There are many ships/boats, all with their own historical significances. I can't name all the ships at the top of my head but there's the Star of India and the Berkeley. They are great fun. They add a touch of historical nostalgia as a San Diegan. It's at such a good price too to see all of those ships/ boats. Aside from all the museum exhibition in, out, and around the ships, there's also the gift shops and the harbor for tourists. So even if you don't go on any of the ships, it's still really fun to walk along the shore and admire the boats from the outside. They are monumntal. They strike a sense of awe for children and adults alike. Definitely a good learning experience for the children.

PROS: Historical, Thought provoking, Fun, Along the harbor, Great for anyone
CONS: Smells like the harbor

The San Diego Maritime Museum is a great place to visit for kids and adults alike. They have many ships there that you can board and explore. There is even one 18th century Royal Navy Frigate thats anchored there that is amazing and takes you to a trip into the past. There is only one admission fee which allows you access to all the ships in the harbor.

The Maritime Museum is where the Star of India is located... and it consists of more boats that just that one...there's the Berkeley, the Californian, and more...I just can't name them. They've got excellent educational programs there, as well as just being able to stop in and tour the boat. I went on an overnight adventure on the Californian... it was incredible. The children learned about life during the Revoltionary War period. They were role playing as if they were young men (even the girls) who were taking to life on the boat in order to make a little money....they were really put to work... it was TERRIFIC and I highly recommend you take your child down and let them explore this treasure of San Diego.
