very more neat place. It would be nice add building/room because many people like go there. I am very proud of Todd and Joey. They want to make some people to be happy and satisfied at their bar.
