I was in Ann Arbor for a wedding and was given a recommondation to the Aveda Douglas J Salon. My friend suggested seeing Sandra . Making the appointment was easy and they even called a couple of days before to confirm.
I was right on time for my appointment, it is a large salon with lots of activity. One of the women at the front desk offered me something to drink and directed me to a waiting area. And there I waited and waited. After 15 minutes I went back up to the desk and asked how much longer it would be. It was a different woman and she seemed lost. Telling me I need to check in, I told her I already had showing her the cup of tea I was given now 20 minutes earlier. More typing on the computer and surprise ! there I am !
Sandra comes and gets me and off we go
Once pass the mess at the front desk eveything goes great, Head massage, lotion on my arms and hands and probably the best hair cut I have ever had. Sandra was great, she did not rush me even thought it was obivious she was going to be late for her next client.
Beautiful salon, great haircut and styling , but they need to get the front desk in order, It took me another 5 minutes at the end to pay for the hair and some shampoo i purchased.
So five stars for Sandra, one star for the salon

I have gotten haircuts around the World and , believe me, Leslie Rodrigues is the best ever. She has a more than professional clinic eye to tell you what your hair needs. Talent describes her amazing ability with the scissors, which I compare to a pencil in an artist's hands.
Definitely, Leslie Rodrigues is an artist.

After having some iffy experiences at the Douglas J Institute, I decided to try the Exchange. My highlights had gotten super blond over the summer and I wanted to get some lowlights to tone it down and break up the color. I made an appointment at the Exchange for a New Stylist (their lowest level) and it was fantastic. She was really helpful in selecting colors and did a great job. The highlights look really natural. Since she was the lowest level, it only cost about $56 which is only a little more expensive than at the Institute but you're getting much more consistent performance. I would definitely go back for color and may even get a haircut soon.

My only issue is their pricing scheme. It's relatively inexpensive if you go to a New Stylist but I think their highest level stylists are ridiculously overpaid. It's $80 for a Level 5. Granted I've never seen the result of such a haircut, but I wouldn't pay that at my salon back home!

All in all, I had a good experience. If you're looking for something a little more consistent than the Institute but don't want a huge price differential, I definitely recommend checking out the New Stylists at the Exchange.

I had a haircut with j and he seemed nice, but it was not nice when he cut off more than i asked for. he hardly talked the whole time and seemed very cold and in a hurry, and told me what to do. he is a higher level that they definitly talked him up, but unless iwant a buzz cut next time i will not be going to j.

Douglas J the school, its always a bit of a gamble. But at the Exchange there is a stylist named Scott. He is so great. He is so precise, and really seems like he will not stop until your cut is perfect. Also he gives me great ideas based on my face and personality. I go in, hang out, and leave with awesome hair. People stop me on the street and ask me where I get my hair done all the time! I'm sending all of my friends to him too!

Pros: Good Location, aaaaaawesome hair.

Cons: Some of the staff seems a little stuffy. They're always trying to sell me stuff. Scott only recommends what I really need.

I ended up at the Exchange when the student at the Aveda school called in sick and couldn't do my tint and highlight. The school was kind enough to send me to their professional salon a block away and pay the Aveda school rates. The colorist was fantastic. The only think I hated about the experience was the fact that the whole place is windows. I really don't like the idea of people walking around downtown A2 seeing me with foil on my head. Not loving that. Additionally, I wouldn't go back simply because the prices are much higher than at the school.

PROS: Quality products, talented stylists
CONS: Everyone in A2 can see you getting your hair done, parking, price
