Besides the fact that it gives the false impression of being a non for profit/charitable organization, it is plain rediclulous to sell used items that I can very well find at Marshalls or tj maxx for about the same price. I made the mistake of buying a purse for $40 bucks that was very expensive because the purse turn out to be not leather, what a rip off. I will not buy anything there anless it is a true bargain. I myself preffer to work out, read, or do something else with my free time than waisted over there.

I shop at Unique thrift store often. I do avoid going on the holidays when it is 50% off though because the crowds are terrible. I have found most of the staff there polite and helpful although many will come to the racks when you are looking through clothing and push all the items to one side not caring if you are looking through them or not. You have to really check out what you buy because I have seen jackets from Steve and Barrys that sell for 12.95 for sale at Unique for 49.95, so you really need to know what things are worth. I don't consider selling a blouse for 30.00 a deal when I can get it on sale at a retail store and return it if I have a problem. I have found most of the clothing there to be clean and fresh smelling. I do recommend opening boxes that are taped shut to see that all the parts are there. I have gotten things home and had pieces missing. I won't pay 50.00 for a used quilt when I can get one new at Home store for 30.-40. Like I said, know your prices. Some things are worth buying and others aren't. You be the judge.

I agree with most of the other reviews that they are a bit pricey to be called A Thrift Store. I have donated items to this place, have gone in and seen them and feel they were priced way over what I would even imagine if I was to sell them myself in a Garage Sale for my profit. I agree they do hire a Majority of Hispanics and if it were not for the price on the tags and on the registers, these folks would not know what price the items go for and how to deal with an adverse question from a customer. They need to Lower the Prices and consider the people who donate as well as those who come in to make purchases. There is no way they should have items in there for $1995.00.

To the critics below me, what is wrong with Employees that only speak spanish? I don't speak a word of Spanish myself, and I've never had a problem at the Unique. In fact, I've found that they sell quality goods very affordably. I never leave the Unique without at least one purchase, and feel like I'm supporting a great, indepedent business while doing so. Staff there have never, ever treat me with disrespect, but much the opposite.

I've never felt "dirty" in any of the Unique locations, or that the place smelled of "moth balls" more than any other thrift store, such as Goodwill, the Salvation Army or Savers. In fact, in comparison, I would say that the Unique's offerings are much more appropriately priced than what you will find at Goodwill or Savers, where the prices have sky-rocketed.

The only negative thing I might say about the Unique is that on federal holidays (when the entire store is marked down 50%) there are huge crowds. This is probably just because so many other community members out there realize the high-quality and value of Unique Thrift, just as I do.

Unique is not a "thrift store" in the charity sense, though they accept donations and try to present the appearance of being a charitable enterprise. Much of their merchandise is purchased from charities including the DAV and foundations for lupus and ALS, along with others I have no doubt. However, Unique is a profit-making business. If you donate to them, you will benefit no one but the owner.

Items are sorted thoroughly before they go onto the sales floor. I strongly believe they sell online or through other outlets as quality antiques and big-ticket items rarely appear for sale. I have also witnessed cartloads of more expensive items being taken into the back room at closing time on the day before a sale. It is also fairly common for items placed on the floor on the day before a sale to be marked with higher prices than usual.

SOME items, especially electronics, appear to be given a onceover before being put out for sale, and there are abundant outlets available to at least plug things in. However, everything is sold AS IS with no returns (Goodwill, by way of comparison, has a seven day return policy on electronics). Unique is not above placing obviously broken items on the shelves and at times putting high prices on them. I have also encountered items in apparently sealed boxes which, on being opened, proved to be damaged or missing pieces. Others have told me that the store seals open boxes (at least to the extent of putting factory-appearing tape on box flaps) in the back room. Be sure to open ANYTHING before you buy it. Be careful about doing so, however, as opening boxes may get you a chewing-out from a manager or other employees.

Prices appear to be marked at random. I recently saw an Army blanket with a hole in it marked at $19.95 right next to a flawless handwoven Finnish wool blanket at $4.95. One often sees similar disparities with clothing, and good-quality shoes are often marked $40 or more! Examine all clothing and household goods VERY carefully before buying--Unique has no qualms about putting items with obvious holes, stains, or other damage on the shelves (want some urine-stained sheets at $9.95? They've got 'em). Clothing is also very obviously not cleaned before being put on the shelves--items which other stores would throw out or make into rags are often place on the racks at Unique. So give everything a good laundering (including yourself) after going there and if you buy something that requires dry cleaning, don't forget to add that cost to the price on the tag.

All that aside, with a good eye and appropriate caution, you will find a deal here and there, and these usually make a visit worthwhile. Be prepared for crowds, a fair number of outright rude employees, know the "new" price of anything you buy before you even consider buying from Unique, and especially after dark, think twice before going there alone. Remember before you spend a single dollar here that it is going to a business which engages in any number of questionable practices and if that bothers you, stay away.

I have bought many nice items from Unique but also got "stuck" more than a few times until I learned to look at items very carefully. While I continue to shop there, it is last on my list of thrift stores, well behind those which operate for genuinely charitable reasons, treat their customers (and employees) as human beings, and remember the words "customer service".

My experience with this store was POOR. There is a lingering smell of moth balls and must, but that is to be some what expected at a used clothing store. The employees are almost exclusivly spanish speaking so dont even bother asking unless you are fluent in spanish. I TRIED CALLING TO ASK A QUESTION AND NO ONE COULD SPEAK ENGLISH. There are many broken and overpriced items. I would recomend going to the Goodwill. They are non profit and employ disabled peoples.

I have been shopping at Unique for a few years. I've always found their staff to be helpful, their merchandise clean and good quality. I don't shop anywhere else because I can find what I need there. I enjoy the adventure of seeing what they have on any given day. I have been telling anyone who will listen that it is a great place to shop. While it's true their prices have gone up in the last year, if you go on Tuesday, you get the discount and, even without the discount, the prices are way better than retail.

I just found out management fired long-time employee, Nani. She was one of the only English-speaking hispanics working at the Columbia Heights' Unique Thrift Store. She was always very pleasant to the customers and very helpful in finding what was needed. After four years of dedicated employment, they fired her and at Christmas time -- how Christian?! Where will she find employment now in order to continue her education? If this kind of mangement continues with other employees, I will personally tell community to boycott this store!

LIKE PAYING 9 BUCKS FOR A tSHIRT? OR HOW ABOUT 15 BUCKS FOR A SWEATSHIRT JUST BECAUSE IT HAS A SPORTS LOGO ON IT? I AVOID ANY UNIQUE THRIFT STORES FOR THESE REASONS...I CAN USUALLY GET NEW CLOTHES CHEAPER!

Bad management. Asked about how the store operates and manager was very rude and asked why I wanted to know. I simply was trying to get information of
weather I wanted to donate items. For sure not now.

I have been going to this store for years and have noticed prices have been increasing-some outrageously. This merchandise is all donated to the store and prices should reflect that and be consistent.

There is no bathroom or fitting room at this store.

The Mangement of this store is deaf to the complaints of customers and would rather throw a customer of many years out of the store than listen. Bad!!!

My experience started with a cashier calling on her to approve the sale of an item that had it's price tag partially turn off (no fault of mine). She accused me of changing the price. The manager of the store was called, but was no help at all. Eventually I was told to leave the store and not come back again.

I called the owner of the store (who was reasonable) to express my displeasure. The incident was looked into and gues what, I was allowed back to the store and the foolish front supervisor has been fired due to other complaints.

This unique thrift ,The workers are very rude and is very poorly managed. They have great things coming out but black and gray haired manager are buying everything from back. Some of the clothing has been hanging there for five years or more. There is alot of items that should be thrown in the garbage.Too many broken items. Sometimes you can smell pee.

. DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE OTHER TWO UNIQUE STORES.

Have been going to unique thrift store for 7 years and they have a mexican employee named angel and he was very pushy and rude with the public and I told black manager and he sided with the employee and said why would he do that and laughed. So I told dave the owners sister and she told angel and said let us know if anything else happens. That she was very sorry. Told us to stay out of carts which everyone goes in carts so today I saw a doll and looked at it and put it down and he said you cant shop from cart. Told me to follow him and told me to leave the store.

Over the past 6th months that I've been going to this Thrift Store, I've been impressed at how everything is displayed. It's all very neat, the clothes are clean and they always have enough employees that I've not had to stand in line forever.
They are in a strip mall, and have parking right outside their door. Tuesdays is 25% off for Seniors and I have found bargains there.

PROS: Orderly, clean, good variety and well displayed
CONS:
