Located in the heart of Union Square, in a space that originally housed the Klepper collapsible kayak store, this is the original Heartland - the one that started it all. With a downtown location, outdoor sidewalk seating, and views of Union Square Park from its mezzanine, it's beloved by New Yorkers as a classic meeting spot for after-work drinks complemented by addictive bites such as our five-tier appetizer platter. Please note: we feature a different hand-crafted, cask-conditioned ale on the first Friday of every month at this location.

I must say I have to disagree with the reviewer who claimed waitresses were rude. My two friends and I arrived and were told about the seating regulations (which is acceptable, you need more space for dinner than for appetizers) we waited for 5 minutes and got a table at the lower level. The waitress was nice and attentive even when my friend who suffered a sudden drop in her BP lost consciousness, the manager helped carrying her to a couch, called ambulance, and refused to take neither a tip nor the pay for the tab (actually we drank only 1/3 of the samplings but finished the appetizers) even after my friend recovered and insisted on paying. We decided on the sampler and were so very pleased. The IPA was yucky, but I don't like any IPAs so that was not a surprise. Their light beer has king of a citrus taste to it. I was great. We went to Heartland Brewery today and 1st floor where the bar area is was packed with no where for us to sit. We saw a bunch of open seats upstairs so we went towards them. Before we got there a waiter asked us what type of food we intended to eat. We only wanted a few appetizers and a couple of beers since it was around 4:00 p.m. no where near dinner time. The rude waiter proceeded to tell us that we could only sit upstairs if we had a full dinner. There were no tables left downstairs. What is up with that? We were about to spend at least 50 dollars on drinks and appetizers. We left and will never come here again! We returned because they are one of the few dog-friendly bars in NY. What an improvement. The beer's still great. But now SO IS THE SERVICE.
