I've been going to aveda for as long as I can remember now. They have reasonable prices, and I've usually gotten free massages while I get my hair cut. I will never go to another place to get my hair done!

Great service!! The (minor) wait is worth it! I am always a little hesitant to have someone cut my hair (especially students) since my genes encode for the most unmanageable curly hair known to mankind. A series of horrific haircuts in my youth has led to a general distrust of hairdressers. Aveda Institute has been my saving grace, as I've never experienced a bad haircut from any of the students. When considering applying a relaxer to my hair, I had an opportunity to talk with a non-student consultant. I was appreciative that she was honest with me and didn't try talking me into doing something that would have ultimately caused more damage than good. The service has only improved over the years I've been a customer. It's almost ridiculous how much they pamper you for such reasonably priced haircuts.

I have been going to Aveda for as long as I've been in Minneapolis and will continue to support this institute. Oh, and the $11.50 haircut with the student discount is AWESOME. Thanks for making me feel fabulous every time I step out the door!

I've had mixed experiences at Aveda. The first time was fine-just got a trim. The next time I tried a cut and swirl (a few highlights around the face). After 2 hours of the sylist combing my hair and taking little snips off, the instructor pretty much did my whole haircut in 10 minuts. So, still not a bad deal. The last 2 times I've had a fabulous student named Jessica, who is very professional. You have to know what you want and make sure to communicate that up front. They pull out hair color samples and you agree to it. I plan to keep going for hair.

I've also had a good facial there.

My only gripe is the pedicures. They don't have typical massage chairs, and they don't even use water. It's basically like paying someone $20 to literally paint your toenails. I paid the extra $5 to get a mask with steamy towels, and that was the best part. But, overall, I was not impressed. I could have painted my own toes. I would spend the extra money for a real pedicure...and I'm cheap! :)

It took several minutes for the receptionist to even acknowledge me, and once she did, she didn't respond to my greeting, she simply told to sign a paper and sit down until someone called my name. I was almost convinced that I'd walked into a doctor's office or train station by mistake.

After waiting in a crowded waiting area with uncomfortable seating, my name was yelled out by a young man with terrible personal hygiene and even worse manners. He was polite at first, but once he began cutting my hair he jerked my head around and would show irritation when I didn't keep my head in the position he wanted.

His styling was sloppy and he didn't straighten my hair even after I requested it. His instructor had to fix almost the entire hair cut and she didn't even let him touch my bangs. I asked to see the back of my hair but no one offered me a mirror to do so. Thankfully, there were no surprises once I got home.

Once the awkward haircut was over, it got even more awkward when he led me on a detour through their store section and filled a basket with the products he'd used, bringing it to the register. I politely refused, but still felt pressured to by them. When I asked earlier about their tip policy he said that they didn't accept them but he still waited expectantly when the receptionist asked if I wanted money back ,while I was paying with a card, for "my student." I felt pressured and embarrassed so I gave him an overly generous tip. Then again, any tip would have been overly generous.
I understand that these are students, and I also understand that it is a learning experience, but they should know how to treat their customers with common courtesy.

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Terrible customer service

It takes about two hours to get a haircut here, because the student is still learning and needs to check in with his/her instructor a few times during the cut. It's worth it, though--it only costs $15, and the last two haircuts I got there were the best I got in years. The students listen to exactly what the customer wants.

I had my haircolor done by student Jazzmin- a budding haircolor expert. She was a bit reserved but I LOVED my cute new reddish and gold color. She knew just what I wanted before the Instructor came over and she needed no help. I'm coming back to her before she graduates!

My mother and I went to Aveda this past Thursday. I had Hannah to my hair. My mother had Samone. We had the most wonderful time there. We were treated so well. Our hair looked beautiful. We could not get over how great we looked for such a great price. We went into the shop afterwards and looked at some products. There was wonderful tea to drink from Aveda the whole time.

Thank you Hannah and Samone for such a wonderful experience. You definitely will see us back there again.

The Insittue is such a fun place to go either alone or with friends and family. The people watching, services from head to toe, free tea, free shoulder massage and unbelievable prices are exactly what the Dr. orders to beat off stress. LOVE IT and go back every month.

Got an 80 minute massage today for $55+tax-which is a great deal. I think the student's name was Dana, she was nice and professional. the massage was just as good as any ive had elsewhere, better in some aspects. It was full body, which i wasnt quite prepared for, but it was nice. Unfortunately, less time was spent on my always painful back because of this, but thats not really anyone's fault. There was hot towels, neck stretching and even that fun karate-chopping you see them do on tv. ive never had any of that stuff done at any other massage place, so that was neat. The only unpleasantness was that there was no signage in the building to direct me where i needed to go, so i wandered around looking lost on each floor i came to, i actually ran into another girl who was lost looking for the same place as me.there was tons of students milling around everywhere and i cant help but feel like they were a little snooty, walking straight into me as i descended the stairs & whatnot..also,the room i was in was right by the bathroom,so everytime someone used the hand dryer i could hear it and every person walking by chatting.which wasnt exactly soothing, but hey,its cheap.
despite those pretty superficial drawbacks, the whole thing was great, i will go back sometime for relaxation, but maybe seek a more specialized massause for my back pain in the meantime.

This was my 2nd experience getting highlights and cut at the Aveda Institute. My 1st experience was great. My 2nd experience was outstanding! My stylist, Sara C, was professional, listened to exactly what I requested, and nailed it! I love my highlights and cut, she was very efficient and instead of taking the 5 hours (that I was anticipating), I was in and out in under 3 hours. And on a Saturday, to boot. Which is about how long it takes my regular stylist to do the same thing. The price was 3 times LESS than my regular stylist as well. I will definitely be returning for my next touch up...and I'll be requesting Sara C for sure!

I work and live in the neighborhood. I loved Aveda. I would use them all the time when I wanted a facial or cut and color. I thought it was great . I liked that for a nominal fee I could help the students with hands on training. Sometimes it turned out bad but, most of the time every thing was great. They were always professional.
We usually call for take out at lunch but recently I started bringing some of my clients to the restaurants right in the area and during lunch hour. I see the students out in their black uniforms and name badges and they are drinking booze. I just figured that they were done for the day until last week on my way to the bathroom I heard one of them say to their server " We'll be right back, we have to go clock in." Then they came back, finished their drinks and food, paid and left.
It make me wonder if everytime I've had a bad haircut it's because the student tied one on during their lunch break. I will not pay to be some drunk 21 year olds guinea pig ever again.

I went to the institute after getting a $250 quote from my regular salon for a corrective color. I was worried that letting students perform the procedure was a bit risky but decided to do it anyways and I am so pleased with the result! The instructor paired the original student I was assigned to with another student and both students worked so hard to achieve the look I had requested. The instructor checked back several times throughout the day and was very attentive. The students worked through their lunches/breaks and did not complain once about having to process my hair multiple times! I think my regular stylist would have complained about having to work as hard as the students did! The end result was just what I had asked for and at 1/4 the cost, I was so excited I have been referring all of my friends there for colors. I have been to various "beauty schools" and do think that your experience depends on the specific school as well as the student. They ARE students and some may lack the professional courtesy (not the students that I worked with!) that a stylist with years of experience may have so it can be a toss up but I would highly recommend the institute if you are looking for a new color, cut or just a fun style. The only downside was that I was there for most of the day whereas my regular stylist probably could have completed the process in less time, the overall savings and experience was well worth the extra time!

I've been going to the Aveda Institute for years and have never left with a bad hair cut. Sure, a few times they've taken a little more off than I wanted, but in the end, I've always been pretty happy with the outcome.

For $14, who can complain too much? I agree with another poster about not leaving tips though. These kids are in school from 9-5 five days a week so it's not like they can have much of a job outside of school. They are learning their trade by working, much like a person gets an internship before going off to the real world. So please give them at least 15% of the cost of your service! You would have paid at least that much at a regular salon anyway.

---VERY busy, no personal care
---I received an awful haircut--she cut off 4 INCHES more than I asked
--went darker on my color rather than lighter and refused to fix it.
---I spent 6 HOURS at the salon for a cut and color

Even though it is less expensive than other places, it is definitely not worth it!

Know yourself before going to the Institute! Ask yourself the following questions: 1) Do I have a large chunk of time on my hands? 2) Could I sit in one place for several hours at a time? 3) Do I believe that "it's just hair and it will grow back"? If you answered "yes" to those questions, the Institute is a great way to save money on a haircut. But if you don't like unprofessional students stopping your service to walk over to another student to gossip and giggle, this is not the place for you.

I was a little nervous about going to the institute after reading the reviews. My appointment pretty much started on time and the staff was super friendly. After moving to the Twin Cities a couple of years ago, I have struggled finding a good hair dresser. I know that the best graduate from the Aveda Institute so I decided to give the school a try. My appointment lasted about 4 hours but the service was incredible and the outcome of my cut and color was great. I know that I will return. The students at the institute do a wonderful job.

My friend and I are college students and were in Mpls on a whim and looking to do something to our hair. I booked a cut, she booked a color, arriving early so she could have a patch test done @ 12:45pm she wasn't seen until nearly 2pm while I was taken for my 1:15pm haircut at 12:40pm.

The Institute is huge, the student works closely with you and their instructor to make sure everyone is happy and going well but my haircut took over 2 hours, my friends color nearly 4 hours. For $14 I got one awesome haircut complete with a scalp/neck/back massage, shampoo, and 'finishing touch.' If you've got time and patience I HIGHLY suggest a visit. Not to mention Aveda products smell so good.

I LOVE going here to get my hair cut. However, I bought a 7-service package for $99 and was extremely disappointed with the pedicure. The gal acted like she was high - confused, tired and sloppy. She wasn't a bad person, just really disappointing with pedicures. However, I did get an excellent facial. Service is really iffy here. But for the price, I won't complain too much. Just make sure if you do complain, it's before you leave the chair.

I went to Aveda for a pedicure and left with a bloody toe.

I had my first pedicure recently at the Aveda Institute and left unhappily and in pain. The pedicurist was friendly and sweet, but didn't respond when I repeatedly told her she was hurting me. She was pushing back the cuticles on my feet with a sharp instrument and I repeatedly pulled my feet away and told her that is was painful. Finally, she stopped scraping and started trimming. Unfortunately, she cut the nail bed of my toe and I looked down to see that my toe was bleeding. I was hoping for a relaxing experience, but certainly didn't get it. I would definitely pay a professional in the future!

I had a facial here the other day. WOW. I've been to local salons and spas in years past, but I've rarely been impressed, until now. I was a little scared to go to a school at first until my friend convinced me to. She had recommended a girl she saw the week before to me and I made an apt with her. When I got there I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was warm and welcoming and my facialist was amazing. I have had facials before at other places but it was my first time at the institue. I was greeted promptly and led into my room (everyone is in the same room with curtains dividing off into smaller rooms.) The esthetician asked me about my skin and did a thorough consultation. She recommended some products from my specific skin type and got started. Throughout the facial she told me what products she was using and why. Since I'm not very savvy about skincare It was very interesting to hear everything she had to say. It was so relaxing I fell asleep halfway through and woke up after I caught myself snoring! After the facial one of the teachers came in and checked if everything was ok and to see if I had any questions. The best part was the hot towel and the tingly massage oil she put on my back after I was done. I was in heaven when we were finished. She walked me out to the store and helped me pick out the products she had recommended for my skin, gave me her card, and thanked me for coming to visit. It was literally the best facial I've had in years, and I will most surely be coming back.

I have used the Aveda Institute several times, and while I am always fairly satisfied with the haircuts, the desk staff are so rude it's unbelievable. Every time I call in I get someone snide who has absolutely no interest in helping me. My favorite quote this time "I've been doing this job for 6 years, and I know you can't do that" which was funny .. . since I had the same service every 6 weeks for the last year! So watch out when you are calling in . . .liable to get a right beastie on the phone.

My favorite quote this time "I've been doing this job for 6 years, and I know you can't do that" which was funny .. . since I had the same service every 6 weeks for the last year! So watch out when you are calling in . . .liable to get a right beastie on the phone.

Pros: Cheap cuts of decent quality

Cons: Desk and phone staff are rude, ignorant, and unprofessional

.

I have not used any hair services at Aveda Institute, so this review will focus mainly on manicures, pedicures, facials, and massages. This is a school, so all the services are performed by students. Becaue they are still learning, and are being checked often by an instructor, most things will take longer than in another salon. If you have your PDA scheduled down to the minute, this might not be the place for you. But if you can relax over a cup of herbal tea, a sandwich, or a bakery treat, you will be rewarded with a better-than-reasonable price for the services. I have found that I need to explain in more detail what I like/want/need (especially when it comes to massage); I can't rely on a fully-trained professional to figure it out for me. Some students have a hesitant touch when doing facials, pedicures, or massage; but they often become more confident throughout the appointment. The schedule is sometimes challenging and unpredictable; appointments are only taken for certain times on certain days, and I have often had to wait for 15-30 minutes after my scheduled time. But the space offers such great people watching that I generally don't mind. This setting is not for everyone; it will never run as smoothly as a salon or spa staffed by fully trained professionals. But if you approach it with a go-with-the-flow attitude, you will thoroughly enjoy it.

PROS: Excellent prices, generally good skill level among students
CONS: Schedule is somewhat random; expect delays.

When this place was owned by Horst, if the wait time was too long, they would hand out coupons for free services. Now that he doesn't own it, I have waited for over an hour for a booked appointment. Every so often, they misplace my ticket, and I have to go to the counter to beg to get my hair cut that day. The last time I went, the student couldn't do subtle highlights, and I had to leave with a white streak in my brown hair. Even a return visit couldn't fix it. Used to be the teacher would care. I ended up going to a professional salon to get it fixed. What started as a bargain turned into a expensive repair job.

PROS: Low price
CONS: Poor service

A nice way to spend some time being pampered at an increadible discount is to check out the Aveda Institutes student services. They have ridiculously low priced services from hair to massage to make up to nails--down right spoiled!

It can take longer than a regular salon as the service is provided by students but they are very good and well supervised. The slow pace isn't all bad though- take the time to relax!

I was terrified, but after being seriously underwhelmed at some of the "big name, big attitude" salons in the area, I decided to give the institute a try. They are extremely busy but manage to handle everyone in a courteous and efficient way. I am picky about my hair and had a complicated color request and my student did a beautiful job. For under $50, I walked out of there looking great. Similar looks have cost me $200+. If you are brave enought to trust a student, it is worth it. Having an experienced instructor there for help and final approval helps too. Be prepared to spend a long time there (my appointment took 4 hours), they are still learning, after all. Will definitely go back!

Pros: Value, Great Hair, Unpretentious

Cons: Time Investment

.

Best for hair cuts. Students want to please you and the teachers check the cut so 99 percent of the time you will leave happy. Though it's cheaper to get your hair colored here, beware of complicated requests. These are students, after all, and don't yet know their trade.

Pros: cheap, deli

Cons: slow, new stylist each time

The Aveda Institute offers services from students at a discounted price. It is very busy, very fun but also very relaxing in the massage and facial areas. One thing I noticed was for how busy it is things are handled in a relatively smooth manner. The wait time may be a little extra but they are students in training doing their best. The staff also handles the large volume of people very well. So check it out, it is very fun and affordable but don't be in a hurry, slow down, relax, people watch and enjoy it!

I always go to Aveda Institute for full foils. Never a problem, I am always happy with the service I receive. The cost is of course a savings too!

Also, just a note about tipping, I always see clients just say goodbye to the student and leave NO tip! How can you receive such great service at such a low price and leave nothing for this person? 15-20% of your service charge is the least you could do for these students? You tip that to the person who brings your drinks, why not the person who makes you beautiful?

Pros: Innovative Techniques, Supervised by Teacher, Works with your style

Cons: Waiting, Length of appointment

.

I have had several different services performed here and have never been disappointed! Because the work is done by students, it does take longer but, it is well worth it. I always leave feeling like I was pampered and well taken care of. The prices are great and the work is supervised by instructors. I would highly recommend this place. The products are high quality but pricey.

PROS: individual attention
CONS: can take longer than a non teaching salon

Having recently moved here from the Rhode Island, I didn't know where to get my hair done. My husband (who grew up here) suggested the Aveda Institute, he's been going there since they were in a smaller location. I was a little uneasy about putting my hair in the hands of students. I was amazed at the size of everything; the building, the number of students and the amount of other people there willing to put their trust in students. The environment was exciting and buzzing, a real eye opener on a Saturday @ 8:30 in the morning. It took a little longer than it normally does, but my husband told me to expect that because they are students. I felt the student operator was knowledgable and confident. I'm sure she got an A+ that day. My hair turned out great! The supervisor even commented on how nice it looked!

I have hair that is very hard to manage. I went to aveda with my sister who made me go. I recieved the BEST hair cut i have ever had. Yes many different people had there go at it, but in the end it turned out great. I did wait for a while, but it is really worth what you pay. It was the least expensive hair cut I have had in a long while.

I have gone here several times and been happy with the outcome! To be able to get a massage that doesn't cost a fortunte is wonderful and very relaxing. Haircuts and color are a fraction of the cost. However, they turn out very similar to a regular salon. We have always been happy leaving there. The only downside is that it can take a little longer than most places because the students have to be more thorough.

aveda institute is a great way of getting "discounted" services from trained aveda-students. all the students are highly-professional and wonderful to work with. they offer everything from massage to facials to haircuts to pedicures. while the time commitment is long (b/c students are learning), you can to commit at least 1+ hour...but it's worth the price! they even offer a little counter for food where you get grab a meal while waiting!

My wife & I scheduled appointments at the same time and had very different experiences.

Mine: I was in the chair 10 minutes after my scheduled time for a hair cut & foil. My stylist was competent, confident and quick if a bit smug. If I paid full price at a salon, I would have been happy with her work

My wife: She waited almost 1 hour after the appointed time to get a stylist for a cut. The stylist was very tentative and actually needed the instructor to finish. My wife spent over 1 hour in the chair for a simple cut and ended up with a big chunk of hair missing from the back of her head.

Wow..this is a different place. They have students doing everything (that is why prices are so cheap). They offer a variety of services like haircuts ($13.00) and massages. It's a great place but your taking a chance :) I have been here a couple of times and don't mind it, so far my luck has been good.

Great place for a cheap haircut, $13.00. Includes a head massage, shampoo and blowdry and style. The instructors always go over the haircuts to make sure they were done correctly. They have other services available at discounted prices also. They have a lifestyle store if you need to pick up some products for you hair, face or body. They also have an a deli with a healthy selection of salads and sandwiches. How do I know all of this? I went to school there.

PROS:
CONS: Sometimes a long wait for your haircut and to find a parking spot.

Upstairs, away from the constant buzzing of those receiving new hair styles, the 3rd floor offers a lovely Environmental shop which takes the appointments for Facials and Massages. It's most serence compared to the ground floor and the services are reflectively peaceful as well. The 4th floor, where the massages and aquatic spa services are provided is the best of all. You'll find the instructors very helpful and the students truly willing to listen and please the customer.

Everytime I'm back home from college - I ALWAYS get a very rude receptionist whenever I call.

It never fails. Somebody in charge their either has a bad attitude and it's rubbing off on the workers, or everybody there are you-know-whats!

Owners take notice. If it happens again, I'm not coming back.

I got not only my worst haircut of my life (asked for layering 2 inches up, started with past shoulder length hair, ended up with a Carol Brady that took a year to grow out), but also the worst pedicure--the girl doing it was talking to other people the entire time and reading every step from a card, not only that but she said she hated doing pedicures and did a terrible job. In both cases, no one checked their work.

Although the salon feels more like a cattle run then a spa, if you'd like to get quality service at low prices this is the place. The best part of the $11 haircut is that an instructor always checks to make sure the job was done right, and fixes it if not. I often walk out with a $40+ cut.
The salon is also a fun place for parties--i've seen several bachelorette and wedding parties.
This is also the route to take if you are nervous about certain salon treatments and want to test them out without a huge cash investment.

As another reviewer wrote.."I've spent $150.00 for the exact same facial at another salon"...Well, I've spent over 1,500.00 this year on the exact services at another salon/spa and for the money, I can book twice as many appointments and receive the same professional and courteous treatment as any day spa throughout the Twin Cities. I've incorporated the Institute's spa services into my chronic pain management program and have decreased my chronic pain med's in half! They've given me back a quality of life I forgot existed!

The last review is right on. If you have the time, this is a best buy for guys. I've been to the Institute 3 times, and had a good haircut all 3. It does take them a long time however. For me at least 2 hours seems to be the average for just a cut. You can't beat $15 for a haircut, not to mention the head massage which in my opinion is worth the $11 alone. And if you need "product", make sure you take your stylist with you to the salon shop as I believe they get some $$$ out of it.

Also, there is a legend that Jimmy Hendrix played in the auditorium upstairs...

As a guy, Aveda is a no brainer. It is hands down the best value for people who like to be in a hip environment and aren't in too much of a rush.

Entering the building, the most unhip person (me) is made to feel hip with the buzzing atmosphere and 300+ attractive people (mostly females) all over the place.

For approx. the same cost as Cost Cutters or Great Clips ($11), you get a professional haircut and 10X the service. One takes a little risk, but you are a guy and the instructors stay close. The stylists have enough sense to ask if they are in anyway unsure of themselves.

Although my haircut took close to 2 hours, its was definitely worth it as the students and instuctors concentrated on doing a great job, providing amazing service.

Their ambiance and the whole building adds to the mystic. The prices are WONDERFUL and even though the students are still learning, if there was a

LOVE IT- Especially since I paid 130.00 for the same facial at a day spa- same exact facial, have learned my lesson.
