Not at all what you would expect from a birth center: impersonal care, poor communication, misleading (or just ignorant) explanations of billing, and inflexible in their policies for induction etc. At my 39 week appointment of a perfectly healthy pregnancy the midwife I happened to see that day (you never know who and it's never the same) was already discussing the possibility of induction after 40 weeks, the need for an ultrasound, NST, and threatened to not deliver my baby if I declined! At the prenatal appointments they just read from a list of questions, I had to repeat my history over and over since you see different midwives each time, and there is no consistency of care. This is all in addition to financial confusion and surprise bills like pp said. The only reason I gave it two stars is because my birth was so wonderful - even though an intern managed my labor and even stitched me up (though I requested that the actual midwife do it, I was given a rude look and ignored the request). If you have another option for a natural birth take it! If not, at least be prepared to handle your care and birth on your own, they just give you a place to do it.

I had all my prenatal care here. My midwife would not let me birth in the center when I went into labor because I was 2 weeks early AND my baby was small. I had to deliver at UNC, but my midwife came with me. I had a natural birth and used hypnobabies methods of relaxation to do it-I had an overall very pleasant birth that I'm sure would not have happened if I had gone the mainstream method of birthing. I highly recommend having a birth center birth over a hospital birth if you want to try and deliver naturally.

I saw the midwives at the WBWC when I was pregnant with my first child. They were wonderful. I had to have an emergency transfer to the hospital due to pre-e and hellp and the midwife stayed with me the whole time and was very reassuring. Given the circumstances, I had the best birth possible and most importantly have a healthy daughter.

WBWC is one of the only places (if not the only place) in NC where women can still have an out-of-hospital birth center experience attended by experienced and very well-qualified nurse-midwives. I had my son there and also worked there as a nurse; both experiences only affirmed the unique and high-quality birth experience this birth center has to offer.

Don't be tricked by other hospital-based "birth centers". In a time when that phrase is overused and abused, WBWC is the real thing.

Women's Birth & Wellness Center has a wonderful store full of hard to find items. Cloth diapers, Haba toys, baby carriers like Ergo, nursing bras & organic clothing are amongst the top sellers. The boutique also has breast pumps for sale & rent. The ladies who work in the boutique are very knowledgeable about the products and can help you find exactly what you need.

I gave birth to my daughter there in 2005. She was my first and I have always been so scared of doctors and hospitals that I decided to do some research to see if I could find a small doctors office at least. I heard about the WBWC from another doctor and called to get a tour of the place and absolutely loved it. Every midwife that worked there was so nice and understanding of the million questions I had. I go there for my annual and know when I decide to have another child they will be there for me. I cant say enough great things about them!

When I was pregnant with my son I was, at first, going to UNC hospital, there was SO much testing and I always saw a different Dr. and sometimes I just saw a student. I finally switched to Women's birth and Wellness Center when I was 6 months pregnant and I delivered there, It was a really nice experience, I was the only one there that day so all focus was on me, they took very good care of me after I had my son and were there for me after I had him when I went for my 6week check-up... Now that I am pregnant again I have been doing my full pre-natal care with them at it's been a way better experience the last time, and I'm betting the next birth will be just as good if not better! They have a wonderful store right next door now, with a lactation consultant available. They have a wonderful library of books and movies available, and they have a wonderful caring staff, and you get to know each midwife so that when you have your baby it is with someone you know, and someone who knows you.
I deffinitly would recommend this place.

The Women's Birth & Wellness Center does have a few good people. My own personal experience was not what I thought it would be. When I first began going there I was happy with the services. I was met by a great phlebotomist, you see I was deathly afraid of getting shots. When I walked in and it was shot time I wanted to pass out. Teresa, the phlebotomist was great. I didn't even feel it. She is so friendly and always has a smile. Teresa even made me feel alright with the weight I gained lol. If the services would of stayed this way I would have no complaints. The more appointment I had the more I began to feel uncertain about the care. I was given to a midwife who just began working there and have been given to her every since. She is always uncertain about things and this is very scary. She even suggested that I see another midwife which is the norm. I was schedule to see the director (head midwife) whom I never met and when my appointment day came who did I see the same midwife. She cancelled, I am really becoming discouraged. This midwife still can't answer my questions. At thirty eight weeks I should feel relaxed but I don't..

I had so many of my friend's rave about this place, I just had to check it out. I have 'Family Planning' Medicaid and can get one annual gynecological exam every year, so I figured I might as well see what all the fuss is about. It was the BEST experience I've ever had in going for my annual. You immediately feel at ease and comfortable in the all female environment. They are genuinely very caring and spend plenty of time with you. The exam is thorough. If you have any concerns about your health, they want you to ask and put you right at ease. I saw Amanda and she was great! I would always recommend them to anyone. I didn't go there for prenatal care, but several of my friends did. In general, I have had not so great childbirth experiences, so if I do have another one, this would be the place I'd go.

This is the kind of place that people dream about. All of the staff listen to what you have to say and genuinely care about the outcome of your situation. You are granted the freedom to participate in something special, rather than just standing by and letting it happen. From the front staff, to the nurses, to the midwives; they all award you with kind faces and attitudes. You are not treated as just another number with $$$$s next to it, but as a respected patient and a friend. You are the reason these women are at work everyday, and that is reflected in their work.I came to WBWC on the referral of a friend. I didn't realize that the triangle offered a facility like WBWC at the start of my pregnancy. I transferred at 19 weeks, immediately after I attended the tour of the facilities. I wanted a natural birth from the beginning, but felt very tense and anxious about how everything was going to be. The Birthing Center put my mind at ease knowing that my opinions and views would be respected; as well as knowing that I was now in a very supportive and nurturing environment. I would have loved to be at WBWC from the beginning, but I am thankful for what time I had there. This was my 1st pregnancy and it truly was a dream. Everything, including the labour process, was very enjoyable. My labour was a bit short, but it was extremely calming and reassuring to have the midwife stay on the phone with me for more than half the ride there. (The hour ride was completely worth it!!!!) She talked me through my contractions until we reached the Birthing Center, where she was waiting in the parking lot!! (Now, THAT is an amazing woman!)I believe that these women are very special, and if you want to have a natural childbirth, then THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!! I will continue to attend WBWC for my yearly check-ups and for the occasional visit to say hello. They also have a good library of books on pregnancy, labour, and lactation, as well as a new store that has a lot of interesting things! They also have classes available for lactation. I really cannot say enough good things about WBWC.Remember that pregnancy is a natural process, and that your body knows exactly what to do...you're job is to trust it.

I did not have my child here, but I did come to then when I was expericening nursing troubles. They were very understanding and did what they could to help me and my daughter. It worked! Before long things got better and they gave me a recommendation for a local lactation consultant I could call in the future.

We have had both of our children at WBWC. From my first visit I knew this was the best place for me to experience the rite of passage into motherhood. I never felt rushed, my questions were welcomed and answered with patience and understanding, and my husband was made an integral participant in all matters. During both labors I felt safe and supported and left with my children confident I had made the best choice for them and myself.

PROS: professional staff who are paitient and attentive
CONS:

I had my second child here, 17 months ago. My first child was born in a hospital - we lived in a different area and had no access to any free-standing facilities. I dearly wish I had been able to have my first at WBWC. It would have set the stage for a completely different transition into motherhood. My second birth experience was so fantastic, so completely different from the first. I had to drive a 1/2-hour one-way to Chapel Hill for every pre-natal appointment and for the delivery, but it was well worth it. This facility is staffed by midwives, and has home-like rooms, a variety of natural birth options (various birth chairs, in-room pools, etc), a lending library, a list of local doulas and lots of other resources. This is the place to go for a natural childbirth, or one with as little intervention as possible. If you want lots of sonagrams, drugs, a c-section or an episiotomy, don't start here.
