TCF Bank is particularly new customer unfriendly
by John M.
In their promotional material, TCF says "Tell your friends about the confidence you have in us." So, I will.
On Sept. 28 I opened an account at the TCF branch in my local Jewel. I wanted a separate account for my business travel expenses and the location was convenient. Opened the account with a $1500 expense check I'd received from my local employer (drawn on a local bank). On October 7 (9 days after opening account: 7 business days) I do an electronic funds transfer for $1200to pay my Amex bill -- and TCF bounces it and charges me $35!
I got nothing but blank stares at my local branch and nobody had a reasonable explanation other than "sometimes it takes longer for new account deposits to clear". Well, that's not my opinion of how you treat a new customer -- and it's probably a preview of more surprises to come -- so I closed my account.
As they suggested, I will gladly "tell me friends" that they should never do business with TCF Bank!

TCF Bank is some greedy, lying, bastards!!
by Pissed O.
this bank is full of crap. These bastards charged me for nonsufficient funds 3 times for 3 transactions that added up to $30. The terrible part is that I had $92 in my account when I made the 3 transactions so how in the hell I had nonsuffiecient funds when these bastards deducted the transactions from my balance!

My angry letter to TCF. They let my account get robbed!!!
by Alissa P.
To whom it may concern,
I have been a TCF customer for years. I have never been so dissatisfied with the lack of customer service. On Friday, April 10th, I was made aware that someone had hacked into my account. I would never have known if Visa fraud prevention services did not leave an automated message on my cell phone. I called Visa back and checked my TCF account online. My account had been drained and Visa said that a $1000.00 transaction needed my approval. That SHOULD have been a red flag for TCF. The attempted transaction amount was $1000.00 and yet IT STILL WENT THROUGH and drained my account. The second red flag for TCF was that the purchase was the EXACT amount of money I had in my account to the penny. That is not even possible. And the radio shack was located in Lithonia, Georgia. I live in Illinois. Also, the location listed by the transaction on my online account has mysteriously changed to COR0019. And it is no longer pending, it went through! I called TCF customer service on Friday! This transaction should never have gone through. Especially under such suspicious circumstances.
Furthermore, when I called TCF customer service on Friday, I had a very negative experience. The first representative I got a hold of hung up on me, and the second one spoke to me in a condescending manner, as if I was lying! Then he told me that TCF would try to get the money back in my account more than 10 days after receiving this letter. Later I talked to someone I know who works at TCF and he informed me that I will probably be waiting 3 months for the money to be returned to me if I even get it at all. This has to be a joke.
I am a college student. I have no money. Now I cant pay my tuition loan monthly payment because TCF is blind and incompetent. Thanks.
I would appreciate it if someone with training could call me and inform me how TCF is going to fix this in a timely manner.

Manipulates Posting of Transactions to Charge Numerous NSF Fees
by Lupe M.
I've been a customer of TCF Bank for a couple of years now and have had a lot of overdraft fee issues. I thought they must have been my fault for miscalculating and not knowing how transactions post, but yesterday I found out that TCF Bank has been ripping me off the whole time.On Feb. 12 my account balance was $205.14. I made four purchases totaling $45.23 bringing my account balance to $159.91. The same night I checked my account balance online and noticed an ACH transaction pending for $200 after the purchases that I made earlier that day. So I recorded the ACH transaction in my register and brought down my balance to -$40.09. I subtracted a $35 NSF fee amount because that's what the bank charges for overdrafting the account. My final account balance was -$75.09. Yesterday, Feb. 15, 2009 I went to a TCF Bank and deposited $160.00 to my account to make it current and have a balance of $84.91. However, when I got the deposit receipt I noticed that it stated a -$20.09 balance. I was confused about what was going on. As soon as I got home I checked my account online and noticed that I had been charged $140.00 of NSF fees for the transactions that I had made on Feb. 12,2009 before the actual transaction of $200 that had made my account negative.I called TCF Bank and spoke to a man named Sebastian who told me that the reason why I had been charged the NSF fees for the other transactions even though I did have money in the account at the time was because TCF Bank posts the transactions from greatest to smallest, even though they weren't made in that order. He said the reason why the bank did this was because they want to pay off the more "SIGNIFICANT" amounts first like car payments, mortgage payments, etc., so it would be less inconvenient for the customer. But to me, this method IS inconvenient and they are not being fair or ethical. They charge the customer various NSF fees by manipulating the order the transactions post. I know Bank of America got in trouble for the same thing and TCF bank should suffer the same consequences as BOA.

TCF Bank is for the birds!!
by bill j.
I am totally done with TCF!! I recently made a purchase on line for my wife using my TCF debit card. The transaction went thru, however it never appeared on my bank statement. I called my branch in Chicago and was told that this transaction never took place. The branch manager called me back to let me know that there was a formatting error that occured when the transaction was made, thus no money was taken out at the time of the purchase.
Long story short, when the money was finaly taken out, it overdrew my account. They still charged me a overdraft fee eventhough it was their fault. Needless to say, I closed my account.

TCF BANK ANOTHER HORROR STORY
by pat r.
I deposited a $10,000 student loan check into my TCF saving s account. The teller placed a 10 day hold on the funds. 10 days passed and TCF still had a hold on the funds. I visited the local Homewood, Illinois branch on Halsted street 4 times and complained to a manager in hopes of getting the funds released. Days later I followed up with a telephone call. I discussed the issue with the Homewood branch manager again. The ignorant manager became very beligerant and rude. Cursed me out and hung up the phone on me. I contacted TCF Corp and explained about the long and unusual hold on my funds and that the Homewood branch manager had cursed me and hung up the phone. TCF Corp did finally release the funds after a 14 day hold on the account. The ignorant branch manager was terminated (found out she had multiple complaints). In conclusion - avoid TCF bank at all cost. Although action was taken by corp to correct my situation but this branch manager should not have been hired in the first place - and the long hold should not have been placed on my student loan. In summary TCF's customer service is very lousy. Their local bank managers are rude and appear to lack basic customer service and banking skills.

****SITUATION RESOLVED****
by Kenneth C.
UPDATE: My situation was resolved at long last. I want to thank the Upper Management Staff at the bank for understanding my problem and not holding me responsible. At this point I am going to keep my account open and monitor everything very closely. I also have phone numbers for upper management level employees who have authorized me to call them first if I have any problems in the future. Now that's more like it!
Here's Corruption: I closed an account with TCF Bank back in December of 07 by means of a restitution payment. The account had already been closed. I came in as I said I would and paid off the remaining negative balance. 6 days after I did this (I have the receipt still), electronic transactions were allowed to go thru on that account (Netflix, Gym Membership) and AUTOMATICALLY reopen the account without my written signature anywhere. I have verified everywhere that this is done by a COMPUTER. I REPEAT: A COMPUTER! I also should note that I never once received a phone call from a REAL person to notify me that this was happening.
10 months after the charges were allowed to go thru WITHOUT my authorization, I had to again close my account, this time because of Fraud charges incurred from "free"creditreport.com. The bank immediately closed my account to, and I quote, "prevent electronic transactions" from incurring.
I am at this time being told that I am responsible for these charges. 10 months after they occurred without one phone call that didn't show up on caller ID as "Unknown Call". C'mon TCF, get with it! Call from a REAL phone! Have a REAL person call me. Now my credit has been damaged by this negligence.
So, I must question this: How come when I complained about Fraud charges, I was told that we must close the account and that I am the only one who can remove money from that account (my direct deposit was tied to the account and rent was coming up), but when I closed my account in December of 07, electronic transfers were allowed to go through!
Furthermore, why are electronic transactions allowed to AUTOMATICALLY open up one's account? How is that legal? That is the biggest issue here. As it stands today, I was PROMISED a call from the Regional Manager (the only one who can help me at this point), and have yet to receive it here at almost 10:00 p.m.
The bottom line: This business has an UNSATISFACTORY rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and ARE NOT an ACCREDITED BBB business. Don't let them do it to you. Close your accounts today, and make sure they are CLOSED.

Run Far Far AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by jamie j.
on Monday I will be closing my accounts! I have been banking with TCF for about 10 years. I Have always had small problems with them. For a couple years now I feel like they have been stealing money out of my account. I will have a completely different balance in my checkbook then they have on my online banking. Maybe I could have made a error in my math once or twice but it keeps happening and the number is getting larger. There are no records of withdraws I haven't made the money just seems to be missing. Now what has started happening is I use my visa check card to make a purchase and then a month later it will clear... a month??? are you kidding me?!!! I have no idea if I am being charged twice or what TCF is up to. Then about a week go I wrote a check to my boyfriend who also banks at TCF. When he went to deposit it into HIS account they Deposited it in my account... how this is even possible I have NO IDEA! when I called to ask about it the teller told me to give it a couple days to see if it all works out. Now yesterday I deposited two paychecks. When I looked last night they were posted on my online banking but today they are magically gone. When I called about this they told me the teller made an error and the checks should be posted on Monday. I am done. I was banking here out of convince only. This place is horrible and should be shut down. If you cant hire employees who can do simple math then you don't deserve to be a business.

Criminals
by Connie R.
Many employees have gang tattoos and the managers seem to encourage a thug mentality. I closed my account after a meeting with my "personal banker" who reeked so badly of marijuana that I left the bank light headed.

By Far the Worst
by Morgan C.
I have never been so personally disappointed, disgusted or offended by any other institution in my existence. The fees are by far the worse and unfair business practices combined with condescending managers make this the worst possible choice for ANY self-respecting consumer. I have never heard one good word from ANY person regarding this barely legal company. They should be shut down immediately just for the offensive language they deem 'acceptable' for their employees to use. This is a true horror story of a rapist pretending to be a bank.

TCF - Not worth putting your money with them...
by John C.
I decided to close my account with TCF today after realizing that they charged me over $800 on transactions worth less than $100 and constantly kept my account in an overdrawn situation. I first banked with them as a student at Michigan and they were the most accessible and open bank to students and my 2 year experience was pretty good. After I got a job in a state where they didn't have a presence, I still kept them as my primary a/c because I had good memories from them. However, that soon changed... my first run-in was when I lost my card and the help-desk lady insisted on using my Michigan address which was invalid and I eventually got the debit card 3 months after reporting it. I still kept the a/c though for sentimental reasons... The final straw though was this month when I had discovered that they had charged me over $600 on about 15 transactions that totalled less than $100. Granted, I was probably not the most diligent at checking my account as I had never ever run a debit balance on my account but what irked me was the customer rep. lady was rude, condescending and constantly cut me off when I was asking her whether it made sense to charge as they did. Also, the principle itself is just wrong - my regular automatic deposits into the account would have allowed for the account to correct itself but the charges kept offsetting it. Finally, Chase bank sends automatic alerts if your over the limit and you can react on time - TCF bank is least concerned... This is the first issue I've that I've felt so strongly about that I've taken the trouble to write it out but I'm done with them... Completely!

Don't even step foot in here!

The Worst Bank on the face of the Earth is TCF Bank. The employees are inept and make bad customer service a priority. If you have the opportunity to bank at ANY other bank, do it. I'd recommend stuffing your money in between your mattress sooner than I'd steer you to this nightmare of a bank. Note that it is damn near impossible to find a branch location phone number--it is no where in site on-line and the 800 number minions are trained not to give out branch phone numbers. The employees are the most incompetent, apathetic group of people I've ever encountered so be prepared to pitch a fit to get the kind of service that you, in reality, deserve.

TCF Bank Rapped me till I bled $$$$$$$ Bank there and you will Pay$$$
by TCF S.
TCF robs the customer blind. They post charges to your account not in the order they are made but from highest to lowest to maximise the amount of bounced check fees. I used my ATM card on Friday to take out 60 dollars thinking I had enough money to cover it. I was 36 dollars short, my mistake so charge me the $33 I deserve it. Instead TCF charged me 165 because they know they can charge me more by changing the order. I screwed up one time but they made it 5 times. Every time, but the last when I used my ATM card, there was money to cover it except for the last one. Change the order and now I have 5, 33 dollar charges because they take up to 3 days to post instead of instantly like decent banks. 10 years as a customer thats how they treat me. Stay away from TCF.

I had two personal accounts set up and wanted to set up a special account for my son where people could send in donations directly to this account (There was a fundraiser coming up in the near future) I spoke with more than 7 employees, all of them passing me off to other branches and different officers. I finally ended up back where I started where they said they had no idea how they could do this. I felt like I was dealing with the most incompetent people who were unwilling to do any type of research to help me. I have since closed my 2 personal accounts with them.
