After Fort Benjamin Harrison closed in the mid 1990's, it was decided that much of the wooded area between the Golf Course and Fall Creek would become a State Park.

This is very near a thriving urban area but it really seems like a REAL state park. The outdoor amenities make it much more like a rural based park than an "in-town" one. That being said there are still enough things to do to keep the active suburbanite happy.

There are two lakes, Delaware and the Duck Pond but you have to park and walk. The Duck Pond is quite a hike (3/4 mile) on a (former) road. This road is auto-free making it ideal for hiking, biking roller blading and such. Fishing in Delaware Lake is nice, as they have two accessible wooden fishing piers.

There are two picnic grounds and a nature center, along with several hiking trails. They have prepared a hill for wintertime sledding.

Fort Harrison SP is located in Lawrence, Indiana. Take the 56th Street exit from I-465, east to Post Rd. Turn left/North on Post Road until it ends. Turn left into the park. It is open daily Dawn to Dusk.

PROS: Good location, quiet, good fishing
CONS: Dayuse only, so no camping
