After reading some of the reviews, I was leary of going to the Stage Stop. But go we went. I made a reservation for my wife and I. It took 30 minutes to seat us (as we were told). We used the time to enjoy a walk about the historic building and the upper floors. What a history!
Our server, Rita, had us seated across from the grill. Our meal consisted of a bread dish and onion soup, followed by a delicous salad (not just lettuce and some tomatoes!) with three coices of dressing. I had the Porterhouse and lobster tail while my wife had the Filet mignon. Both steaks were cooked as odered, and were they good! And nice and thick! The potatoe was all it is bragged up to be. I tried to eat it all, but had to get a take home box. And Rita was such an attentive waitress. After telling her it was our first visit, she was more than happy to explain the menu and answer the many questions we had. We are more than happy with our dining experience, and look forward to visiting again soon. We know our kids (adults) are gonna love this place.

My husband and I have been coming to Stage Stop since we were children, for the last 40+ years. We celebrate my birthday and my husband's birthday here every year. Tonight we went to we celebrate our 10th Anniversary - what a disappontment, WE WILL NOT BE BACK.
we know there is no atmoshere, it is very loud, but we forgive these points because of sentimentality and usually good food. The dinner started with a drink so weak my husband had to go back to the bar to have it remade. I had lobster tail and he had the strip steak and lobster tail on the side, Our bill was 85.00 before tip and the lobster was fairly mushy and my husband's steak was mediocre. 1/3rd of it waa brought home for my son's dog. Raise your prices before stooping to serve this quality.
We have had some dinners that were better than others, but we have never left Stage Stop in total disgust. If you close within the year I would not be a all surprised. What a shame.

Don't waste your time or money visiting this place. Our server was very nice...but that was it. Steak was not cooked as ordered and VERY tough. We decided to just call it a night and not wait for another meal. If you can believe it...they charged for the salad and potato. VERY UNHAPPY Experience. Would never recommend to anyone.

After reading the negative reviews I decided to go back to the Stag Stop which my family and I have visited on and off for the past 25 years. Much to my surprise, it was even better than I remembered. I don't know if it was because of negative reviews or a slow down of business, but it was really good. If you are expecting a Chicago or even Milwaukee trendy restaurant look elsewhere. This is just a good old fashioned supper club. I took my 84 year old mother who just wanted a good value meal for a good price. Where else can you get two perfectly grilled lobster tails (almost a pound) with all the fixings for $30? We got a great simple salad, huge baked potato, roll, bread sticks (can't get them anymore) and perfectly prepared tails. Not to mention, great cocktails and a nice glass of wine. The wait staff was efficient and pleasant. For goodness sake, give this local place a try - I promise you will not be disappointed - unless you are too hoity toidy to enjoy a good meal at a good value.

This restaurant is very smoky, dark, cramped and was not a pleasant dining experience at all.
It cost $100 for four people that didn't even drink! We were told that the wait would be 25 minutes and it was almost an hour.

We have been regulars at the Stage Stop for over 40 years. Their consistency has always been excellent. However, it doesn't take a genius to realize the quality has drastically changed! Recently, we brought several relatives from out of town to impress them with a good steak. It turned out to be a huge embarrassment. Every steak tasted like it had been in a freezer for 6 months. When we spoke to the waitress about our problem, she seemed to care less about any of our comments!!
Needless to say, we were out of there!! That was March of 2009, and we will never go back. It looks like we are not the only ones, as the parking lot has been empty everytime we go past on our way to Twin Oaks....1 block to the southwest...the steak may be 3 or 4 dollars more, but it is worth it!!!
Wake up Stage Stop!!! Bring back the quality you were always known for!!!!

We took my mother-in-law out to the Stage Stop for her birthday dinner, and we were very unimpressed with our experience. With a reservation at 7pm, we did not get seated until 7:45. Our server took another 10-15 minutes to greet our table, and a further 15 minutes to bring us our first round of drinks & finally take our order. In a party of six, 3 of the steaks were massively over-cooked, and we could not find our server to voice a complaint. We waited over 20 minutes for refills on sodas. The atmosphere was incredibly noisy & uncomfortable, due to the fact that we were all sandwiched together in a huge open room with about a foot in between other tables. This restaurant came highly recommended to us by several friends, but we will most definitely NOT be returning.

Not sure what all the negative press is about here. This is a fantastic place FOR THE PRICE. If you want the most tender steak and intimate setting, head out to Gibsons and pay $35 to $40 for a nice expensive cut you pick out yourself. Stage Stop actually IS an old Stage Stop with the original tiny rooms for the riders to crash in still upstairs. It's like eating in a museum. When you walk in you can see steaks and lobster being cooked over original huge old fireplaces. This is not an elegant, romantic, restaurant, so you'll be disappointed if you go there for that purpose because it is crowded!! There is no rule restricting kids, that I know of. I have seen kids in there before. There may be no kiddie menu but too bad. Split a meal between your kids or give them some of yours... there will be plenty of food. You could also leave your kids at home because the tables are close to each other and if your children become bored or disruptive you'll feel embarrassed to have them disturbing others while they eat. You won't enjoy yourself and will ruin everyone else's time too. The food is terrific and reasonably priced.. that's why it's always packed! Is it a plain lettuce salad...You bet!! The key is the homemade dressings especially the Blue Cheese which is good enough to eat on it;s own. The rolls are small break and bake style rolls... The key... the fresh butter you slather on them!! They melt in your mouth, so don't eat too many of them because the steaks are huge and thick. I have not ever had my steak over or under cooked, however, I'm sure this happens as it has happened to me before at some world class steak houses too. Yet, it hasn't happened to me at Stage Stop. The lobster tail increased in price now to $9.95. It used to be $6.95. It isn't a huge $30.00 lobster tail, but if you want that, go to Chinns Crabhouse in Deerfield. Still it is a bigger lobster tail than you get at Red Lobster for $20.00. Everyone raves about the baked potato. It is truly amazing because the butter and sour cream are fresh dairy. By the time you have eaten a steak, lobster, rolls, salad and potato, you are so stuffed you can't possibly take another bite of food. You've probably spent around $30.00 to $40.00 per person, but you can do it for much less if you get chops or a chopped steak. If you go while it is crowded and the service is slow, you can spend time wandering around on the second floor where the old pool table is covered with bills and receipts for travel, liquor and other store purchase from back in the early days, then head up a rickety narrow staircase to the old hotel rooms. These tiny rooms are no bigger than a closet would be today and have original furniture in them including painful looking straw mattresses. Yikes. None of us would have survived it. So, realistically, I didn't rate this place world class because it isn't supposed to be world class. It is supposed to be a laid back, down home, flash from the past, nostalgic eatery with basic delicious food at a great price in a casual atmosphere. The charm factor is 5 stars and the food is 5 stars. If you don't want to deal with the crowds, come early on a Saturday afternoon. (They also have specialty ice cream drinks here but I have never had room left over to try one because the meal is so filling.)

Wilmot Stage Stop is a place to go have a hearty meat and potato dinner... The steak was very tender, the potato is amazing, and why not add a tail to the order!! Updates for other reviewers: They DO take credit cards. The menu is limited, but why add more junk if the original is this good.Kids menu? Don't take your brats to a steakhouse, get a sitter and have an adult night out... you are also ruining our night when you bring children to an adult restaurant.Ultimately I wish I lived closer to the Stage Stop, I would get to go more than a couple times a year. This restaurant has left a mark on me, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

There were three of us dining. We sat in a crowded, open room with the tables very close together. The menu was limited to steaks and chops with a little shrimp; a baked potato and salad came with the meals. Diner one chose a sirloin steak, two had lamb chops and I had pork chops. The bread basket had 4 plain warm buns and a few crackers. The salad was plain lettuce with a bit of tomato; the three dressing choices were homemade. One said his steak was so tough he could hardly chew it; our chops were only average. Our baked potatoes included a huge mound of butter on top and sour cream. We expected better quality meat and a larger menu for the price.

I am suggesting that EVERYONE try their baked potatoes! They put so much butter and sour cream on them, it's delicious. Their menu selection is VERY SMALL (maybe about eight items- and no kids menu)! I only go there maybe once a year just because I only feel like steak around once a year. They do not take credit cards which in this day and age is almost impossible. They stick to cash and I believe check.

I have been coming here for forty years and ALWAYS enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, the specialty ice cream drinks and let's not forget the butter, which is the same size as the potato. I have brought friends and neighbors here more times than I can remember and everyone has always left happy, full and wanting to return.

PROS: excellent service, great food, nostalgic upper level
CONS: tables too close together in the main dining room

I've been here as a kid and a few times as an adult. Some of the local folks rave about this place. I have no idea why. I'm only to assume they've never been to a good restaurant.

The building is an old stage stop. The main floor in the restaurant and the top floor is the old rooms when it used to be a stage stop. Ok, this part is neat just to see. You can look through the glass window on the locked doors into the rooms that folks used to sleep in back in the day of horse and carriage. You can see the bed, table and a few other items in each room. There is not to much to it, but it's neat to see.

As far as the food goes, everyone comes for the filet and lobster tail and the baked potatoe with all the butter. First of all the tail is tiny. I expected something a little bigger than what we were served. The tables are really close to each other so you can hear everyone's conversation. It could be decorated so nicely inside and yet it's so plain to look at.

Be prepared to pay by cash or check, they don't accept credit cards.
