Its a absolute waste of time and money. There are a few skeletons of prehistoric animals and some tacky models and thats it. For that, they charge a chunk of change. Its not worth it. Just take a look at the tar pits (which are again a disappointment) - its free.

As a Brit making a flying visit to the USA, I knew of the Tar Pits only having seen them in the film "Volcano", and I didn't have time to visit the museum, just the open air Tar Pits themselves. What a disappointment! There's very little to see, and anyway the tar itself appeared to be covered by a layer of water.

If, like me, you don't have time to visit the museum, don't bother with this one. There are plenty of far more interesting things to see and do in LA!

I agree, this has become a bit of a tourist trap in the line of all things L.A., but it is still very educational and worth a trip. They have some fine displays and give a great introduction into paleontology. The fake floating elephants outside can be a bit much, but do give you an idea of what it was like. The self guiding tour is enjoyable and I would definitely stop in!

The La Brea Tar Pits is a must stop location. It is, like most places in LA, a bit of a tourist trap. But the set up is amazing. Outside is a a self-guided walking tour around a massive tar pit with fake elephants floating around, but the place to really go is inside a small building on top of the hill behind the tar pits. There you will find an amazing exhibit on the history of the tar pits . It's filled with fossils and other items. Although there is street parking, it migh be easier to park in the lot on a weekday.

I highly recommend a stop at this place when visiting Los Angeles, as it was very imformative for us. We learned Brea means Tar in Spanish and Southern California was wetter and colder than it is now. Its so important to be able to learn the history of an area, so people can learn from the past.

I love, love this place. It's a fascinating place to explore as an adult and an even better place to take young children. It's a shame how very few people realize what a geological phenomenon the La Brea Tar Pits actually is. If you're interested in paleontology, I would check out their colleciton and talk to some of the scientists or graduate students working there. It will surely be an interesting conversation.

This is definitely one of the places you have to visit if your in Los Angeles. This was one of the places shown in one of the Hollywood movies Volcano. I think one visit to this place would be enough though. Its not that big thats why. They have this tar pit with an elephant and bones etc around.
